brycelarkin··on Cloudflare employee posts layoff call with HR and goes viral [video]
Is “firing” 50 people different from “laying off” 50 people?
brycelarkin··on Soft Deletion Probably Isn't Worth It (2022)
Large tables use the delete table. Small tables use the deleted_at column.

Surprised you never got a request to undelete something. It’s such a common customer request in b2b saas.

brycelarkin··on UCLA will transform dead Westside mall into major science innovation center
I heard pre-pandemic, Google was going to purchase that space. Guess that deal fell through with remote work.
brycelarkin··on Deno Cron
I don’t think having a breadth of knowledge in frontend, backend, and cloud infra is too much to ask.

Think of how much is asked from other white collar professions such as law and medicine.

brycelarkin··on Ask HN: How to do transactional SMS as a bootstrapped or startup company?
Charge customers more to offset the cost. Pricing doesn’t get lower than AWS SNS.

SMS as a 2FA method is flawed (but better than no 2FA). I’d push users into more secure options. Doing so can also lower SMS cost.

brycelarkin··on Google Cloud Spanner is now half the cost of Amazon DynamoDB
Not true anymore after AWS’s ipv4 pricing announcement.
brycelarkin··on Asks HN: Solo founders-How to respond when customers ask how big is your company
update 1: Thanks everyone! I ended up being transparent and telling them it’s just me and we just released an mvp.

Will keep you all posted!

brycelarkin··on The Performance Cost of Node.js and GraphQL
Postgraphile just released their v5 update (still in beta) and it’s even more awesome than v4. No more crazy queries to address the n+1 problem.
brycelarkin··on Ask HN: Sales Tips for Solo Devs?
Has nothing to do with the original question. Is this AI generated?
brycelarkin··on Show HN: Deploying subdomain-based routing like github.io
Caddy’s awesome! Switched our local development stack from nginx to caddy.

Especially love how easy it is to set up localhost subdomains and ssl.

brycelarkin··on Tailwind and the death of web craftsmanship
I do a lot of UI work and have never understood the appeal of Tailwind. It’s like relearning a new language. Tailwind was released in 2017. Maybe the CSS landscape wasn’t as good back then? Modern CSS is pretty awesome.

I’ve enjoyed using Vanilla Extract https://vanilla-extract.style/. It’s like css-in-js with none of the downsides as everything gets compiled to css.

brycelarkin··on Tremor – The React library to build dashboards fast
Backend / API companies like Stripe and AWS
brycelarkin··on An Introduction to Saving Money
Questionable advice. Especially on paying off debt and saving money in a bank. And no mention of tax deferred accounts or index funds.
brycelarkin··on Important Coding Habits
I try to incorporate deadlifts into my workouts twice a week to prevent this.

Lower back pain is scary. During covid, when the gyms were closed, I couldn’t do deadlifts and felt the back pain coming. Thankfully everything opened up.

brycelarkin··on Binance lays off over 1k Employees
Cash comp or was he also compensated in tokens?
brycelarkin··on Ask HN: How do you help junior devs improve faster?
Lol. Aren’t you afraid you’re going to forget about those bugs and merge them in?
brycelarkin··on Spotify's AI DJ for Apple Music
Anyone make the switch from Spotify to Apple Music recently?

I considered it a couple years ago, but Spotify’s recommendations were much better back then.

Been seeing too many podcast ads and wondering if anyone can comment on switching?

brycelarkin··on Show HN: Kysely, a type-safe SQL query builder for TypeScript
Been using Drizzle for the past couple of weeks and liking it a lot. Their relation feature is awesome and solves the n+1 problem very nicely.
brycelarkin··on Representing Enums in PostgreSQL
The article misses the most common way to represent enums: foreign keys…
brycelarkin··on Ask HN: If Google Workspace/Gsuite disappeared tomorrow, where would you go?
Office’s core native apps (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) are the gold standard.

It’s annoying that they charge extra for the downloadable version considering their web apps are so bad.

brycelarkin··on Ask HN: If Google Workspace/Gsuite disappeared tomorrow, where would you go?
Microsoft Office 365.
brycelarkin··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
I’m guessing they looked at the data and saw that it was mostly consumers and not gcp customers using their domain service.
brycelarkin··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
AWS
brycelarkin··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
If you look at the api for AWS Route53 domain registration, it isn’t too complex. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/Route53/latest/APIReference/API_.... Definitely something Google could build out.
brycelarkin··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
Domain registration by itself isn’t a revenue stream if you’re charging base rates (which Google was doing). I think domain registration is to keep you in their cloud ecosystem.
brycelarkin··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
I purchase all my domains from AWS Route53 to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

I wonder what the rationale for doing this is? I just assumed cloud providers offered domain registration as a loss leader keep you in their ecosystem.

Can AWS offer support for “.dev” domains so I can transfer it there?

brycelarkin··on Why does a plastic-wrapped turkey sandwich cost $15 at the NYC airport?
Do cheap tickets actually impact airport revenue? My understanding is that airlines pay a set price per takeoff and landing. So airports should generate constant revenue regardless of fluctuation in ticket prices.
brycelarkin··on Ask HN: How to send a message to someone 20 years into the future?
Use the AWS free tier.

Add the message to a DynamoDB table with a send date. Create an Eventbridge rule that runs every month and calls a Lambda function. Have the Lambda function query the DynamoDB table and email you the message using SES if the time stamp is reached.

Assuming AWS doesn’t change their free tier in the next 20 years, this should be free.

brycelarkin··on AWS’s anti-competitive move hidden in plain sight
Some other things:

1. Depreciation of NAT instance ami in favor of managed NAT

2. No EKS free tier

brycelarkin··on Things I learned after getting users
I felt the same way until I found sqlx (https://github.com/launchbadge/sqlx). The package lets you write sql in your app with compile-time checks. Was so much easier to get up and running than learning a new ORM.
