brookside··on Ask HN: How do you justify taking unpaid vacation as self employed?
> I don't won't to refuse any projects to miss on money I can't imagine taking vacation, because I'm not gonna lose only vacation expenses, but also similar amount in lost income for every day I would not work.

Sounds like you are being consumed by greed and fear.

brookside··on What I have learned from my suicidal patients
"We excluded trials that included 20% or more of participants with bipolar disorder, psychotic depression, or treatment-resistant depression"

This is an honest question - is it fair to exclude people for whom antidepressants don't work in an analysis of if antidepressants work?

brookside··on What I have learned from my suicidal patients
The term "treatment resistant depression" bothers me because, I think, a more accurate name would be "placebo resistant depression". Sorry to come off as frustrated; I'm like others in this thread with 10+ years of trying various therapies and antidepressants to end up feeling more, not less, hopeless.

David Burns does a good job explaining why antidepressants and psychotherapy don't typically work in his most recent podcast: https://feelinggood.com/2019/11/18/167-feeling-great-profess...

While David makes a good case against drugs and non-CBT therapy, I actually don't find his his fantastical anecdotes of the light-switch effectiveness of TEAM CBT therapy convincing either.

Non-fresh-squeezed orange juice is, universally, artificially flavored: https://gizmodo.com/dirty-little-secret-orange-juice-is-arti...

I don't agree with your assessment that fresh squeezed orange juice is watery though - its usually not. The china vending machine must not have had good oranges.

Journalism is valuable, and it is a publication's decision to decide on how to pay for that journalistic work.

I'm not ok with copying and pasting paywalled news articles verbatim on HN.

brookside··on A Forty Year Career
Yes actually, my mistake.
brookside··on A Forty Year Career
> how much money will that specifically require?

A general rule of many in the "financial independence" is 20x annual expenses saved for a sustained life without work.

brookside··on Show HN: Free Service to Find a Therapist
Not to sound too frustrated here, but these CBT techniques are now 40 years old. So hoping the profession slowly comes around seems too mild of a take for me.

Interested in the cycling part of this. Any routes you recommend?

I did the short Shimanami Kaido over the inland sea which was, of course, wonderful.

brookside··on Show HN: Free Service to Find a Therapist
In my experience, bad.

For me, it seems crazy in the year 2020 that a therapist wouldn't introduce basic analytics into the process with something like a brief mood survey after each session to know if therapy is ...for lack of a better term..."working".

Zero therapists I've found via the NYC therapist-finder sites do this.

https://feelinggood.com/tag/evaluation-of-therapy/

brookside··on Show HN: Free Service to Find a Therapist
There are similar services/startups in NYC i've interacted with.

My experience was it is fruitless endeavor trying to find a therapist that actually practices CBT for less than 200/hr.

I will fully admit to having no inside knowledge, or any concrete beliefs about the subject, really! I only have read a few blog posts which seemed reasonable enough. Such as:

brookside··on Why Nadal is unbeatable on clay
There is also quite a bit of incredulity that both Nadal and Federer are performing as they do without performance enhancing drugs.

Nadal’s one-time doctor was nabbed, but his blood bags were ordered destroyed by Spanish court:

brookside··on Ask HN: How do I explain “startup went bankrupt” to family and future employer?
Also I'm not even sure how this can be a real question.

Anybody who has the slightest understanding of startups knows the majority of them cease to exist within a few years of founding. There is no complex explanation needed beyond "the startup I was at closed its doors".

Nascar, to me, is a celebration of pointless CO2 emissions.

It is literally people driving around in a circle in last-century technology, mainly as an advertising platform for selling inefficient non-race vehicles.

We can do better in 2019, and I'd personally be ok if the whole sport shuttered, not just one team.

ADHD is a label, not a disease.

You can't really be diagnosed with symptom (although of course your money will be cheerfully taken to do just this).

Attention and focus and other related ADHD-type issues are bell curve.

It can feel good, for sure, to externalize our weakness and failings into one of these labels, like ADD. If that is helpful to get over the psychic weight of past failures, then that is helpful and useful.

Taking stimulants definitely helps most people with ability to work and focus, regardless of where they are on the attention-ability curve. There are also drawbacks and side-effects, at least I have observed.

I don’t think many would deny churches provide their members community. Reinforcement of social ties with weekly meetings is strong.

This isn’t a good reason to permit superstition to remain at the center of community life. We can find something better.

brookside··on Claims of Shoddy Production Draw Scrutiny to a Second Boeing Jet
Boeing South Carolina teammates are producing the highest levels of quality in our history,” Kevin McAllister, Boeing’s head of commercial airplanes, said in a statement. “I am proud of our teams’ exceptional commitment to quality and stand behind the work they do each and every day.

Whoever is sitting down to write Boeing's PR response quotes needs to be fired, along with whichever c-suite exec is approving them. It's not acceptable to totally ignore actual safely issues being brought to light and respond universally with panglossian emptiness.

The quote about not needing to ground the Max, before being ordered to do so, was especially egregious.
