bsnnkv··on Microsoft Rolling Out New Windows Subsystem for Linux "WSL" Features for 2024
Original link here: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/commandline/whats-new-in-the-...

Very excited about these new changes and improvements, particularly the RAM releasing and automatic storage reclamation.

WSL2 replaced my Macbook many years ago, and these days I couldn't be happier using Windows + komorebi as a DE over NixOS running on WSL2.

bsnnkv··on Ask HN: What hair on fire problem are you willing to pay for right now?
https://notado.app has had support for Tweets and multiple other types of UGC (like comments! from everywhere!) for a long time now. I am the main developer and you can look at my comment history here for more details on the philosophy behind the project.

You can also check out some of my feeds of saved content[1] to get an idea of the breadth of support for UGC.

There are some articles available too if you don't mind longer reads.[2][3]

bsnnkv··on Microsoft should accept and give up Windows 11, throw everything at Windows 12
Windows 11 and WSL2 is pretty much the best development environment experience around right now in my books.

Being in the Windows ecosystem lets me benefit from that crazy backwards compat and support for mainstream software, windows-rs lets me customize a batteries-included DE[1] without having to touch JS, and on the WSL2 side of things I can run NixOS for all of my regular development needs.

It's very sad and frustrating to see Microsoft, despite all of this, trying to make the operating system as un-useable as possible in all the ways mentioned in this article and in other comments.

bsnnkv··on Liu Cixin's War of the Worlds (2019)
> I just feel that it is very tragic if a person cannot choose his own nationality and destiny. The really miserable people, such as North Koreans and many Chinese, if you are willing to help them, you should say no to the visa system and let the national borders cease to exist.

I think you would enjoy reading the Terra Ignota series[1].

bsnnkv··on Jeff Geerling: Corporate Open Source Is Dead
Replying to both parent comments here:

I do a fair bit of promotion on YouTube[1] which has resulted in a vibrant community around the software, and I am now creating an official, free GUI[2].

In this specific case even if there had been a trademark in place, the person in question had not used the name of the project at all, but had decided to aggressively market it in community spaces.

Ultimately after much reflection and experiencing first hand how easy it is for people to abuse (in my opinion) the option of deliberately hard-forking and introducing breaking changes to funnel people towards a paid piece of software (in this case, a GUI) that will _only_ work with their hard-fork, I concluded that preventing this kind of ecosystem fragmentation is more important to me than an "OSI-approved" badge.

bsnnkv··on Jeff Geerling: Corporate Open Source Is Dead
I recently re-licensed a large open source project from MIT to a source-available license which restricts redistribution after someone decided to fork it, completely rearrange the code and introduce subtle breaking interface changes, and then package it up with basic Electron UI for sale on a platform digital store.

I don't know what the answer is, but the OSI definition is clearly not built to withstand this era of late stage capitalism and the "hustle culture" that permeates through it.

bsnnkv··on Krazam OS
This really is the peak of user interface design. I will never be convinced otherwise.
bsnnkv··on Show HN: Free Plain-Text Bookmarking
Naturally, the release I push before making a comment here is the one that takes down the website. Back up now :)
bsnnkv··on Show HN: Free Plain-Text Bookmarking
Your initial want is pretty close to I ended up creating for myself for all things text-based with https://notado.app. I ended up ditching my old stuff in Instapaper, Readwise and Pinboard back in 2020ish because it didn't really fit the data model[1] (content-first rather than link-first) and since then I'm very happy with how everything is archived[2], organized and shareable[3] in Notado.

