btgeekboy··on Moving OkCupid from REST to GraphQL
If the custom server they were referring to was OKWS (https://github.com/OkCupid/okws), I wouldn’t be surprised if it was basically a rewrite.
btgeekboy··on I'm a dating app profile ghostwriter who pretends to be clients online
Sounds interesting, but it’s paywalled for me.
btgeekboy··on Apple Silicon M1 chip in MacBook Air outperforms high-end 16-inch MacBook Pro
Not to mention I believe the RAM is included on the M1 SOC.
btgeekboy··on Notes on My Colon Cancer
Why not just go and get that piece of mind? You clearly have elevated risk.
btgeekboy··on IKEA to buy back used furniture in recycling push
My Galant desk is probably over 10 years old at this point. Still just fine; only thinking of replacing it because I want a standing desk now that I am WFH for the foreseeable future. Sure, the top is that cheap paper stuff, but it’s been broken down and assembled 7 times due to moving and survived just fine.
btgeekboy··on Atlassian moving to cloud-only, will stop selling server licenses
Wiki.js seems to be up and coming in this space. It’s not full featured yet, but it feels like working with a modern web application, rather than a bunch of PHP. No real time collaboration though.
btgeekboy··on HashiCorp Boundary
I like the people behind Tailscale, but I’ve yet to figure out how they’re different than ZeroTier.
btgeekboy··on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
Seems like those who need it will just pick up some of these: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B079LYHNSR/
btgeekboy··on Police killings more likely in agencies that get military gear, data shows
In other words, you want more WA State Patrol (white cars, light blue uniforms) than Seattle PD (navy blue for both), it seems. Though I recall the move to the navy blue uniforms in Seattle was for cost reasons - their old baby blue uniforms were custom, so they cost more.
btgeekboy··on Raspberry Pi 4 can finally boot directly from USB
The 4 is a bit different under the hood (as evidenced by the different procedures). There was support on the older models, while the 4 launched without it.
btgeekboy··on Ask HN: What did you do to improve your company?
When I started at a previous company, we scored almost 0 on the Joel Test. (Remember that?) By the time I left, we were at close to 100%.
btgeekboy··on Study suggests that fresh asphalt is a significant source of air pollution
Here in Seattle, when they took down the viaduct along the waterfront, they also decommissioned a tunnel that the viaduct connected to. The decommissioning consisted of leaving the tunnel intact and filling it with ground up concrete from the viaduct.
btgeekboy··on Home Office Projects Series: Air conditioner setup
I used to live in a building that had an electric furnace in each unit. The air conditioning coils were connected to a condenser shared with the building; the size of the piping led me to believe it might be pushing chilled water (vs. refrigerant) to each unit. No crappy boxes hanging outside, individual per-unit control inside.
btgeekboy··on FedEx feeder plane takes flight without pilot in test for Reliable Robotics
You'd be surprised. Typically, you'll find that jetliners are older and therefore have an older tech stack, but also that they're redundant. Multiple pitot tubes, for example. On newer GA planes, there may be less redundant sensors, but the technology running them can be more modern and more powerful. The tools on the jet get the job done with two pilots and are there to make money, while the GA airplane is going to be piloted single pilot, and more likely for pleasure.
btgeekboy··on FedEx feeder plane takes flight without pilot in test for Reliable Robotics
There is at least one autonomous system on the market today that can do just that - find the nearest airport and land.

btgeekboy··on Is macOS Becoming Unmaintainable?
A few times in a month seems a tad excessive. What's causing your installs to become corrupted?
btgeekboy··on Netflix is now doing per-shot encoding for UHD content
The HBO intro’s white noise background is pretty bad too. Quite blocky and degraded.
btgeekboy··on Microsoft Flight Simulator maps entire globe with AI
I’ve been running the task manager on a separate monitor to see where the bottlenecks are. Those long load times appear to be, for me, GPU bound. It’s probably pre-rendering something. I'm running a 3700X, 32GB RAM, M2 SSD, GTX 1070, gigabit internet.
btgeekboy··on WireGuard support in Mikrotik RouterOS v7.1beta2
A cursory Google search says yes. Not as a public repo or anything, but if you ask them, you'll get it. Examples here: https://forum.openwrt.org/t/mikrotik-gpl-source/6750/10
btgeekboy··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
Funny, I've not even used my work backpack in months now. Last I remember I put my badge in one of the pockets. I assume it's still there...
btgeekboy··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
I still wear a collared shirt and do my hair even though we're WFH. In addition to the above, it looks more professional when I'm on camera for work, which is also the only visual impression my team and managers have of me.
btgeekboy··on MicroPython
I once built a METAR light map like this - https://slingtsi.rueker.com/making-a-led-powered-metar-map-f...

However, I did it with an ESP8266 running MicroPython; I was impressed that such a small, cheap little computer was able to connect to the internet, retrieve XML, parse it (this step in particular), and update the state of each of the WS8211 lights with ease, all with some quick, easy-to-write Python.

btgeekboy··on Save the USPS

btgeekboy··on Save the USPS
Or how much transit funding comes from ticket sales vs. government budgets.
btgeekboy··on U.S. Marshals Service online auction – Fyre festival fraud scheme
I only saw the Hulu one, and I didn't remember it being very kind to fuckjerry. According to Wikipedia, Jerry Productions (aka fuckjerry) was the Netflix one. Kinda glad I didn't see it now.

btgeekboy··on U.S. Marshals Service online auction – Fyre festival fraud scheme
It's been a while, but I thought the Hulu documentary included a decent amount about fuckjerry. Might be worth comparing.
btgeekboy··on Facebook removes QAnon conspiracy group with 200k members
For many, yes. That’s the problem.
btgeekboy··on Ask HN: Do you have a daily cash stream?
COVID has also brought huge percentages of people out of work, and a coming eviction crisis. I considered getting into the landlord game last year, and I’m quite thankful now that I sidestepped that nonsense.
btgeekboy··on Garmin Outage Persists After 24 Hours Downtime
FlyGarmin is already back up. And it’s not a huge deal in my opinion. In addition to being only smaller operators, dbs don’t expire and roll over on the same day. New releases are available early.

Absolute worst case, if you were flying IFR and it was worth the expense, you could go to Jeppesen and buy a 1-off update for your avionics. Garmin Pilot could be replaced by a ForeFlight trial, etc. It’s not like Garmin goes down, planes are grounded.

btgeekboy··on Who still needs the office? U.S. companies start cutting space
Sure says a lot about open workspaces.
