brunorsini··on Gambling with our lives: AI researcher quits Anthropic with warning about safety
If AI is spawning content of its own, it's accumulating attention time. If they spawn crypto wallets they can accumulate "money", etc.
brunorsini··on Gambling with our lives: AI researcher quits Anthropic with warning about safety
I particularly like the last point he makes here:

Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources.

It's interesting to see so much hate towards creators who use AI to make almost any type of creative work. At least these are humans using it as "controllable tools". Nuclear-powered bicycles for the mind.

As the degree of separation increases, things can get interesting. "Create several social media accounts, post whatever, maximize views and engagement, give me back the aggregate numbers". "Now promote <x>."

And then decisions to do things like that may soon be happening autonomously, as just another step in a reasoning series aiming to achieve some other, broader goal.

Open models/weights may end up playing particularly important roles here. Users may, knowingly or not, bypass system prompt-derived safety that could have offered much needed protection.

brunorsini··on "The Persian MâR-Nâmeh Or, the Book for Taking Omens from Snakes" (1892)
Go straight to the source, Iranian cinema is awesome and widely available.

An easy starter is last year's "It Was Just an Accident", which was nominated for a couple of Oscars. It goes from being hilarious to offering a deep reflection on vengeance vs reparation.

Kiarostami and Farhadi are also two great directors to explore.

brunorsini··on I love my Bluetooth keyboard
I've always wanted a phone keyboard that folds yet still types reasonably well. Tried a few, hated them all.
brunorsini··on A sufficiently detailed spec is code
A sufficiently detailed spec was actually a small step in the path to functional code.

Then came all sorts of shenanigans, from memory management to syntax hell, which took forever to learn effectively.

This stage was a major barrier to entry, and it's now gone — so yeah, things have indeed changed completely.

brunorsini··on Ask HN: Conversational AI to Learn a Language
Try https://www.issen.com (YC company).
brunorsini··on Mario Vargas Llosa has died
He once punched Gabriel García Márquez. I remember learning about this while reading Vargas Llosa as an adolescent, still sounds hard to believe: https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2019/03/06/when-mario-va...
brunorsini··on Rsync replaced with openrsync on macOS Sequoia
After decades using rsync for my local backups, I recently switched to ChronoSync Express. It's simple to use, with a sensible GUI and well-laid-out customization options.

And btw, it's included on Setapp subscriptions.

brunorsini··on Show HN: Doom (1993) in a PDF
Next up: Acrobat in a PDF!
brunorsini··on Show HN: A singing synthesizer for the browser with automatic 3-part harmony
Oh, and clicking multiple times at the leftmost portion of the instrument (around 1/4th from the top) sounds exactly like Laurie Anderson's classic "O Superman" :)
brunorsini··on Show HN: A singing synthesizer for the browser with automatic 3-part harmony
Fun! I'd love the option to increase (double?) range. It would sacrifice precision somewhat, so a toggle would be ideal.

A toggle for quickly visualizing notes would also be useful, as well as keyboard shortcuts — perhaps while one clicks the mouse on a given note, pressing the keyboard shortcut for another specific note gradually moves pitch in that direction, with programmable speed.

brunorsini··on He Built Apple's 1980s iPad Concept [video]
Highly recommend the documentary on General Magic. They were actually trying to build the iPhone as early as 1989 (and into the 90s). My former boss Meghan Smith was part of that team, she loved it — and so many Silicon Valley companies came out of that project. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTdyb-RWNKo
brunorsini··on Efficient Track Anything
Does anyone know of a method for plugging the output of models like this one with traditional video editing software like Adobe Premiere?
brunorsini··on Micron launches 60TB PCIe gen5 SSD with 12GB/s read speeds
Moore's law: making us disappointed by the storage industry since 1965.
brunorsini··on Machines of Loving Grace
I agree. Curtis consistently makes films that are a lot more about opinion and interpretation than anything else. He is not bad with facts, but he does have a tendency to present the viewer with an avalanche of data points... only to later express what is basically his opinion, often not even directly linked to the facts that have just been presented.

