brokebroadbeat··on We’re opening up access to Gov.uk forms
Thanks so much for this! I’m the design system lead and this has made the team very happy.
brokebroadbeat··on Show HN: We built a developer-first open-source Zapier alternative
‘Developer-first Zapier alternative’ is an odd positioning, I think the point of Zapier is that it’s for non-developers mainly. Looking at the comments, though, it seems like there’s a need for something like this. Keen to see how you iterate and improve your positioning. Good luck!
brokebroadbeat··on The Safari bug that never was (2022)
It looks less if you compare salary to salary, but factoring in the civil service pension means GDS staffers probably get paid more
brokebroadbeat··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
Actually a 2020 purchase but it keeps paying dividends: Pax 3 vaporiser.
brokebroadbeat··on Start a fucking blog
Despite the condescending tone, I think you’re probably right about what people want. Medium focused too much on style and making publishing easy, but it’s the discovery aspect people will appreciate.

The TikTok algorithm but for RSS would be a winner.

brokebroadbeat··on Encouraging the NHS to build a small web service
Looks like the Platforms team at NHS Digital own it? https://digital.nhs.uk/blog/tech-talk/2020/5-key-themes-for-...
brokebroadbeat··on A Survey of Programmers' Cannabis Usage, Perception, and Motivation
manager here, but weed helps me unwind and destress after a busy week or day, think i'd jeopardise that work/life balance by ripping shotties during work hours
brokebroadbeat··on Ask HN: Frameworks for thinking through your thoughts and feelings?
Psychedelic therapy, unless done right, would create more thoughts and narrow the aperture of any framework or safety net. It seems like a nuclear option in this context (but I’m interested in being corrected on that).
brokebroadbeat··on No-bullshit tenets for faster decision-making
That link to coordination models is good. Wish I had that when writing https://visitmy.website/2020/11/06/users-trust-delivery/
brokebroadbeat··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2020?
_Steal as much as you can_ by Nathalie Olah. It helped me consider what social mobility really is, as a person from a working-class background.
brokebroadbeat··on Ask HN: What's the best paper you've read in 2020?
Making Kin with the Machines, https://jods.mitpress.mit.edu/pub/lewis-arista-pechawis-kite...

'What if we treated AI as equals, like other human beings, not as tools or, worse, slaves to their creators?' That's the premise to this paper, which is a wonderful provocation. It's a really important consideration too, when you consider how many of our decisions we're asking machine sentience to make for us. If algorithmic bias were a human judge, they'd be thrown out of court (you'd hope).

brokebroadbeat··on Making Kin with the Machines
I love this piece. It combines speculative futures with indigenous ontologies and epistemologies. It's both now and then – which is the point.
brokebroadbeat··on Is it morally wrong to write inefficient code?
Is there only ever one answer to a headline that is a question?
brokebroadbeat··on Study: Focus will shape the future of distributed work
I think a lot of this holds true. Our team experimented with what would happen if we stopped having meetings and sending emails, a hard shift into asynchronous working. It was really useful for helping us find the middle ground, what worked well, rather than stringently requiring everyone to work that way for ever. For example, we found that having meeting-free days really helped people focus on important tasks, getting more done.
brokebroadbeat··on Ask HN: How to effectively get feedback from users?
Yeah, right!

brokebroadbeat··on This Website Is Killing the Planet
According to Website Carbon Calculator:

> The internet consumes a lot of electricity. 416.2TWh per year to be precise. To give you some perspective, that’s more than the entire United Kingdom.

I'm not sure if that is the infrastructure of the internet plus the data-weight of the web...

brokebroadbeat··on This Website Is Killing the Planet
That's so cool!
brokebroadbeat··on This Website Is Killing the Planet
Run a web page performance test and see where the bulk of your page weight is. Usually it’s images and JavaScript. Then try to reduce those sizes and you’ll see some improvements.
brokebroadbeat··on This Website Is Killing the Planet
Nice! Did you plant the tree yourself or use a service?
brokebroadbeat··on This Website Is Killing the Planet
Yes, to have any effect, it seems sensible to enact both carbon-reduction and tree-planting strategies to balance out one's overall impact over time.
