It "works" in the sense that if nothing goes wrong you get the expected result. But you can omit the fsyncs and it still "works" to this standard.

The article gives a concrete example of a failure mode: fsync can silently fail. If this happens then "open+write+fsync+close+dir+fsync" does not work.

It shouldn't matter. But the system was designed to track trajectories of recognised objects. So every time it changed its mind about what it was looking at it started recalculating the trajectory. By the time it settled down it was too late to avoid the fatal accident.

Don't assume that self-driving software is designed with even a minimal level of competence.

A middle man is responsible to the consumer. A subcontractor is not. Grubhub does not tell the consumer whether they are acting as a subcontractor or middle man for a particular restaurant. This is deceptive and harms the restaurants who do not subcontract Grubhub.

Might-have-beens have no relevance to the ethics of the choices we make now. We are in the middle of a vast medico-economic experiment. It is bizarre to consider the ethics of only the medical side of the experiment, not the experiment as a whole.
