brutal_chaos_··on We created a fake delivery company to get a job
Firefox, Android, uBlock Origin, JavScript off, I believe I see it all. (text, images, ect)
brutal_chaos_··on Ants can carry out life-saving amputations on injured nest mates, study shows
I have watched many hours of that channel. I'm no ant expert, nor do I have much interest in ants in general, but that channel made understanding ant behavior sensational! Big props to the creator
brutal_chaos_··on 1 in 4 U.S. Teachers Say AI Tools Do More Harm Than Good in K-12 Education
I am in school currently and have had students sitting next to me use ChatGPT to help with some in class quizzes, we are allowed to use other resources, so it wasn't cheating. For some of the questions, ChatGPT was flat wrong when analyzing code. One specific question was asking where errors were in a block of code by line number, ChatGPT gave the wrong line number and wrong number of lines on top of that. The student actually knew how to answer the question, but didn't want to think. In a different class, a prof said she knew some students were using ChatGPT because the errors some students made were the same errors ChatGPT made and they were kind of dumb mistakes if you knew what was going on.

I don't mean to say your experience isn't possible nor a fluke. What I mean to say is, if you don't know something, ChatGPT shouldn't be your only resource, you won't know when it's wrong.

edit: words, spelling

brutal_chaos_··on macOS Sonoma silently enabled iCloud Keychain despite my precautions
Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I'm pretty sure "we take your privacy seriously" has always been marketing and nothing more. they could say that because they aren't Google who really doesn't care about privacy. So in comparison, it was "correct." Regardless, they are a company and companies can change their ideals at any point, so one should never take marketing strategies seriously (not that you did, just a general warning).
brutal_chaos_··on Carmakers Will Give Your Location to Police Without a Warrant, Senators Say
> Tesla does not divulge your location to law enforcement without a warrant

Good to know, but legally this can change whenever Tesla wants, no?

brutal_chaos_··on SB-1047 will stifle open-source AI and decrease safety
I can't say for sure wrt tech industry specifically, but regulatory capture is nothing new.
brutal_chaos_··on SB-1047 will stifle open-source AI and decrease safety
That is called regulatory capture, which could definitely be happening here.
brutal_chaos_··on Control Linux based distros using hand gestures using OpenCV, GTK, Mediapipe
Quite pleasant, eh? I hope we see more projects without them.
brutal_chaos_··on 20 years ago Gmail revolutionized email. It's time for a new revolution
Yes it was. It took years before I had a limit. I used to use gmail like google drive well before drive existed. There was even a tool called gmaildrive(0).

(0): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMail_Drive

Edit to Add: Apparently the storage wasn't unlimited? At least from a cursory look at Wikipedia. Huh. Memory is a funny thing.

brutal_chaos_··on I recorded a screen capture of a task. Gemini generated code to replicate it
https://in.indeed.com/m/jobs?q=wayfair&l=&sc=0kf%3Afcckey%28...

wayfair laid off a bunch of US IT staff and are trying to build an AI in india to replace workers (I think, based on events and new job opennings).

edit:typos

adt'l: tbf, AI hasn't actually replaced jobs there yet (afaik)

brutal_chaos_··on Google Pay app will no longer be available
FTA:

Can I still use the tap to pay feature in stores?

Anywhere you normally use Google Pay — from checking out online to tapping and paying in stores — remains the same. If you use your Android phone to shop in stores where Google Pay is accepted, you can continue to tap to pay in stores with the Google Wallet app.

brutal_chaos_··on Show HN: macOS-cross-compiler – Compile binaries for macOS on Linux
> A cross compiler is a compiler capable of creating executable code for a platform other than the one on which the compiler is running. For example, a compiler that runs on a PC but generates code that runs on an Android smartphone is a cross compiler.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_compilation

So compile on Linux, run on macOS without Rosetta

brutal_chaos_··on My kid sounds like ChatGPT, and soon yours might, too
True, I should have added that note. Thanks for the correction.

brutal_chaos_··on Biden pardons marijuana use nationwide
> This comes off as election year pandering but it also probably shouldn't be a crime to begin with.

