broth··on How We Manage a Million Push Notifications an Hour
I really like the diagram in this blog post. Is that diagram custom made or did you use software to create it?
broth··on How to return to the flow faster
What typically works for me is just pencil and paper. I have a notebook that I use to log notes for each business day of the week. If I'm having trouble figuring out what I was working on during the previous day, I simply look at the previous day's notes.

Writing notes helps commit things to memory better for me too. Also, using paper to write notes is less of a distraction than using an electronic medium to write notes in this day and age.

broth··on Show HN: StoryTime – Create stories about your code instead of documentation
Very interesting concept. I found that the transitions were too quick for me to read the descriptions at the bottom of the page. It might be nice to set this transition interval or perhaps click to advance.
broth··on Milky Way’s Black Hole Just Flared, Growing 75 Times as Bright for a Few Hours
Out of curiosity, is it possible that some cataclysmic event in the universe happened thousands of years ago that has yet to reach and potentially affect Earth?
broth··on The Horror of Microsoft Teams
Back in my senior year of high school during Spanish class I naively used NET SEND to send a message to one of my classmates. The only problem was that I failed to specify the user in the command and instead used *. This ended up sending a message to all computers in the school district.

I remember the computer administrator coming into the class saying “Are you aware one of your students is sending messages to the entire school district?” My heart sank.

I ended up getting in-school suspension. Considering this was my first ever “offense” in school, I felt like a badass going out with a bang.

broth··on How Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun punished the computers of the day [video]
This is one game that always impressed me as a child.

Things I loved about the game:

- Destructible terrain, buildings, and vehicles.

- Ambient lighting.

- Exciting story with known actors.

One thing that always frustrated me was on the back of the box it showed the ability to create light towers but I don’t think that was ever possible in the game without mods.

broth··on Looks like you can mention anyone subscribed to Microsoft Teams
Looks like various reports coming in stating that you're able to "@" mention people outside of your organization in Microsoft Teams.
broth··on Goodbye Docker: Purging Is Such Sweet Sorrow
I glanced over at the Docker in Practice book on my nightstand and there is his name. Surreal.
broth··on Perils of Constructors
Any programming language or scripting language can be misused — especially when it comes to misusing constructors or some other mechanic. I think it boils down to knowing these language pitfalls and establishing standards to follow and help guard against them.

> I’d never really got to the bottom of it

Perhaps it might have been worth the extra time to get to the bottom of it instead of switching and, in the end, not noticing any big differences?

Also, I noticed there was an ad at the end of the post for the book Docker in Practice. Ironic placement.

broth··on Google Cloud's run rate is now over $8B
Update

This ended up being due to SNI getting enabled on our HTTPS binding in IIS when using a Let's Encrypt cert. Apparently, the GCP HTTPS LB does not like SNI.

broth··on Google Cloud's run rate is now over $8B
All Stackdriver logs for the load balancer have the following for each request as the status details: failed_to_connect_to_backend

We've tried the following with no luck: - Restarted GCE instances in backend service - Recreated the backend service - Recreated the HTTPS load balancer - Switched the balancing mode of the backend service to rate instead of utilization since monitoring was stating the backend service CPU utilization was 500% (another red flag)

We are, however, able to directly connect to the GCE instances within the backend service via external IP.

Have not heard much back from Google support.

broth··on Google Cloud's run rate is now over $8B
You also have to account for the incidents that customers face that don't show up in the status dashboard until a certain influx of support tickets raise the flag.

For example, right now we're facing an issue where one of our GCP HTTPS load balancers is suddenly failing to connect to any backend service for reasons unknown. Not sure if there was any correlation to the eight reported service disruptions on the status dashboard.

broth··on Manual Work is a Bug – Always be automating (2018)
I would argue not all manual work is a bug nor does all manual work need to be automated. For example, if you have a manual task that needs to be done once per quarter, is it really worth investing time and money to automate it? In contrast, if you have a manual task that you do multiple times per day, then perhaps that's worth investing resources to automate that task.
broth··on Click farms: a shadowy internet industry is booming in China
I feel like this approach would eventually become gamed since you could still have human participants act as engaged users.
broth··on Could the Apollo 11 moon landing be duplicated today? ‘Lots of luck with that’
It's interesting to ponder the feats in technological advancement that were made in short periods of time in the 20th century. For example, in 1948 when the transistor was first revealed by Bell Labs to 1969 when mankind landed on the moon. Around 20 years. That's pretty amazing.
broth··on Argdown
Right. I totally missed that. Thanks for pointing that out.
broth··on Argdown
Not sure why on the downvotes. I was more curious if you could link to a specific source file.
broth··on Argdown
Would you be able to provide some specific examples?
broth··on Ask HN: How to deal with constantly getting cut off in work discussions?
Squeaky wheels.

Things to try:

- Schedule a follow-up meeting and discuss your concerns and suggestions.

- Try raising your hand. This might seem ridiculous but give it a try.

- Talk with your manager about this concern and try and suggest solutions like the ones above.

broth··on Ask HN: How do you personally learn?
1. When learning something, learn it in small chunks — like reading a chapter at a time from a book. Then write things down on paper and review regularly.

2. Keep a bullet journal[1] for learning new things.

3. Try explaining what you learn to your spouse, friend, coworker, and see if they can understand it. If you’re able to explain it in simple enough terms then most likely you have mastered that. Also, teaching reinforces your knowledge.

broth··on VPN owners: 97 VPN products run by 23 companies
You should really do some due diligence on finding the right VPN for your needs.

I recommend you read this https://thatoneprivacysite.net/choosing-the-best-vpn-for-you...

broth··on VPN owners: 97 VPN products run by 23 companies
Your ISP is only going to see the IPs of the VPN nodes, times you connect, and the bandwidth used but not what sites you are browsing.
broth··on A Learning Secret: Don't Take Notes with a Laptop (2014)
Mind sharing how you use Notepad++ to take notes? Why is it wonderful?
broth··on Cosmologist claims Universe may not be expanding (2013)
Why is that the wrong path? I think these are valid questions. Please, I’m curious to hear your thoughts.
broth··on Cosmologist claims Universe may not be expanding (2013)
This is something that has always intrigued me. What could possibly contain the universe? Another universe perhaps?
broth··on Facebook Decided Which Users Are Interested in Nazis – and Let Ads Target Them
Don't these exist already? [1] Other than that, I can relate to the other comments of just doing away with social networks on the web and replacing it with real-life communication via talking, phone calls, emails, or text messaging. As I get older I realize how much I miss the traditional ways of communicating without being inundated and distracted by constant notifications from present day social networks.

broth··on Leukemia Has Won
Mortality is one of those things that I grow more accustomed to the older I get. I hate it. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about death or things that cause death. Death is everywhere — the news, social media — two things I try to avoid. However, we cannot avoid death. We are all just living to die.
broth··on Show HN: Make your site’s pages instant in one minute
I’m wondering if a possible use case for this is to use it to warm up app servers when doing deployments?

Enumerate through a list of pages on your site and use something like Puppeteer to simulate hovering over links on each page.

broth··on Ask HN: What company environment has enabled your best work?
I work in an open office environment. This is great for rapidly communicating with co-workers and having people eavesdrop and chime in when necessary. However, this can be a big impediment to productivity for some people.

What has worked for me to facilitate my best work is to reserve a meeting room to myself for one or two hour slots during the week. This allows me to close the door, put my back to the window and get focused. What's great about this is this limits visual distractions, restricts uninvited visitors, and reduces auditory distractions (I will usually wear headphones and listen to non-lyric music).

Often I find that I will get more work done in this period of time than I would if I was sitting at my desk.
