brw··on Chris Wanstrath "defunkt" GitHub cofounder and former CEO is banned on GitHub
Same here. I have my own domain set as the main email address of my personal Google account (I have in fact deleted the Gmail one altogether, as I noticed that otherwise some websites would still pick the Gmail address over the custom domain one when using SSO). Not many people seem to know you can do this without Google Workspace, or that you can have a Google account without a Gmail address.

If I ever lose access to my Google account I can just set a password through the "forgot my password" feature (I've noticed this is often also the only way to set a password if you create an account through SSO with some websites, but it does work). The convenience of SSO with an escape hatch as you say.

brw··on How do we pay for parking?
While on holiday in the States for the first time recently I actually changed my Play Store country to be able to download some US specific parking app, not knowing that I apparently have to wait a full year before I can change my country again (I don't remember reading this during the process).

Explaining this to Google Play and Google One customer support led to nothing, they just told me to wait out the full year essentially. I'm just stuck with it for now.

I believe that since February 1st (so 4 days ago) you can also use contactless debit and credit cards for train travel throughout the entirety of the Netherlands. I think that most if not all regional public transport providers, for say bus/tram/metro, already support it as well.

Can't use it when you have a subscription though, so a lot of people here will still be using their plastic public transport cards for personal and work travels, including me, but it's nice to have the possibility at least.

brw··on Show HN: Figure is a daily logic puzzle game
I've been playing Cell Tower[1] for a while now, and it's one of the few that does allow you to redo previous puzzles you've missed (or have already taken and just want to redo anyway). The streak however only increases when you play today's puzzle.

brw··on Mail Tester
Well, they state they don't sell any email addresses[1], and delete any data after a certain amount of days, only using it for averages and anonymous stats. Looking at the other comments here and in the past[2] the site has been very helpful to quite a few people over quite a few years.

I'd also say it's a bit weird to reduce OVH, which is arguably the largest European cloud provider, to just protecting spammers and scammers or being pro-spammer. But that's just my opinion based on my experiences, you may consider it to be different.

The company behind it is called WOOBEO, based in France, as listed in their TOS[3]. You can probably look up more information about them. Or you could contact them and ask them directly even[4].

All in all, if you think you have a good reason not to trust this site, or any site like it, it seems simple enough to just decide to not use it, like with any online service. I suppose this is just like any other risk/reward situation, and the reward seems to outweigh the risk for most people.

brw··on Tell HN: GitHub is down again
At least this outage allowed me to discover this cute pixel art octocat loading icon on the activity feed. Never noticed it before because I believe it always loads near instantaneously, or maybe I just never paid enough attention to it.

brw··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of all your Discord servers?
Ah push notifications, that's smart. Don't think that would really work for me as I actually use Discord a ton and use push notifications to only notify me of important channels, but cool nonetheless.

And yea I know client modifications haven't been allowed in years, although they haven't really cracked down on it much aside from completely separate third party clients.

brw··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of all your Discord servers?
Any chance you could share more about this notification system? I do know of client modifications that allow you to track certain keywords, but I haven't heard of anything that would email you without even having to run Discord. Except for bots, but those could only be used in servers you own or moderate.
brw··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of all your Discord servers?
I believe this is actually in development. I've seen some previews shared by people who datamine new Discord releases, so it may or may not become available soon.

brw··on How to build a second brain as a software developer
This is also my exact workflow. Currently at 260 tabs after an OS reset but I've gone up to 1-2k before (though that was a particularly bad time for me). Every tab or bookmark manager I've tried just didn't feel right, too much friction, too little return, eventually forgotten.

I feel like the tool I'm looking for doesn't exist, but I don't really know what I'm looking for either.

brw··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community
> Members of the server must have a verified email on their Discord account before sending messages or DMing anyone in the server. (Note that this doesn’t apply to users that have assigned roles!)[1]

I also help with running a community server which doesn't have the phone number requirement enabled either. It's also not required for partnered servers as far as I'm aware.

You can even get around the email requirement if you just add a bot that gives every new user a role, since any role will automatically verify you as mentioned here.

brw··on Unpopular opinion: Weekdays/weekend split isn't for everyone
Same here! Wednesday used to be the day I had college while working four days a week but when I quit college it just became my day off. I find that it works quite well for me while most of my colleagues seem to prefer having a three day weekend with either Friday or Monday being their day off.

I suppose there's pros and cons to either approach (which I haven't really researched at all yet) but to me right now breaking up a continuous stream of work days makes total sense (while still fitting for the 9-5 custom, which I, like many people, don't prefer but I haven't had any better opportunities yet).

Hahah, I was also on mobile. The mobile website of Wolfram Alpha works pretty good, they also have an app but haven't tried it yet.

Your query doesn't exactly work though, it's interpreted as "paris at speed of sound". However "time between amsterdam and paris at the speed of sound in milliseconds" does work, returning 1.26*10^6 ms.
