brm··on Jerry's Map
Can't feed Jerry to the ai though
brm··on Airlines are charging solo passengers higher fares than groups
Or, a society will just start having children again once the population gets small enough that having children becomes a more optimal decision or the supply of things that make having children optimal is increased...
brm··on Veo 3 and Imagen 4, and a new tool for filmmaking called Flow
I think it's a good thing to have more people creating things. I also think it's a good thing to have to do some work and some thinking and planning to produce a work.
brm··on Math Academy pulled me out of the Valley of Despair
Mount Stupidity relates to section two of the blog post where it references a concept related to the Dunning-Kruger effect.
brm··on Let me GPT that for you
I really try hard not to be down on stuff like this, to let it pass uncommented, but the mere creation of this site is evidence that creator missed the point of the original that they derived it from.
brm··on Basketball Is a Solved Sport
Knowing what to do in a situation and being able to do it in a situation are two different things.
brm··on A Return to Polymathy (2015) [pdf]
They don't have to actively cultivate it but they should remove the walls between it. There's a lot of red tape/administrative confusion at most schools if you want to do anything interdisciplinary, especially if you want to cross more than two disciplines. Institutions should be more like buffets for the polymath. If I want to interlink say landscape architecture, sculpture, acoustics, materials science and biology I shouldn't need more than one signoff much less the 5 it would probably take to do work in something like that at most universities.
brm··on Building My Resume in HTML Using Eleventy
they asked how to do it, not if it was good to do it.
brm··on Building My Resume in HTML Using Eleventy
Inline style or <font>
brm··on Show HN: A minimalist (brutalist?) website for sharing all your links
Brilliant that help you've offered is SEO spam. If that's not the Internet in a nutshell I don't know what it is. Good show.
brm··on Portugal seeks to become low-tax haven for young people
I mean you've also accurately described Pennsylvania...
brm··on Hackers can use credit bureaus to dox nearly anyone in America
I can use a couple free searches to dox nearly anyone in America...
brm··on Tech Nation shutting down as UK government pulls key funding
Never seen anything like it really. Over a £12mm handout they chopped the head off one of the most important visa endorsing bodies with no real plan to replace it. I'm sure they'll scramble to find one but the absolute madness of it absolutely reflects the entirety of what's going on in UK government at the moment.
brm··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
Php/MySQL/html/css still the easiest simplest way to get anything out the front door
brm··on 2023 Global Passport Ranking
In the interest of moving the Overton window, I've yet to hear a good, logical reason why we don't allow the free movement of people between administrative states.
brm··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
Prior to 2015, Twitter was the pre-child view source generation tweeting interesting articles and what they ate for lunch.
brm··on If I could bring one thing back to the internet it would be blogs (2020)
I'd bring back David Karp
brm··on Show HN: Alias – Google Alerts for your favorite people
You know how everyone shouts learn to code? To coders/founders I say learn to design. Or give more of your equity than you think you should to a designer. The nice thing about design is its pretty easy to see examples and references and most designers would actually be happy to work at a start up from the beginning as part of the founding team, its just that in a lot of the tech world designers aren't viewed as integral until after the fact and really the track record of design-led startups and your reaction to ones that are polished out of the gate should indicate otherwise. Contrary to what OP said /u/iMuzz isn't really even a unicorn designer, there's plenty just like them, you've just got to decide its important and find a way to invest time, money, or effort.
brm··on The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday
Everyone always writes these and yet I've seen very few ever talk about how to decide what's worth showing up for or how to get a working hypothesis of an animating principle for your own existence. It'd be remarkably useful to have a working framework for how to figure out what to want, especially targeted at smart people with top level talents in several areas.
brm··on Louvre makes its entire collection available online
I think you answered your own question.
brm··on Barbados introduces plan to allow visitors to work remotely there for a year
If you design and sell tshirts globally on the internet or freelance copy edit for clients in and out of country or exhibit and sell your art internationally these are all sorts of things that are not in competition with local employment but currently have limited movement and residency options. They're not pure examples but I think they work for what people are typically concerned with when it comes to immigration and residency.
brm··on Barbados introduces plan to allow visitors to work remotely there for a year
This shouldn't just be for the remotely employed. We need to do more decouple freedom of movement from employment by a company.

Perhaps there should be something like this: An International Creative or Digital Visa that countries can sign onto.

This proposal is a good start for what it should be: http://artsvisa.org/ireland/

Have something to contribute. Be able to support yourself. Don't compete for an in country job and any country should welcome your residence/citizenship.

There's no reason something like this doesn't exist in a global digital age.

brm··on Dashboard for tracking insider trading at S&P 500 companies
Side question, anyone know the easiest way to lookup how many shares an individual insider currently holds? Do I need to go through the most recent 10k/q or is there somewhere else I should be looking?
brm··on Orthodox Privilege
That is not a list that provides examples of truths being cancelled.
brm··on Orthodox Privilege
I can't think of a TRUE statement that you'll be cancelled for. I can think of a lot of opinions presented as truths that will get you cancelled. For my edification, can you all please present some hypothetical examples of current TRUE statements that cannot/should not be said?

Something like "Fat people are a burden on a healthcare system" is true and won't get you cancelled.

Something like "Trans people are currently the gender they were born" is a philosophical opinion and might get you cancelled but whether its true or not is a sort of Ship of Theseus problem.

Something like "Donald Trump has a low IQ" may impede your work progress but that has its own implications about cancel culture that aren't what we're talking about.

So please for the sake of argument, show me an actual truth that will get you cancelled. Seriously looking for examples...

brm··on My family saw a police car hit a kid, then I learned how NYPD impunity works
If being black caused police cars to steer towards my car when in their vicinity I'd find that perilous.
brm··on California turns to vote-by-mail to keep residents safe come November
Please elaborate on how the fraud would work in this case...
brm··on In 4 US state prisons, 3,300 inmates test positive, 96% without symptoms
Only until the point that they don't. Unfortunately that requires a lot more people to have had covid...
brm··on Restarting America means people will die – five thinkers weigh moral choices
1 test per person every two weeks with more frequency for healthcare workers etc.. https://paulromer.net/covid-sim-part2/
brm··on Restarting America means people will die – five thinkers weigh moral choices
We need 20 to 30 million tests a day to "restart" America. We can produce at that level, but we're not. We can debate the moral choices once someone in charge shows some competence. Until then it's basically insanity to have a defined solution and not attempt it. We're in a hole and debating throwing other people into holes instead of mass producing ladders.