Normally I would agree, though this has been a process, not just this quick vote grab.

Edit to add: The timing of the process is probably for the benefit of votes and the like.

brutal_chaos_··on How to Escape a Container
A container is a security boundry. However, no security boundry is perfect and more boundries must be put in place as well, depending on your threat model.

edit: typo

brutal_chaos_··on End of Life of Technologies and Devices
Crowd sourced EOL docs. I like it!
brutal_chaos_··on Welcome to the ad-free internet
Welcome to a niche of the web, which is a niche of the Internet, of which wants all of your money pls. Oh? The fight (ad-free or ad-ridden) alone makes more money, because, "ad money or subscription money pls", which in turn equals more clicks for them.

You can argue, "yeah, but what about ublock origin (or another ad blocker)?" To you, they'd (speculatively) say, "ye are few, why bother."

brutal_chaos_··on Red Programming Language
FYI, the link from the first bullet point "human friendly syntax" (aka syntax) points to https://pointillistic.com/ren/ which is broken, returning a page that states:

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

brutal_chaos_··on Dingo, an open source robot dog
Firefox on Android with uBlock Origin does indeed work. And, if I'm not mistaken, aren't most devices Androids?

Edit to Add: TBF, most users may not have the technical know-how to use it in this way.

brutal_chaos_··on Ask HN: Has Google search switched to infinite scrolling for you too now?
I stopped using Google for most searches for a long while now. I suggest you do the same. It's not like they're going to make user centric changes now, just wallet centric ones.
brutal_chaos_··on Update from Lemmy after the Reddit blackout
yes, and the moderation problems will start July 1st. 26k is nothing, for sure, to Reddit. But every movement starts small. For now, Reddit doesn't have to worry and Lemmy can up their game.

Also, what about kbin numbers? How many have stopped using Reddit, but didn't switch networks?

This one number doesn't mean much since Lemmy isn't Reddit's only problem.

brutal_chaos_··on Reddit CEO tells employees that subreddit blackout ‘will pass’
doubtful. if the blackout doesn't stay, the issue will be forgotten about. The majority of users won't see a difference for awhile, probably until a bit after Reddit goes public and makes the API switch. and by then investors will have pulled money out, moderators won't be able to moderate, and Reddit will die slowly (or quickly, depending on spam volume after the switch).
brutal_chaos_··on 'Tear Gas Tuesday' in Downtown Portland
it's also awfully convenient to assume that only the protesting party is at fault.
brutal_chaos_··on Vanishing phone customer support is driving us all insane
Same, though on spotty net, chat may not work or may not work well. Email is great when traveling.
brutal_chaos_··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
People may want to reconsider what a reputation actually is, because it seems SVB was not a good bank despite its reputation. I'm guessing they marketed to dumb money; people who won't look past some marketing and attached names (e.g. Peter Thiel) and assume all is good.

In general, I think more due diligence is needed, even with a good reputation. (e.g. look into lobbying efforts. if they are lobbying for weakened rules, they may be violating/doing something illegitimate already a la FTX).

Enron was reputable, for example. Different situation, i know, but the point is reputation is great, due diligence is better (i don't know what good DD would be in the Enron case, perhaps the fact they pushed a 100% buy in would be one of many red flags, for example).

I do think workers should be paid, btw. However, the c-level team/s that made the choice to bank with SVB aught to lose out because it was their bet that tanked the company (or otherwise hurt it financially).

Tis are my admittedly outside/naïve perspective.

brutal_chaos_··on Justice Department says Google destroyed evidence related to antitrust lawsuit
that doesn't male either right.
brutal_chaos_··on New York University professor fired after students say his class was too hard
They could also be the type of people that get chemical/bioweapons/newer weapons banned from international war, as other pink smoke mortar loving people have done in the past.
brutal_chaos_··on This page is a truly naked, brutalist HTML quine (2019)
old.Reddit.com

I think you mean. Current Reddit, IMHO, is a UI dumpster fire.
