bsurmanski··on Ask HN: Do you think software can be art?
I would say yes, software can be art. Just from a general point of view, video games are a subset of 'software', and I would consider them art.

But if you decide to ignore games, as you mentioned things like google maps can evoke awe and beauty. I would call that art.

as for examples, I find compilers to be beautiful. I love the way a well designed grammar comes together and the way that we can read a conforming program and turn it into a new program.

bsurmanski··on An extremely high-altitude plume seen at Mars’ morning terminator
unfortunately the actual article is paywalled.

In the abstract they say there are 2 theories of the plume's source:

1) CO2 or H2O ice particulate reflecting solar radiation. They don't state where the particulate is coming from, but they claim the plume is likely cyclic in nature.

2) strong auroral emissions 1000x the brightness of earth's aurora. Caused by a strong magnetic anomaly.

bsurmanski··on Show HN: Vivaldi programming language
Looks like a fairly well put together language.

A few things that were not explained in the README:

Why did you decide to create your own programming language?

> every type in Vivaldi inherits from Object (which in turn inherits from... itself)

What was the reason behind making Object inherit from itself?

What is the largest program currently written in Vivaldi?

edit: It looks like the first commit on github is 22 days ago, did you make the whole language in 22 days?

bsurmanski··on The Wake Programming Language
the Wake language was on here a few days ago, in the form of an article titled: The Rewards of Creating a Programming Language.

bsurmanski··on Apple Gears Up to Challenge Tesla in Electric Cars
If anything comes out of this, maybe electric cars will be seen as cool now that Apple is in on the market. Although I am not a fan of Apple itself and likely wont get an iCar, I hope this isn't a rumor.
bsurmanski··on The Rewards of Creating a Programming Language
I've been working on a programming language in my spare time, also. I call it OWL. Its not quite ready, but here's a link anyways: https://github.com/bsurmanski/wlc

OWL aims to be a low level object-oriented language without a garbage collector (albeit with reference counting).

The best 'example' program using OWL right now is a game I made for the 48 hour game jam, Global Game Jam 2015: https://github.com/bsurmanski/ggj2015

I agree with the poster that making a programming language from scratch is a great way to explore programming. On top of that, its a great experience seeing able to implement all of those features you wish were in your favorite language (or find out why they aren't).
