brohoolio··on A glut has used-car depreciation accelerating
Cash for clunkers pulled lots of used cars off the market but my understanding is plummeting manufacturing of new cars after the financial crisis was responsible for a much higher percentage of the gain.

Cash for clunkers pulled like 700k out of the market.

The auto industry was making millions less cars and trucks per year from 2008-2012.

brohoolio··on Impossible Foods has raised $75M for its plant-based burgers
I guess I'm used to my friends picking out more affordable options. I might spend extra occasionally because my wife is a vegetarian but I can't see any of my friends selecting it at this price, even at $8 a pound.
brohoolio··on Impossible Foods has raised $75M for its plant-based burgers
I'm in the Midwest. Hamburger meat is like $2 a pound. Fancy salmon / tuna $10-$15 a pound.
brohoolio··on Impossible Foods has raised $75M for its plant-based burgers
I've tried it. It's good.

At $16 a pound I'd much rather get some high quality meat or fish. If it comes down in price to something reasonable I might add it to our rotation.

brohoolio··on Jeff Sessions Announces Justice Department Will Increase Asset Forfeiture
If you are interested in statistics about the success of treatment programs you can google it and do the research. It's important to think about addiction as a disease and treat it as such. It spreads like a disease and it inflicts damage across society like a disease. It's killing 60,000 people a year.

I will say that I can see the damage here in the Detroit region from another untreated addiction epidemic, the crack crisis from the 80s. So much of the regions ills come from treating it as a criminal justice problem instead of a health crisis. A generation was lost to either the drugs themselves or the war on drugs.

Sometimes those anecdotes are actually pretty revealing.
brohoolio··on Acetaminophen reduces empathy for pain (2016)
Did the dosage cause a permanent shift in your behavior?
brohoolio··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
Sports often generate enough revenue to cover the costs for the top tier schools. Top ranked universities use sports to build donations from alumni, brand awareness, etc.

If you want to tackle a good portion of the high cost of higher education tackle medical costs. It influences the cost of everything in the US. If you earn $50,000 a year the university is paying another $10,000 - 20,000 for insurance.

brohoolio··on Where Anti-Tax Fervor Means ‘All Services Will Cease’
My local government is really transparent about the budget, where it's going. They've been running really lean since the great recession. It's really interesting to see how they spend money. There are couple programs I question, but for the most part they do an excellent job. I will say sometimes a few years after these programs are implemented I'm generally a fan.

I understand the drive to make government more efficient, run better, but I'm not sure if that's the goal of the current conservative movement. At least here in Michigan the state government under republican control has caused all sorts of issues, like the Flint water crisis.

brohoolio··on Where Anti-Tax Fervor Means ‘All Services Will Cease’
In rural areas this seems like it will kill jobs and make the area less desirable.

There always is a balance to strike, not providing too many services at too high a cost, but killing off a library? Not being able to have police?

How is someone supposed to apply for a job if they don't have internet? How are they supposed to pull themselves up by their bootstraps? The library provides ways for people to get ahead.

brohoolio··on Discounted Cars Benefit Buyers, but May Spell Trouble for Industry
There was a real slowdown in car sales during the Great Recession. That shortage and the ripple effects are finally coming to an end.

Manufacturers are cranking out too many cars for the US market.

brohoolio··on Warren Buffett says health care costs are a bigger problem than corporate taxes
Healthcare costs create huge problems across the economy, increasing the cost of everything from manufacturing to higher education.

Between myself and my employer, it costs about $20,000 to insure my family a year. My employer shares much of the cost breakdown and it's interesting how goes to prescriptions and how much of that goes to specialty drugs to keep a handful of people alive.

$500 million dollar spend on healthcare.

$120 million goes to prescriptions.

$40 million of that went to specialty drugs, representing 1.7% of the prescriptions.

"The average ingredient cost of a single-source brand prescription increased by 14.9% in 2016 to an average $745 per prescription, mainly driven by high-cost specialty drugs. The average ingredient cost of multiple-source brand prescription increased by 49.5% to an average $585 per prescription. The average ingredient cost for a generic prescription decreased by 10.9% to an average cost of $34.04 per prescription. "

brohoolio··on Penguicon has lost its way
You need a code of conduct when you have 2000 people drinking in a hotel, having parties etc. Someone is going to be an asshole and having policy ahead of time means you don't need to think of a solution on the spot. It's a fair system.

