bsdnoob··on Java 21 makes me like Java again
Imo problem with Java is... JVM because it's quite a resource intensive application itself, memory usage is orders of time magnitude worse than most of the language I've used.

bsdnoob··on Ask HN: Why does my '15 MacBook Air have the same RAM (8gb) as a '22 McBook Pro?
I am going to give out different statement than the consensus being formed in this thread.

It is a criminal act by any manufacturer to sell a computer with 8G of memory specially when it is not upgradeable.

bsdnoob··on Why We Switched from Python to Go (2021)
Go has a pretty decent standard library, you can go really far without adding a single third party library.
bsdnoob··on GoSTL: Algorithm and datastructure library for Go similar to C++ STL
You can use replace directive in go mod then you'd be able to load library from local path
bsdnoob··on Databases in 2021: A Year in Review
I think PostgreSQL in an excellent general purpose solution specially for OLTP usecases but what it lacks behinds is that it's hard to scale horizontally (sharding). There are solutions for this ofcourse with citus but I haven't experimented with it however I have tried MySQL with Vitess which almost seems like dark wizardry. I hope one day vitess works with PostgreSQL.
bsdnoob··on Open Source Tax Software
Do you not trust any opensource software and prefer only paid software to build your systems?
bsdnoob··on ExpressVPN employees complain about ex-spy's top role at company
I wouldn't say commercial VPNs are waste, It depends for what purpose do you want to use the VPN. Privacy? Yeah maybe not the best for that but these are extremely useful to bypass geoblocking of content. Moreover, many ISP do not like you downloading content via torrent. How do you propose we solve it? User experience with Tor is not always the best as well. Tor network does not have lots of bandwidth, It is okay for browsing but the moment you want to download something using Tor you'd notice that its actually very slow. I'd bet my money that using Tor would attract lot more attention by your ISP than using a regular VPN.

bsdnoob··on September 11, 2001 media synced in real-time
Do you really think it is insulting considering the pandemic response has been really bad. The extent to which the whole event is politicized which directly caused deaths of thousands of people every day is just mind baffling. The misinformation spread deliberately by the top leaders and their follower just to strengthen their power can hardly be called as "unintentional".