I still think it's possible to go incredibly far with a good data model, fuzzy search, automated tagging and feed publishing.

bsnnkv··on My MacBook Setup (the 2024 version)
This is also my favorite way of setting up MacBooks. I love being able to set up all my Linux, macOS and Windows[1] machines from a single flake.

bsnnkv··on Fighting Infomania: Why 80% of Your Reading Is a Waste of Time (2016)
Reminds me of my own approach of RINORIN (read it now or read it never) which I've written about on HN before and led me to cancel all my RIL app subscriptions and create https://notado.app for my own personal needs instead.
bsnnkv··on 'It hasn't delivered': the failure of self-checkout technology
> There's just no sense of "social contract" when interacting with a self-checkout. It's much easier to rationalize theft as merely striking back at a large, faceless corporation when you're interacting with a machine.

I wonder how much this rationalization is influenced by the growing public belief that corporations themselves have broken the social contract / have not bound themselves by any kind of social contract for a long time now

bsnnkv··on 'It hasn't delivered': the failure of self-checkout technology
Uniqlo has by far the best self checkout implementation I've used. My first experience with it, I was so suspicious that it was going to mess something up because I'm used to poor self checkout experiences, but now I'm over that and wish self checkout was implemented this well everywhere else.
bsnnkv··on NixOS: Declarative Builds and Deployments
I have step-by-step video guides (with accompanying git repos) for booting NixOS from zero on both Hetzner VPS instances[1] and bare metal Robot instances[2] with nixos-anywhere[3]. I used to use nixos-infect but now I'm 100% sold on nixos-anywhere.

bsnnkv··on NixOS: Declarative Builds and Deployments
Nice, I didn't know this! I'll add that I know Nix is also used widely at Discord.
bsnnkv··on NixOS: Declarative Builds and Deployments
NixOS is honestly the single most game-changing thing I've been introduced to in my last decade of experience in tech.

If you're interested in trying out NixOS I highly recommend either running it as an WSL2 VM[1] if you have a Windows machine or deploying it on a cheap VPS[2] to play around with.

I personally still use a Win11 desktop for compat with Adobe software and a few other bits and pieces, but I do all my serious work on a NixOS WSL2 VM.

bsnnkv··on QMK and Keyboards
I have a bunch of home row mods, and I also have layers with dedicated app-specific utility-mappings that I have automatically toggle on when the relevant app window is focused so that I don't have to waste extra keys to toggle/switch between different layers.
bsnnkv··on QMK and Keyboards
This looks excellent! I have gone down a bit of a rabbit hole and I'm considering once of the Alice ISO keyboards[1], perhaps even waiting until the low-profile Alice variants are available in ISO layouts[2].

[2]: https://keychron.de/products/keychron-k15-pro-alice-layout-q...

bsnnkv··on QMK and Keyboards
I have both an Ergodox and a Ferris which are both now gathering dust. In my experience, columnar layouts are not worth it for me as a developer, because there is nothing that I can gain from a layout that changes the position of the {};'<>() keys that will ever offset the productivity and familiarity lost by those keys never being where I expect them to be.
bsnnkv··on QMK and Keyboards
Gotta give a shoutout to kanata[1] which I have used daily for years at this point after giving up on QMK-powered keyboards.

QMK itself is great, but I was never able to find a non-columnar split ISO keyboard to use it with. Eventually I reluctantly settled on the Logitech K860[2] and I'm now happily using my favourite features from QMK with kanata at the software level.

[2]: If I'm behind the times and there is now a QMK-compatible keyboard that looks like this, please let me know!

bsnnkv··on I quit my job to work full time on my open source project
TIL about Atuin!

I just deployed this to my "everything" NixOS server with `services.atuin.enable` and synced a few of my machines up with it. Very cool! I hope this move goes well for Ellie!

bsnnkv··on An app can be a home-cooked meal (2020)
I love seeing whenever this is (re)posted.

This article had such a huge impact on my life and led to me creating many pieces of software[1][2][3] that were hyper-specific to myself and my needs at the time, which also later found an audience in others who think and work in ways similar to me.