Read it here. It's pretty low key for a code of conduct.

My example is from the harassment section.

brohoolio··on Penguicon has lost its way
I should say we all said fuck these guys because of the amount of effort goes into running a convention and dealing with folks who are just never going to be satisfied.

If they'd volunteer and put the time in to organize I'd probably take them more seriously.

brohoolio··on Penguicon has lost its way
One of Tron guy's complaints about penguicon was the code of conduct. If you read the code you'll see it's very reasonable. It asks folks to respect each other and if there is a disagreement talk it out. If it can't be resolved escalate. If you commit harassment the con reserves the right to kick you out.

Seems reasonable. You might think you can go back to the old days without a code of conduct but with 2000 people attending there will be issues. It's best to have everything documented and rules in case something goes wrong. That's why a convention like penguicon keeps going after 15 years.

My friends both liberal and conservative enjoyed the con this year. Both sides also said fuck these guys, if they can't have a good time at a great convention which features all sorts of perspectives, then maybe they can't enjoy themselves anywhere outside of their social bubble.

brohoolio··on Tesla Passes Ford by Market Value
Ford's F-150 truck line is a fortune 50 company by itself. Two factories. It's kind of insane.
brohoolio··on Young men are dropping out of the job market to spend their time gaming
Where does this happen? Where does 1/3 of the population get full governmental assistance?

Are you including retirees, who paid into the system?

brohoolio··on Google App Maker
I requested access a few months ago... still don't have it.

We are looking at a number of these rapid development tools. Hopefully google opens it up soon before we select a different one.

I'd be curious if this platform has sticking power. Google rolls these sorts of offerings out from time to time and then shuts them down. If I knew there was a couple years of runway for this offering my fears would go away.

brohoolio··on Movie Business Scrambles to Adapt to Changing Consumer Demand
What's with the comic book movie hate? Most of the Marvel ones are pretty good.

I'd say the one exception is the soundtracks. Movies used to have memorable soundtracks. Nowadays the soundtracks are pretty boring. They use a process of filming using another movies soundtrack nowadays and then going back and recording a soundtrack afterwards. It makes movies sound the same. It's cheaper to make but it makes the movie going experience cheaper too. It reduces one of the best parts of going to the theater, the sound system.

I'm pretty sure that Marvel used the soundtrack to Mad Max for the filming Winter Soldier and then went out and recorded for the winter soldier.

brohoolio··on The House just voted to wipe out the FCC’s landmark Internet privacy protections
It's actually a GOP strategy to paint all of government incompetent and that both sides are terrible. You get less participation.
brohoolio··on How Subtle Class Cues Can Backfire on a Resume (2016)
I think the differences between gender are fascinating.

Upper class women are not selected for interviews because there is a perception that they won't be as committed, implying they might get married and stay home with the kids.

brohoolio··on Suicides in Rural America Increased More Than 40% in 16 Years

And here in the United States we are talking about removing drug treatment options from our health care. Over a million people.
brohoolio··on As obesity keeps rising, more Americans are just giving up

brohoolio··on Tyson Foods CEO: The Future of Food Might Be Meatless
Interesting to see if the company actually shifts it's culture.

My wife is vegetarian so I'm exposed to quite a bit of different sources of veggie protein. My concern is that the fake meat stuff is actually kind of expensive compared to meat. If it was cheaper I can see more folks move in that direction.

Reminds me of the book Tally's Corner. The lack of consistent work caused all sorts of interesting outcomes for society.
brohoolio··on PayPal Redirects Charitable Contributions Without Consent, Lawsuit Says
That probably explains why the amazon smile program included a local charity that caught me by surprise. I didn't think the local office would be technically savvy to sign up for a special amazon program.
brohoolio··on White House proposes steep budget cut to NOAA
The cuts are gonna kill a ton of jobs. Blue collar ones too. And some of the US competitive advantage.

Science has been driving our economy for years.

They are also proposing cutting funding for clean water in the Great Lakes region 97%. Largest source of fresh water in the world and we are gonna cut almost all of the funding?
