brookside··on How Emotional Labor is Dragging Down Gender Equality
I'm not in love with the phrase "emotional labor" but I would suspect if you reflect more deeply you will see the scenarios in this article playing out in your own and others' relationships.

It's not really about standards, more the fact that it's not fair to women when the default assumption is they are in mental charge of household and child-rearing duties - certainly when both partners are working.

I'll share a comic others in the thread have I had enjoyed before: https://english.emmaclit.com/2017/05/20/you-shouldve-asked/

brookside··on Yes, We Get Wiser with Age
I am more and more in the HN camp with those viewing the bulk of social science as...not good science.

> We have been doing a study of about 2000 people from age 21 to 100-plus. We look at their physical health, cognitive function, and psychosocial functioning. What we find is that physical health declines after middle age, which is not a surprise. Cognitive function starts to decline in older age, not a surprise. But psycho-social functioning, including wellness, quality of life, and happiness progressively improve with age. Older people handle stresses better than someone in their 20s and 30s. When you’re young and something goes wrong you might be crushed. When you’re old, and something goes wrong, you say, “That’s okay. There are other things that will go right.”

This is the unroasted scientific nut in an article written with an overwhelmingly authoritative tone. It sounds like the researchers have an online form or sent out a survey. To whom? With what specific questions? Or maybe they are asking in person and older people are more reticent to reveal to a stranger that they are lonely or unhappy. Does "We have been doing a study" mean it is still in progress, and if so, why are they reporting the results already? The answer of course is that an article like this helps justify the grant money / salaries for the UCSD Center for Healthy Aging.

> When you’re young and something goes wrong you might be crushed. When you’re old, and something goes wrong, you say, “That’s okay. There are other things that will go right.”

This bit is massive, massive blanket statement to extract from whatever survey they are conducting. Both the young and old can be equanimous.

Looking at my own grandmother's current life- almost every one of her friends is dead and she has the more limited mobility and health problems people in their 80s often have. She definitely tries to act as cheerful as possible around us, but I know she gets sad. Because having everybody who really understands you and shared common experiences with you be dead is sad. No longer being able to ride a bike or have the health to travel is sad. Its de-humanizing to think that older people somehow don't feel the emotional pain of these experiences.

> The currently understood source of ADHD is a mis-wiring of the brain.

Is that actually understood, though? We had the heavily promoted social consensus for a long while that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance, which is now seen as a somewhat disproven theory that never had much evidence.

brookside··on Rolling Stone, Once a Counterculture Bible, Will Be Put Up for Sale
He struck me as prickly and on edge for portions of that interview.

While the question about lack of gender diversity in RS's writers seemed aggressive compared to the normal How I Built This "So a billion dollar valuation. That's a lot of money. What does it feel like to be...rich?", Wenner's response seemed out of touch and dismissive.

> You can understand and follow someone's logic without necessarily agreeing with it.

Religion isn't logic- it is indoctrinated superstition. There are no reasons to understand. Faith is undebatable.

Certainly being combative won't win anybody over, we all know that.

But there is no real understanding to be gained debating with someone who has derived their position from an ancient text they believe to be sacred. I don't care if their interpretation is "reasonable" or not...I just don't see how their divining rod should be entering public debate.

brookside··on Human skin cells transformed directly into motor neurons
I would counter that interpreting religious texts as an overall activity is not a reasonable one.

It is good an reasonable to show people respect but the same isn't owed to beliefs. Mysticism has an undue influence worldwide on the legality of all sorts of things beyond stem cell research. We shouldn't be afraid to call out, or even laugh at this kind of superstition.

brookside··on Coding Boot Camps Get the Boot: Why the Industry Is Shutting Down
Bootcamps rode a wave of phenomenal publicity at their inception. Articles in the NYTimes and the like made me aware of Flatiron / General Assembly as alternatives to grad school, which I had just enrolled in at the time.

These "Bootcamps Are Dead" stories will to some degree be self-fulfilling. Regardless of any realities in the junior dev job market, exposure to this wave of (sinking?) submarining would give me great pause were I making the same school decision today.

brookside··on Bringing back the iPhone headphone jack, in China
Bluetooth audio is typically loss-ily re-encoded due to limited bandwidth and has sounded really bad in the implementations I've tried (an iPhone connected to earbuds and a Toyota Prius).

