burglins··on Coffee, sandwiches, underwear, beer: a day in the life of Japan's konbini
Are they cheap, though? I often avoid going to shops the like of GS25, Żabka or 7/11, because the prices are often 125%-150% the normal supermarket price.
burglins··on Doom on a modified rotary phone
The part about bluetooth is all too relatable. I'm wondering if there is some other way to do wireless communication that is much less annoying to set up?
burglins··on A ghost town of abandoned mansions in China
Or maybe it's because if you're well-off, there's no reason to buy an expensive villa that looks just like the one next to it. Better to buy a smaller, more tasteful house that's uniquely yours?

IMO neighborhoods with a single house design copy-pasted are really unappealing, no matter the country.

burglins··on Don't be clever
Oh no, the conclusion is so funny. That's the problem with "magic frameworks" like ASP.NET, where it's not obvious how to extend things if need be (if even possible).

One thing stands out: shutterstock
burglins··on Another World ported to FPGA
Oh, I know about the emulation layers of early computers! But I'd assume those programs rarely required frame-perfect input unlike video-games. Wouldn't that be too wasteful and needlessly limit the playerbase?

Edit: after reading through wikipedia, I think maybe a VM wouldn't be that wasteful, since the game is very simple mechanically.

burglins··on Another World ported to FPGA
I wonder how common were full game VMs in the 90s. For a game older than myself, wouldn't a VM layer incur a great performance penalty on PCs from that time?
burglins··on The Uxn Ecosystem
uxn is one of those things I know of and read about for quite a long time, but never end up trying myself. Those "limited on purpose" community-supported systems are a really cool concept.
burglins··on Debunking Cloudflare’s recent performance tests (2021)
It's kinda weird seeing a blunt response (criticism of their competitor) from a company, but I like it. Feels more genuine, I guess.
burglins··on Is Design Dead? (2004)
I'd like to imagine that anyone who uses UML today is doing it ironically as a sort of post-modern art piece.
burglins··on Architecture 4031: Introductory Coreboot
Sorry, I just noticed this comment. I know you probably won't see this, but that's not what I meant!

What I wanted to write and the reason why I noticed the accent was not because it was bad, but because I'm also Polish, so I am especially sensitive to Polish accents (and I hate hearing myself speak foreign languages, so there's that)! The same way, for example, Swedish speakers hate hearing their own countrymen speak Swedish! I didn't mean for it to be taken so seriously!

Also, IMO, videos which are voiced by their creators sound better, more genuine. I'd honestly prefer it if you were to practice your pronounciacion just a bit more and the videos would be perfect!

burglins··on Architecture 4031: Introductory Coreboot
Really cool topics, but wish there was a text version of those courses.

Edit: aside from the fact, that reading is much more effective for learning, hearing their Polish accent is pure agony (I'm Polish)

But then they had to add transparency at some point, no?
burglins··on New TLDs: Not Bad
It's kinda weird, I've never seen companies use them. I wonder why?
burglins··on TikTok Owner Had 'Backdoor' for CCP Access to US Data, Lawsuit Alleges
The "mob" is uneducated, stupid and prone to manipulation. The "mob" attacked Poland from the east in the XX century.

We have to start treating the mob as individuals. Putting down the phone is tantamount to having a grasp on reality.

burglins··on New TLDs: Not Bad
> There are now 40 such TLDs: android, app, bank, chrome, dev, foo, gle, gmail, google, hangout, insurance, meet, page, play, search, youtube, esq, fly, eat, nexus, ing, meme, phd, prof, boo, dad, day, channel, hotmail, mov, zip, windows, skype, azure, office, bing, xbox, microsoft

Interesting how Google and M$ added their own TLDs (and a fairly large amount of them).

(Edit: .meme and .dad are also google, so it's all forgiven)

burglins··on Helping a kid who made a math mistake
>a strongly typed functional language would solve most of my problems

I'm at the stage where I constantly notice this, which adds to my already non-zero job fatigue. I try to keep my sanity by threatening (myself) to start my own company, but maybe I just need to stop caring and grow up...

burglins··on African Workers for ChatGPT, TikTok and Facebook Vote to Unionize
> Pretty sure GPT-4 already exceeds human labellers on average for simple moderation tasks (ie facebook comments, not say reddit communities with fine nuance).

AFAIK reddit mods and "fine nuance" are oxymorons

burglins··on GPT makes learning fun again
I'm curious - how do you pass the article to GPT? Are you doing any formatting?
burglins··on Teardown Frame Teardown: Rendering Analysis
I wonder if the increasing "lifelessness" of videogames is not only caused by the same open-world ubisoft-style formula and microtransactions, but by increasing graphical fidelity while having extremely static environments in these games.

The game world should feel like an actual world and not a diorama with extra steps.

burglins··on The web’s most important decision
For me as a kid, there was a huge gap between something that was free and something that was not. The difference between asking my parents for something and just getting (downloading) it.

I now have my own disposable income, but I still think long and hard in case I have to spend money; the actual price being secondary to the fact, that the thing is not free.

burglins··on Necrobrands – Digital End-Stage Capitalism
Kinda offtopic: I really like the main idea of this article, but the contents are really generic and feel like they were generated from the heading alone.

Generic call to AI regulation and vague statements like "undermine efforts to promote responsible consumption" - like what does that even mean?

Like the whole article is basically filler... I dunno...
