brutal_chaos_··on Vramfs: Vram Based Filesystem for Linux
Regarding *, do you know why? Shouldn't dual/quad channel be in effect?
brutal_chaos_··on Google change is breaking some digital photo frames
> While the change is designed to make your photo library more private, it’s also breaking how digital photo frames — such as those made by Aura and Cozyla — automatically update slideshows on their devices.

> Last month, Google announced that Google Photos slideshows would soon be available as ambient displays or screensavers on more third-party devices. The feature is currently available on Google Nest displays and Google TVs.

Sounds like anti-competitive behavior with privacy as the scape goat, imho. A feature for 3rd parties stops working as Google is rolling out that same feature for their own products?

brutal_chaos_··on Git without a forge
I do this as well. Act Runner is great, too, if you want CI. It can be finicky, but I'm running it on a Pi4, so not the best setup for that.
brutal_chaos_··on Treasury Announces Suspension of Enforcement of Corporate Transparency Act
Because no one will stop them.
brutal_chaos_··on Jeff Bezos' revamp of 'Washington Post' opinions leads editor to quit
Can you cite this claim?
brutal_chaos_··on Trump expected to take control of USPS and fire postal board
Party? Probably not. However, it would favor the working class as not everyone can take a day to go to the polls. It also helps the elderly, medically fragile, and others who otherwise have trouble getting to the polls. Nevermind the voters who happen to be traveling abroad and want to cast their votes.
brutal_chaos_··on Trump expected to take control of USPS and fire postal board
I wonder if this will hinder vote by mail somehow.
brutal_chaos_··on Microsoft deletes official Windows 11 CPU/TPM bypass for unsupported PCs
If there was no vendor lock in, you'd only need one key, no?
brutal_chaos_··on YouTube's New Hue
Just aheads up, one should be using uBlock Origin, not uBlock. In short, AdBlock now owns the old uBlock

Passkeys are also a great way to have vendor lock-in.
brutal_chaos_··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
This is true. I know the change wasn't just DEI, but I thought it might have been the biggest push. And yeah, after it's gone we will see how much it helped (or not), or other influences will muddy the data and we'll never really know (unless it's a really big trend). shrug
brutal_chaos_··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
Oh ok, that makes sense. I can agree with that. Given that, I worry the number of women will stagnate or decrease without it, which, imho, would be a detriment to the industry.
brutal_chaos_··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
If DEI was only marketing, why has the number and proportion of women in tech been increasing over that time? I'm not trying to challenge you, I'm just curious if you have any insight.

ETA: and do you think that number will increase, stagnate, or decrease with DEI gone, and why?

brutal_chaos_··on Autodesk deletes old forum posts suddenly
Tbf, if you're lucky, there is web.archive.org and others like it, but yes, situations like those are common and disappointing.
brutal_chaos_··on Blogs rot. Wikis wait
How is fandom shitty now? I'm asking from a newer user perspective. What did standalone wikis do better?

My initial guess is ads, but is there more to it?

brutal_chaos_··on Microsoft Confirms Password Deletion for 1B Users
How would that work without a homogenious setup? Won't all devices need to be with Apple or Microsoft (etc)? Or is there a standard/cross platform solution?
brutal_chaos_··on Classified fighter jet specs leaked on War Thunder forums
Everything is open source* if you know assembly, so to speak.

Edit: *source available

brutal_chaos_··on Cannabis pollen dispersal across the United States
Isn't it also a problem for breeders? I would think pollenation could cause issues for indoor as well as outdoor crops, especially specific strain breeding and understanding pollenation patterns would help mitigate some of that.
brutal_chaos_··on Why GCC 1.42 on the Tektronix 4404 – with a C compiler from 1979
This was a fascinating read! I truly enjoy deep dives into the relics of the early(ier) years. I'm curious if there exists a virtual machine for the Tektronix 4404, I think it'd be fun to tinker with devices like those in software since it's unlikely one will ever pass through my hands.
brutal_chaos_··on Microsoft Confirms Password Deletion for 1B Users
I currently have moat passwords synced with firerox. If I lose or break a device currently, I can restore from another, synced, device. If while using passkeys I lose or break my device, then what?
brutal_chaos_··on Intel’s board, and an example of when boards and short-termism fail

brutal_chaos_··on Rust9x update: Rust 1.84.0-beta
I love watching projects like these progress. It seems like a passion project and such a joy to tinker with. Great work Dennis!
brutal_chaos_··on US house prices in 1950 vs. 2024, accounting for inflation
Using the Tor Browser, I kept trying "New Circuit" and it eventually showed the page. It took ~6+ tries though
brutal_chaos_··on U.S. chip revival plan chooses sites
My hunch is something like NAFTA -> USMCA would happen with CHIPS. Repeal and replace with basically the same to make it look like a GOP win.
brutal_chaos_··on Poll: Do you use browser profiles?
I start firefox with -P every time I open the browser. I use it to compartmentalize my browsing habbits. E.g. if I'm working on schoolwork, I have a school profile w/o any social media passwords stored. I also have a general browsing profile and a few others like banking.
brutal_chaos_··on Google Play killed my game and won't tell me why
Chicken and egg. People need to also host on F-Droid to pull more users to F-Droid. Eventually if enough momentum is built towards F-Droid, dropping Google Play wouldn't be too much of an issue. Granted this is a really long longshot, but Google Play could use some serious competition amd the more apps that host on multple app stores, the more likely that is to happen.
brutal_chaos_··on T-Mobile pays $16M fine for three years' worth of data breaches
What a joke. Why would they stop? The US needs privacy as a right for its citizens. This is so disheartening.
brutal_chaos_··on Earth has caught a 'second moon'
FTA: "You may say that if a true satellite is like a customer buying goods inside a store, objects like 2024 PT5 are window shoppers."

The article agrees with you. It's always those pesky headlines.

brutal_chaos_··on Qubit Transistors Reach Error Correction Benchmark
I think the article has been corrected. I read it after seeing this comment and couldn't find whales while reading nor with ctrl+f
brutal_chaos_··on NSA releases 1982 Grace Hopper lecture
