buredoranna··on How to set up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for your sending domain
This looks like a pretty good resource.

I'd like to add the following, which I continually reference and has led to repeatable success:

https://www.linuxbabe.com/mail-server/setting-up-dkim-and-sp...

And as far as confirming it works, I continually rely on sending to a gmail address.

Under the three dots is "view original" which gives you

SPF, DKIM, and DMARC results.

buredoranna··on Burning Man death rates – A short lesson in statistics
Brent Chapman, author of "Incident Management for DevOps and SRE", just got back from his annual "not exactly a vacation" trip to Burning Man, where he's worked as a "Dispatch Supervisor" since 2012.[1]

I as able to hear him at BayLISA giving his talk on incident command and what we can learn from the fire department[2][3], an excellent talk.

I contend people will be willing, even eager, to pay a premium for content provably produced by humans.

Are you an artist? A woodworker? Metalsmith? ... start recording your work and post it to youtube. I guarantee people will be willing to pay extra for the thing you built (I certainly would).

> we still need good judgement and communcation in deciding where to go

I want to emphatically endorse this statement.

This is where the human workload will shift to: making good decisions... understanding why one path is preferred over another. And collaborating and communicating in constructive ways. More to the point, humans excel at being able to recognize when a chosen path is no longer fruitful, or where a conversation devolves into the unproductive.

We are constantly making decisions based on tradeoffs. We choose one approach over another, not so much because our chosen path is obviously superior, but because the peril on our chosen path is preferential to the peril on a different path.

I have used ai to great utility in my design process, to help me understand the tradeoffs within any given endeavor, greatly helping in choosing which path to take.

Thus far, I haven't seen an AI which can unilaterally be relied up on to always effect "good judgement" for the work it is tasked with completing.

But once good judgement, and the correct path, is codified in markdown files, ai can be exceedingly efficient in carrying it out.

buredoranna··on A Practical Guide to SSH Tunnels: Local and Remote Port Forwarding
I'll mention it here, because I learned about it here.

"~C" will drop you into the SSH command line, allowing you to, among other things, effect port forwarding

  -L8080:localhost:443
Learning that "~C" exists, and what you can do with it, has supercharged my use of SSH tunnels, which were already awesome on their own.

But for some reason this has been disabled by default in more recent ssh configurations... to ensure its available

  -o EnableEscapeCommandline=yes
or, in your ~/.ssh/config

  EnableEscapeCommandline yes

buredoranna··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
Fair point... but I feel awash in doom, gloom and other apocalyptic predictions.

I found this book to be a welcome breath of fresh air, and I enjoyed listening to it.

It revealed to me that maybe, just maybe (we can only hope) things aren't quite as bad as we've been lead to believe... and while ai is obviously not mentioned, it does help cast modern tech developments in a more favorable light.

One specific upside from ai?

I no longer have to write systemd unit files.

That alone may be worth the cost.

Can anyone comment on the ramifications this?
buredoranna··on I cancelled Claude: Token issues, declining quality, and poor support
> the whole thing being built on copyright infringement

I am not a lawyer, but am generally familiar with two "is it fair use" tests.

1. Is it transformative?

I take a picture, I own the copyright. You can't sell it. But if you take a copy, and literally chop it to pieces, reforming it into a collage, you can sell that.

2. Does the alleged infringing work devalue the original?

If I have a conversation with ai about "The Lord of the Rings". Even if it reproduces good chunks of the original, it does not devalue the original... in fact, I would argue, it enhances it.

Have I failed to take into account additional arguments and/or scenarios? Probably.

But, in my opinion, AI passes these tests. AI output is transformative, and in general, does not devalue the original.
