briantmaurer··on Twitter’s User Growth Goes Nowhere as It Meets Revenue Expectations of $710M
If there are two companies A and B, and you are convinced that A will yield a better ROI than B, you will sell B and buy A – even if there is room for B to yield a positive ROI.

Growth in users/usage/engagement in a social network almost always yields a better ROI than no/low/negative growth in users/usage/engagement.

Twitter does not necessarily have a monetization problem, people just want to invest their money where there is more potential.

briantmaurer··on The new YC: As it tries to scale from 200 to 2,000 companies
The important part of exclusivity is not in number, but in quality.
briantmaurer··on Maximum Wage
Even though I mostly disagree with the author, I enjoy reading the detailed alternative perspective. It helps me gain a deeper understanding of how different individuals think about income inequality.
briantmaurer··on MIT dean to start new university: “No majors, no lectures, no classrooms”
Grammar (in English) is a tiny subset of human knowledge. Being bad at just one thing hardly makes you dumb. However, consistent grammatical errors during a speech will definitely project the appearance of stupidity...
briantmaurer··on The New York Times Introduces a Web Site (1996)
wow, surprisingly consistent layout!
briantmaurer··on The New York Times Introduces a Web Site (1996)
I would love to see the complete evolution of the home page.
briantmaurer··on Show HN: A friend and I made a beautiful pastebin
Looks nice – but it is not 'private'.

Using only 6 characters as a 'private' URL is too small. How long does it take to have a bot that can make 1000 requests per second to download every single URL in your URL space?

((alphabet_size^number_url_characters)/(request_speed))/secs/mins/hrs = time_in_days

((26^6)/(1000))/60/60/24 = 3.6 days

Reading every single paste in 3.6 days is not private.

You want to reduce the probability of a single URL guess colliding with an existing 'private' URL so that it would take years for a bot to have a decent chance of finding a URL that is already in use.

Read up on the probability of hashing collisions and how fast bots can make requests. Make sure it takes a long time to make enough guesses to have a chance at collision.

If you don't want to do math, just use as many characters as an established company that already has 'private URL sharing'. ex Dropbox, I think they use ~40 case-sensitive-alphanumeric-characters or something.

briantmaurer··on Show HN: I made this today with ReactJS, any suggestions ?
This reminds me of some of the early websites I built. I always enjoy looking at early personal creations.

Tips:

• To prevent "button dancing" on hover add an invisible border to the buttons when you are not hovering –> border: 1px solid rgba(0,0,0,0);

• Keep building more!

briantmaurer··on My wife found my email in the Ashley Madison database
Credit card numbers are often stolen and therefore are not a good singular piece of evidence.
briantmaurer··on Your name is fine
The irony here is that I agree with down votes on my parent comment, unfortunately that does not mean it is false.
briantmaurer··on Your name is fine
In recent news, many HN users avoid up-voting/commenting on things that disagree with pg/sama/etc. in the chance that their likelihood of getting into YC will be hindered.
briantmaurer··on Ask HN: What is wrong with my resume and portfoilo?
Maybe, start here: http://www.slideshare.net/perlcareers/how-to-write-a-develop...

Also, there are probably more good posts on resume writing here: https://hn.algolia.com/?query=resume&sort=byPopularity&prefi...

briantmaurer··on On Full-Stack Startups
I enjoy ideas. Here are the ones from the tweet storm:

• Full stack law firm: template all contracts, law APIs as core, hyperdeflate legal costs.

• Full stack clinic: mobile EMR/EHR, qself, genomics, telemed. Employ MDs w/ tech skills. Accept insurance, prefer cash subscriptions.

• Full stack architect: put @vannevartech APIs at core of new construction co. Start with unmanned buildings like datacenters to derisk. Ultimate goal = hit enter to build a building w/ drones + prefab.

• Full stack accounting firm: Given bank account, auto prepare it all: tax to diligence to S-1 w/ legal sign off. (@xero could do this).

• Full stack restaurant: Mobile order/pay/reserve, A/B tested dynamic menus w/ supply chain integration, robot prep.

briantmaurer··on Programmers Need to Learn Statistics or I Will Kill Them All
I have talked to a number of people in the University of Washington's graduate program for statistics (typically rated #1/#2 in the world) and the consensus is that people almost always overestimate how well they understand statistics.
briantmaurer··on Human Nature Prepares for a Momentous Leap (1974)
Does anyone else feel like this "leap" is somewhere in the middle of its transition?
briantmaurer··on Quora's new logo
Does the baseline on this logo look messy to anyone else? Especially under the u and o.
briantmaurer··on How Tesla Will Change the World
Excellent article covering climate, energy, and electric vehicles in detail – 25K words worth of detail :D
briantmaurer··on Apple warns AltConf: Do not show the WWDC keynote stream in your Viewing Room
Also, Apple gets a better idea of how many people are watching the live stream if there are fewer multi-viewer streams.
briantmaurer··on White House Sides with Oracle, Tells Supreme Court APIs Are Copyrightable
Programming is in this odd position somewhere between the structure of math and the creativity of writing. Some things feel as obvious as basic addition, which clearly should not be copyrightable, while other things feel as clever as complex poems, which clearly should be copyrightable.

I am not a copyright expert, but in my opinion APIs usually fall closer to the structured math half of programming.

ex. GET, POST, PUT, or DELETE to the following:

/users

/messages

/comments

/logout

/signup

/payments

etc.

Who gets those copyrights?

briantmaurer··on Improve your touch typing
I agree, it took me a while to get somewhat used to fake words.

Conveniently, in the settings there is a way to set a source. Recently I have been using articles (via url) as the source ~2 times a week. This has helped me improve speed and accuracy (there were a handful of real words which I consistently mis-typed) without fake word headaches!

briantmaurer··on Improve your touch typing
I have used Keybr for only a few hours and have already seen a big improvement in my wpm (compared to other touch typing resources I have tried).

The key feature is that it targets your weak keys and key combinations and forces you to practice those repeatedly.

briantmaurer··on The Best and Worst Places to Grow Up in the U.S.
Two thing in this article are unclear:

1. Top X% of what? The top 1% of earners in the community? The nation?

2. Does income data for a "child" reflect back on all the locations they previously lived or does it reflect solely on the county they currently live in? e.x. If I am a child who moved many times, and at age 26 live in a place where I did not grow up, which locations' income differences are affected by my income?

briantmaurer··on YC S15 Interview Invites Today
I wonder if there is any correlation between how much people care about their idea, ending up on this thread, and their likelihood of getting an interview.
briantmaurer··on Apple Watch Keynote Live Streaming
Medical data is significantly more sensitive. Financial data says almost nothing about you other than what money you make and how you like to spend it.

Medical data discloses your sex, drinking, smoking, drug, and physical habits, along with any mental issues, genetic pre-dispositions, where you live, who your family are, where you have worked, etc. With only a little inference you can get financial information from a person's medical records.

TLDR;

• Financial records are designed to track accurate exchanges of money.

• Medical records are designed to keep an accurate representation of you. The goal is explicitly more personal.
