brianjlogan··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
The first comment I see saying this. What about the percentage of people who actually own their home? Who can afford a "party"? It does mention dual income but how correlated is this change with the decoupling of economic productivity gains with worker wealth and income?
brianjlogan··on What Is a Syslog Server?
Why have the additional hop? You can send Syslog to an Otel collector.
brianjlogan··on What Is a Syslog Server?
There's far cheaper alternatives to Splunk that are still a step up from traditional syslog.

KubeCon over the last couple of years was showing the market was a glut with Observability vendors which is just time series and log management. (traces are logs with a span id).

brianjlogan··on What Is a Syslog Server?
> A syslog server is a foundational tool for centralized log management in modern IT environments

I'd very much recommend a more modern log stack than a traditional syslog server.

There are many articles covering the limitations of Syslog. Better to replace that component by utilities like OpenTelemetry and JSON structured logging.

You can run a single binary version of Loki https://grafana.com/docs/loki/latest/get-started/deployment-...

Or use something like the Otel collector to send your logs to a remote host.

I have done my fair share of rsyslog and syslog-ng.

I would not say a "Syslog" server belongs in a modern stack.

brianjlogan··on Airplane Boneyards List and Map
I used to work at an airport listed in this reference actually. Their boneyard was fully behind the fence and no public access would be granted. Even as staff we never went there because you've got massive aging equipment.

It would be an untenable liability to be having around them especially the public. Some of the chassis were there for years.

brianjlogan··on I can haz smoller NixOS ISOs?
Pretty common method these days to build something just for the task at hand and consider deployment immutable requiring a new build of the ISO.

Do you have any good sources for this I'd be interested in learning more

Lots of historical precedent for an intellectual elite ignoring the perception and needs of the common folk leading to an uprising.

I'd imagine every great(in scale/importance) uprising/political tumult had some aspect of "but they're ruining everything!"

Everything for intellectuals and people with ties to the system that was functioning for that minority.

Coal miners don't care that international students aren't coming to the US anymore. That's not an important factor for them.

Edit: My point here is that you don't need hindsight to see how this aligns with historic precedent.

Thank you so much for this quality reply!

I shared earlier in the thread about the learning app I'm working on. I already have a learning path created in it for Formal Methods. I will be taking each of your points and tracking my progress to completing them.

Just wanted you to know your effort won't be unappreciated.

brianjlogan··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
I have knowledge of FM primarily from HackerNews posts about it.

As someone lacking your academic background in it could you give me some advice on a good starting point, or perhaps papers/materials that are absolutely unskippable/foundational to understanding it, maybe a good learning exercise for utilizing FM?

brianjlogan··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
Ah neat idea!
brianjlogan··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
Nice, I will look into this more
brianjlogan··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
Ah I think you posted on HN before. Good to see you again. I haven't gotten around to testing smol yet but the DirtyFrag / CopyFail stuff peeked my interest in it again.

Nice! Raft is cool. Looks like a fun implementation project
brianjlogan··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
Are you familiar with FizzBee. I think formal methods is already very hot right not with more demand for proving AI generated code isn't garbage.

(Even if you're hand writing people are going to assume or suspect it's LLM gen.)

brianjlogan··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
I like your idea. I didn't have the time to fully build mine out but I also was hankering for something with better readability and implementation than SaltStack (server/client similar to Puppet).

The pub/sub model was so much FASTER than the Ansible push methodology.

I'll check your repo out for sure

I'd love this if you could match me based on my time slot available to play games with someone.

I had my problem in the calisthenic app space as well. Rowing, cycling, biking, calisthenics. Each sport has such specifics I wish there was an open standard on the data for better interop.

Have you seen rusternetes?

https://github.com/calfonso/rusternetes

I picked Rust as my language before the AI hype in popularity so I'm biased on k8s tooling in my focus language.

Cool project!

You know I'd love an ability to a "lock" a file from being read by agents.

Casual browsing of a .env is probably my top pet peeve of coding agents.

Everytime a secret gets slurped into an API I have to go roll secrets.

Does this tool solve that use case?

brianjlogan··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
Super interesting. I'm also super into the idea of always online continual learning.

I'll check it out. Thanks for sharing.

I have paid for to do apps to try and tackle this by using the NLP "every 3 months" etc to basically accomplish this.

I think you're smart to spin it out to its own thing because I tend to use them differently batching my chores into a time gate and then using my "chore list" to know what needs to be done. And also the notifications for chores tend to distract from "Important one time task you don't want to forget".

I'd consider paying for this if the app was well done and reasonably priced.

I'm working on an Alpha with a tester group for a learning product. A personal research extended to curriculum building and team training SaaS. I'd like to open source it and work on federation but those don't pay the bills yet. https://chunkker.com

Coop I'm trying to bootstrap. Interested in building tooling and experimenting to make Sociocracy viable. No VC, No external investment, other than mulling Coop bonds for capital raising capability. https://kinkoda.com

Feel free to contact me via the web forms if you have experience launching apps or platforms like this or you're just interested in discussing the product.

Hey I'd really love your input based on your academic background on an app I'm building if you have the time. It's learning focused.

I'm a Dad homeschooling a son and have a dog in the race of making parental guided education easier.

I have an Alpha user who's a PhD and makes courses but I still want diverse feedback.

Because also look at the bond market... It's all coming to a crescendo including the global economic recession indicators which will be a cold sprinkler on the whole party.

Gemma4 being able to run on commodity hardware I think is the real win out of this. Pop the bubble. Settle the craziness and the claws. Let scientists and engineers tinker and improve in the background. Hopefully we can have GPUs be affordable for gaming again although I'm starting to think that will never happen.

Besides to say that your competitor can turn around and hire the same team of PHDs at the same rate that you can. Compare and contrast PHD's on leaderboards and have access in seconds with a new API key or model selector.

Granted LLM's are not even PHDs.

What a weird time we live in...
