brycelarkin··on Salesforce yields to activist pressure with harsh new policies for engineers
My guess is that Salesforce execs already wanted to do this and then hired BCG to back this idea.

At least, that’s how a lot of MBB consulting is.

brycelarkin··on Barnes and Noble's surprising turnaround
Both Barnes and Noble and Waterstones are owned by the same hedge fund (Elliot Management).

Looks like the hedge fund installed the new ceo when they purchased Barnes and Noble.

That hedge fund is probably filled with MBAs.

brycelarkin··on Ask HN: Is the world run by badly updated Excel sheets?
I think it depends. Used to work in asset management. Seven investors in our group managing $4.0bn in equity and debt investments.

We had complex, up-to-date excel models for every investment. We’d update them whenever the company released financials or when there were significant changes in rates.

brycelarkin··on AWS IAM Roles, a tale of unnecessary complexity
The CDK has made managing IAM so much easier for applications. It’s one of the main reasons we moved from Terraform to CDK.
brycelarkin··on The Sam Bankman-Fried empire crumbled. What happened?
Investing a small amount in an industry to learn about it is pretty common with institutional investors.
brycelarkin··on Show HN: Tier.run – Terraform for Stripe
How is this better than the Stripe Terraform provider? https://registry.terraform.io/providers/franckverrot/stripe/...
brycelarkin··on Launch HN: Lion Pose (YC W21) – Safe and effective skin care for people of color
Looks awesome! You mentioned that there’s not a lot of regulation of skincare products, but doesn’t the FDA regulate sunscreen pretty heavily? Like the US is behind Europe/Asia in sunscreens we offer because we’re not allowed to use any of the modern ingredients.

I typically purchase my sunscreen from Japan because they allow modern sunscreen ingredients.

brycelarkin··on Launch HN: Payload (YC S22) – Headless CMS for Developers
Understandable. Appreciate that you all have a monetization strategy already. One of my hesitations with adopting VC-backed open source projects is that a lot of them don’t have a clear business model.

We host Strapi on a server, so shouldn’t be a problem.

brycelarkin··on Launch HN: Payload (YC S22) – Headless CMS for Developers
This looks great! We use Strapi for our marketing site at https://articleasset.com and have been bitten by the lack of conditional logic before.

Is there any plan to support serverless deployment? We use Nextjs with incremental static regeneration, so will only need to query the cms service a couple times a day.

brycelarkin··on Tech Job Ads Up 52% Since First Half of 2022
I’ve worked at SaaS companies that invested in ui/ux and one of the common reasons we’d win deals is our app looked “nicer” than our competitors.

However, I do believe you can build a lasting saas business with a strong backend / weak frontend, but can’t do it with a weak backend / strong frontend.

brycelarkin··on Best practices for TypeScript monorepo
No problem with Next (idk about Nuxt). Checkout the Turborepo starter for how a pnpm/Next monorepo looks.
brycelarkin··on The Lonely Office Is Bad for America
Remote work for finance is way worse than tech. There’s an expectation that you’re on 24/7. This is opposed to in-office for finance jobs where there’s a little differentiation between being in the office and being at home.
brycelarkin··on Goldman told TWTR Elon’s $54.20 offer was too low but has a sell target at $30
Equity Research and the Investment Banking Division are completely different groups with procedures in place to make sure they never interact with each other.
brycelarkin··on A database for 2022
It looks like you guys use AWS. Why not just use RDS if you don’t want to deal with database management?
brycelarkin··on Vimeo: “We are a B2B solution, not the indie version of YouTube.”
I don’t believe her when she says this is because of bandwidth. Given Vimeo’s scale, they must have insanely low data out fees. The only way I can see what she’s saying being true is if there’s gross incompetence at the company and their cloud architecture is highly inefficient.
brycelarkin··on Launch HN: Livedocs (YC W22) – Live data in your documents, without code
How is this different from Coda? Our team has a Coda doc that connects to Jira and GitHub to pull live data on open tickets/PRs.
brycelarkin··on Atlas – Terraform but for Database Migrations
Is there a reason for creating your own DDL? I imagine it’d be possible to use SQL DDL, introspect the database, and then generate the appropriate DDL for the migration.

Does the Atlas DDL include more info over sql DDL?

brycelarkin··on Localstack – Local AWS Emulator
Awesome! I’ll give it a try
brycelarkin··on Localstack – Local AWS Emulator
How does Localstack compare to SAM and Serverless local? Is it easier to use?

Have a couple lambda services backed by API GW that I’d like to have a better dev env for.

brycelarkin··on Why Covid vaccines didn’t win a science Nobel this year
> Nominations for this year’s prizes had to be submitted by 1 February. This was more than two months after the first mRNA vaccines, and some others, proved their mettle in clinical trials, but before their impact on the pandemic was fully clear

Makes sense.

brycelarkin··on I Am Suing UCLA
The moment anyone emails me about diversity and inclusion, I’m forwarding that to my boss to deal with. Professor was walking through a minefield.
brycelarkin··on Postgres to TypeScript Interfaces and Enums
I think Prisma requires you to use their client to get the typing benefits, while this package just generates typings.
brycelarkin··on Zero-downtime schema migrations in Postgres using views
I think views are great way of abstracting out business logic. The one thing keeping me from using it more frequently is that it doesn’t work well with Row Level Security.
brycelarkin··on Launch HN: Procoto (YC W21) – Procurement SaaS for SMB
Hi Corry, I’ve worked with Bonfire in the past. You guys have a great product and excellent customer service/success!

I don’t want to out my prior employer, but just wanted you to know we thought the pricing was very good. Maybe it’s different for other gov entities, but we were definitely open to paying more.

brycelarkin··on Launch HN: Finley (YC W21) – Debt capital monitoring and reporting software
Looks cool! I use to work as a debt investor. Our group never really had trouble in the compliance area (really, it was just trying to deploy all our capital). I think in my time at the company, we've only had 2-3 misreported compliance certificates and we just asked the company to resend an updated version. From a debtor's point of view, is setting up the compliance infra for a note/revolver time intensive?
brycelarkin··on Launch HN: Procoto (YC W21) – Procurement SaaS for SMB
Looks cool! I use to work with some procurement groups. How is this different from the current rfp software out there rn (Scout, Ariba, Bonfire)? What makes it so that it’s for smb because I feel like theres a lot of similarity in the rfp process in enterprise and smb.
brycelarkin··on MasterCard data analytics opt-out page: where did it go?
Link to opt out Visa cards: https://marketingreportoptout.visa.com/OPTOUT/request.do
brycelarkin··on Show HN: Octo – Generate a serverless API from an SQL query
Also, you’d want to put the passwords/secrets table in a separate schema from the one you’re exposing postgraphile to
brycelarkin··on Show HN: Octo – Generate a serverless API from an SQL query
I’m building a project using one of those tools. I imagine that difficulty refactoring your database is more a problem of bad schema design than the tool. If you normalize and abstract out the implementation details into Views, I can’t see how refactoring would be difficult. Haven’t built anything at scale with Postgraphile/Harusa, so just wondering if I’m missing anything here.
brycelarkin··on SQLite Turns 20
I think the iPhone uses SQLite.
