bshep··on A few things to know before stealing my 914
as a guess it would go something like this:

step 1. prepare a usb with files needed to jailbreak the car and be able to connect to your wifi

step 2. setup a home network with dns/ntp and a reverse engineered tesla server that will authorize the car to work

step 3 set date to reasonable values that the car will accept

step 4 do some button dances to start the car from the usb

…

ill leave the rest to your imagination

bshep··on US Federal Reserve raises interest rates for first time since 2018
How did anyone buy a house or a car with interest rates in the 20%s?
bshep··on Nearly a third of TV ads play to empty rooms
I rarely watch broadcast TV.

I mainly watch streaming content with no ads. Whenever I do watch something over regular channel ( ex. my wife wanting to watch something thats not streamed ) the ads disgust me and the interruptions are super annoying, it just reminds me why i dont watch broadcast tv anymore and re-inforces my behavior.

bshep··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
you can use a tool called imap-sync ( at least thats what i remember it was called)
bshep··on Reverse-engineering a tiny 1980s chip that plays Christmas tunes
Any idea where i can source some of the -01L or 01S versions ( or something similar ). My google fu seems to be rusty… Id like 5-10 for some projects with the kids.
bshep··on Ask HN: Own .com for 7 years, a new company trademarked my name registered .NET
Does this apply even if I have an LLC with my name?

TBH this scares me quite a bit since we have all the family’s emails tied to the domain, not only would it be a huge pain to lose it but also a security risk. Weve had the domain for 10yrs or more at this point…

bshep··on Ask HN: Own .com for 7 years, a new company trademarked my name registered .NET
Out of curiosity, I have a similar question in the same vein.

I own MY_LAST_NAME.com, me and my family use it for email, ( i.e. firname@lastnane.com ) should we register a trademark to protect ourselves from this type of bullying? Are we safe since its our own last name?

bshep··on The Greedy Doctor Problem
This reminds me of something I think i heard ( or something similar ) in a movie :

“I’m not going to kill you, but you would surprised how much suffering you can live through.”

bshep··on Apple requires account deletion within apps in AppStore starting January 31
They say “well we have the online streaming you can use” or “we can txfer it to your new car” they’re just stubborn and incitvized to try to keep you. Whats worked the best for me is “i haven’t used it in 6months and dont want it”. theres nothing they can say to that.
bshep··on Apple requires account deletion within apps in AppStore starting January 31
SiriusXM is like this as well, you subscribe/upgrade online but you have to argue with a support person for 30-40mins to cancel, at least you can do it on a chat on their website.

Honestly if you can subscribe with a button you should be able to unsubscribe with a button.

bshep··on I just don’t want to be busy anymore
Im in a different field but I too have felt similarly.

I would suggest a couple of things:

- see a psychologist (not a psychiatrist, athough a psychiatrist may be step later on) - this should help you develop tools to make yourself better

- dont take work home, stop when you are tired - i saw that you fulfill multiple roles, could some of that be delegated? are you being compensated for those roles or did they just pile on over time? maybe its time to talk to your boss about it…

- take a real vacation, as in stay home and dont do anything

- excersize, avoid alcohol/substances

bshep··on A cross-platform GUI for YouTube-dl
I was just about to ask about something like this! I looked at the page but couldn’t figure out if this allows you to watch the downloaded videos in the browser as well, does anyone know or if there is another docker/web app for that?
bshep··on NYC major crime complaints fell when cops took a break from ‘proactive policing’
Example: Where I grew up if you didnt die within 24hrs or being shot it was not considered a murder, the gorvernment changed the way the statistic measures murders many years ago to lower the ‘murder’ rate.

Edit to add this link with the murder rates: https://www.statista.com/statistics/984823/homicide-rate-pue...

How does networking work? Can you create a network Altos, any network apps? like talk or finger?
bshep··on Three programmers got fired, including me, due to a single app crash

bshep··on Bring back menus, QR codes are terrible
So, if they have a captive portal, why not put the menu there before you login? That would even make the QR code a moot point, scan QR code or just connect to the wifi and menu magically appears…
bshep··on Crazy Clock
From the hackaday link you can load alternate firmawares but its not so easy due to the coil potentially interfering with the programmer.

I dont know much about this, but curious why you cant re-synthesize the HDL? Should the tools just be able to move it to the new process? ( Again my knowledge in this field is very limited so this may be a dumb question)

bshep··on On Training the Medical Mind
Oh completely agree, there is no ‘one size-fits-all’ solution, my point is that a checklist based approach would cover most cases, and for the rest you can take a different approach.

Also just in case you are ever sick, you NEVER want to hear the words ‘oh that’s interesting’ or ‘you are an interesting case’... there are a lot of rare diseases of which there are maybe 10 cases reported in the medicine books, and sure your doc can diagnose it but there may be no good treatment options ( since there is so little data all the accepted treatments are just guesses ).

In any case, if I’M ever sick i hope i fit the checklist, at least i know the diagnosis and treatment is well known and defined.

Edited to add: regarding hospice care, i wish this was more widely understood by non-medical people. I see so many people suffer unnecessarily because they don’t understand or their families refuse to understand. I cant speak about specific cases but I can say that some doctors have a gift of guiding their patients and some dont, and even the good one sometimes cant get through.

This is as you say a systemic problem and I dont have a good answer as to how to address it.

bshep··on On Training the Medical Mind
I tend to agree with you.

I work in a hospital setting and I would say 90+% of the time the issue is diagnosed following a checklist for a particular problem. In the medical field we are taught to think of a 'Differential Diagnosis', or DDx for short, and sort by probability based on the history, age, sex, etc of the patient. Of course in the hospital setting you would also think of 'which of these issues can possibly kill my patient in the next 24hrs' and look for those as well.

So you go down your DDx list and if you run out of diagnoses, go back to the history/patient and think about it some more or consult with your peers.

As far as the "House MD" situations, i haven't run into any of those so i can't comment on that part.

bshep··on Show HN: I built a Guitar Hero robot [video]
it might have been a mechanical issue on the guitar itself ( i remember a similar issue when i played the game, it would sometimes detect a double strum or miss it )

Anyway it looks awesome!

Their http interface is reasonable and you can configure/provision the APs from CAPSman from one of the routers/switches in a central location.
bshep··on Gallup: U.S. church membership dips below 50% for first time
Pretty much sums up my experience as well, I grew up going to church and every week it was ‘follow the church or go to hell’ and ‘you are all sinners going to hell’.

As an adult ( in a different geographic area ) I’ve been to church with my wife and its a much more positive experience.

In the end my ‘belief’ is in a moral code and not in a religion.

bshep··on 20-Minute Neighborhoods
this is a complex issues for sure, now the questionis what are these cases about?

if its stuff like parking tickets, broken tail lights, low-grade speeding then i totally agree woth the judge

if its drunk driving or driving while under the influence or things where you put others in danger then... why is the driver doing those things if their livelihoods depend on it?

Just food for thought