[1]: https://notado.app - a "content-first" internet bookmarking and highlighting service which has been my second brain since 2020 after growing frustrated with Instapaper, Pinboard and Readwise. Eventually I expanded this to allow for RSS feed publishing on specific topics in an attempt to solve the "firehose" problem when following other peoples' bookmarks/shares, and at the end of last year I added what is now my most used feature of image generation from highlights for sharing on image-first/text-hostile social media platforms.

[2]: https://github.com/LGUG2Z/komorebi - tiling window manager for Windows. There wasn't really anything fit for purpose on Windows when I started, and I was too spoiled by bspwm and yabai on Linux and macOS that I just had to write something before I could become a truly productive Windows user. I'm astonished that this now has 50k+ downloads.

[3]: https://kulli.sh - I use this to aggregate comments from HN/Reddit/Lemmy/Lobsters on an article I'm interested in in one place to read. This has helped me find some interesting niche communities on Reddit and Lemmy who share and discuss things I'm interested in that I otherwise wouldn't have found.

bsnnkv··on 2023 was the year that GPUs stood still
Honestly I had the same thought but I'm not complaining since I got a cheap(er) 4090!
bsnnkv··on 2023 was the year that GPUs stood still
My experience of the 4090 is similarly positive. I ended up picking one up at a discount from a MicroCenter while I was traveling because someone had purchased it, realized when trying to install it into their case that it wouldn't fit, and then returned it. Probably the best purchase I've made all year as someone who plays video games, does some moderately intensive video editing for YouTube and likes playing around with local image generation and large language models.

My advice to anyone in the market for a new graphics card is to just save until you can get a 4090.

bsnnkv··on Show HN: Vocab Miner – find new words in Spanish from texts
I created something similar to this a while ago, but perhaps significantly more niche.

I like reading classical Dari poetry, but I'm not a native speaker. Every now and then, I read a couplet which has a word that I don't know, or that the dictionaries available to me (either from Iran or Afghanistan) don't provide clear explanations for.

I indexed a whole bunch of works from classical poets from across Central Asia, South Asia and the Middle East and created https://baytyab.com/ which lets me put in one of those words that I've come across, and see other couplets that the word has been used in to help me get a better, contextual understanding of its meaning(s) and usage(s).

bsnnkv··on Ask HN: What are your hobbies?
Swing dancing is the most important hobby I have because it is the foundation of my social circle and helps me to build relationships with people outside of my immediate professional and economic circles.

It's also great to be able to go to pretty much any reasonably sized city, head to a dance and immediately start building a new social circle.

Besides this, I have been making live programming videos on YT for a while, but more recently I've started experimenting with using video as a medium for storytelling and highlighting things I appreciate in the various communities I am a part of.[1]

bsnnkv··on Oxlint – JavaScript linter written in Rust
This is one of the real productivity superpowers of ecosystems like Go and Rust imo
bsnnkv··on HN-comments-drawer: one line HN comments integration into sites
Very cool idea and implementation.

I had considered offering something similar for https://kulli.sh which also aggregates comments on posts from a whole bunch of other sources too, but after reaching out to a number of people whose shared posts actually get comments here on HN and other places, I quickly realized there is not much desire for something like this from people whose writing is actually discussed.

bsnnkv··on Ask HN: How are you dealing with the job market anxiety?
Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately my recent experience has been that both recruiters and interviewers are more interested in LeetCode than in any public portfolio demonstrating the ability to ship correct, reliable code to tens of thousands of users across the world.
bsnnkv··on Ask HN: How are you dealing with the job market anxiety?
I was laid off a month ago, been looking since then and the market is pretty brutal.

Very difficult to get even screening interviews, portfolios of public work seem to be ignored, and even if you manage to get a screening interview, which is rarely with the hiring manager, you'll probably just get a templated rejection email from a person you haven't even interacted with the next day.

How am I dealing with it? I'm still applying away, it's not like I have much choice. Being frugal and trying to stretch the money we have in the bank. In the meantime I'm working on open source[1] and making programming videos on YouTube[2].