With that in mind, I still find his opinions interesting, original and provocative. Also, his films have some of the coolest imagery ever — if I recall correctly he used to work at the BBC, dealing with their archives.

brunorsini··on Machines of Loving Grace
Adam Curtis made a fantastic documentary on the darker side of our relationship with technology. I don't agree with all of his points, but it's still a great watch.

From Wikipedia: Curtis argues that computers have failed to liberate humanity, and instead have "distorted and simplified our view of the world around us".

brunorsini··on A conserved fertilization complex bridges sperm and egg in vertebrates
The animation illustrating the AlphaFold-predicted structural models of the trimeric sperm complex in zebrafish, mice and humans shows shocking similarity.

I remember Richard Dawkins talking about the "male fertility crisis" some years ago, and how little we still truly knew about it. Maybe this can shed some light.

brunorsini··on We're forking Flutter
Anyone else experiencing déjà vu from the days of transitioning from Angular to Angular 2?
brunorsini··on Show HN: FTWA – Turn any website into an app
Been using Unite for years — https://www.bzgapps.com/unite. It's a little better since v5, but it's still pretty buggy, which frustrates me.

Eager to try your product! Have you considered including it on SetApp?

brunorsini··on Ask HN: Did you personal website help you get hired? Tell about it
I've also been wondering about this question. It feels like society is increasingly valuing thinking in public, which hasn't really been my style. I've always preferred to think, debate and learn in smaller, almost always private chat groups and forums — yet I suspect this might end up hurting my career.
brunorsini··on iPhone 16 Pro Storage Expansion 128GB to 1TB [video]
This dude has more manufacturing skills than most countries.
brunorsini··on I won't be renewing my Pinboard subscription
Ouch, I never knew my Pinboard data is at risk. Terrifying.
brunorsini··on Ask HN: What macOS apps/programs do you use daily and recommend?
The first thing I install when I get a new mac. Peter ftw.

For everyone recommending Rectangle, for instance... I just have a few Keyboard Maestro macros. KM probably replaces half a dozen other apps for me.

brunorsini··on Apple announces new accessibility features, including eye tracking
This is the beginning of the end for the mouse — not just on phones, but on desktops, everywhere. I highly recommend everyone to at least schedule a free Apple Vision demo at the local Apple Store.
brunorsini··on New Aztec Codices Discovered: The Codices of San Andrés Tetepilco
+1. Been there 4 or 5 times and feel I'm only scratching the surface. So much that is still to be understood about all those incredible pieces.
brunorsini··on In 2023 Organic Maps got its first million users
I've used Guru Maps over the years for the same purpose (eg, tracing my path in walks/drives through regions without carrier coverage). Curious to see how this compares.
brunorsini··on Animate Anyone: Image-to-video synthesis for character animation
Apologies for the lazy question... But with so many incredible models being released, how are you all keeping up? Are you mostly trying them all out on the web or are you installing each of them locally?
brunorsini··on Writing documentation for your house
I do it in Notion, and it's shared with everyone who either lives or hangs out in here a lot.

Biggest advantage is that Notion is pretty good with multimedia content — embedded photos / videos / PDFs, gallery view for databases... And the best documentation for a home is often just pictures and videos.

- Here's how the sauna guy wired the equipment - This is what the old room looked like before we changed the walls - These are the xmas ornaments we're storing in the garage, etc

PS: I love Obsidian but use it mostly in single-player mode

brunorsini··on The bash book to rule them all
Thanks for the recommendation. In my case, GPT revolutionized the way I use bash. If you know what you want to accomplish, gone are the days of endlessly fiddling around with syntax.
brunorsini··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
Kudos to MSFT for the blog post title of the year... Regardless of whether those GPU fleets came up with it or not :)