I've had a hard time finding out technical details of Apple's new w1 chips - what increased bandwidth they support, if any. This one case where Apple hiding the tech specs from consumers is pretty irritating.

I'm no audiophile pushing for nonsense like 24/192 downloads, but I do care about music enough to actively avoid overly-compressed audio via bluetooth or Sirius/XM as the sound is grating.

I'm thinking Bluetooth 5.0 will solve this quality issue, but I'm certain there is somebody with actual domain knowledge in this thread to enlighten.

Edit: link to some reference on bluetooth quality http://www.sereneaudio.com/blog/how-good-is-bluetooth-audio-...

Am I missing where somebody in this thread was advocating for violence?
brookside··on At liberal tech companies, those who disagree on politics say they’re isolated
Throwing fists is violence, not anger.
brookside··on At liberal tech companies, those who disagree on politics say they’re isolated
That anger could be reasonable or not, depending on your opinions.
brookside··on Terry Pratchett's unfinished novels destroyed by steamroller
The world could be a lot more fine though - we as a global society are largely still with in the age of superstition.

Would have been great to possibly break out of that before our lifetimes, and I'd guess writing could have played a big part in that.

brookside··on FDA grants Breakthrough Therapy designation to MDMA for treatment of PTSD
Some (not all) of these attitudes were religion-based.

A reason I don't respect people's faith (superstition) because legitimized magical thinking still has an outsized effect on elections, laws, and policy, with many examples during our lifetimes.

brookside··on To Survive in Tough Times, Restaurants Turn to Data-Mining
A restaurant can have their rent doubled or tripled in a market like NYC, making profit for almost any food business impossible.

Lots of beloved spots have closed down here and have been replaced with condos and drug stores.

Even aside from this, and as others have pointed out - restaurants operate on razor thin margins. A large confluence of variables, some more controllable than others, need to come together in just the right way for a restaurant to have a chance of succeeding.

brookside··on New and improved bike routing, with low stress options
As a cyclist another large issue I have with google maps is a suggested route's overlay having no transparency, so it's not possible to tell which parts of the route are indeed safer bike lanes and not just riding in traffic.

I find myself constantly getting directions, then cancelling the navigation so I can once again see indicated bike lanes and adjust accordingly. A slight opacity on the route indicator would be a godsend.

brookside··on Benefits of a Lifestyle Business
I love backpacking but it seems fundamentally incompatible to tour by bike and work simultaneously - as the pleasure of traveling slowly means there isn't time to fit both any significant distance and work time within the same day.

Planning to work remotely laster this year and will definitely pick a spot and stay parked there for weeks.

A great read on how to capitalize on the upcoming crash! The Sale of a Lifetime: How the Great Bubble Burst of 2017-2019 Can Make You Rich[1]

Also good is the author's earlier book The Great Crash Ahead [2] "outlining why the next financial crash and crisis is inevitable, and just around the corner— coming between mid-2012 and early 2015"

brookside··on Airbnb dominated by professional landlords
As a New Yorker who has recently considered buying an apartment in Queens, short-term rental prohibition isn't a law I want.

A NYC apartment would be my biggest financial commitment, and not having help with the mortgage from a subleter when I elect to travel at any point over the next 30 years is a crippling constraint.

brookside··on Ask HN: If you were a coder who successfully changed careers, what do you do now?
Can I ask why do living costs increase with years? I believe the general trend is people having less expenses after they retire.

The calculation in the link takes into account inflation, so that (massive) aspect of increased expenses is included in the prediction.

Edit - If indeed you are planning to increase your living expenses after retiring (bigger living quarters, more expensive travel, etc) that would certainly lengthen the amount of time of work needed to achieve financial independence.

brookside··on Ask HN: If you were a coder who successfully changed careers, what do you do now?
I'm no financial independence role mode. Generally I do try to keep my expenses down for the big items (no car, shared housing). Easy enough to save that way.
brookside··on Ask HN: If you were a coder who successfully changed careers, what do you do now?
This isn't a direct answer to the question, but if you are coding professionally (in the USA at least) it shouldn't be necessary to work for 3 decades. If you think you will burn out, optimize your life for getting off the treadmill early.

I believe there are pre-reqs for nursing school (including biology and chemistry) before one could enter an accelerated program. I realize most people on this board already have those.
