briandilley··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
So... do the materials that it is printed on make it rare? Or is it the combination of ideas, paragraphs, and words that comprise the text make it rare and therefore valuable? If they're releasing digital versions of this text, i feel that is better off anyway.

briandilley··on Don’t use “click here” as link text (2001)
None of this matters, considering that "click here" converts better by a long shot.

Oops - Northridge, CA.

briandilley··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
Building an electric 1973 Ferrari Dino to compete in the battle of the builders at SEMA in November. Lots of fun electronics and software, as well as mechanical challenges to overcome.

briandilley··on WTF Happened in 1971? (2019)
Unix epoch starts Jan 1st 1970 - could this have anything to do with it? As in, we started getting better at keeping records and more detailed data because of computers?
briandilley··on Beyond SQL: A relational database for modern applications
I have yet to come across a replacement for SQL that makes it easier, or more concise, while also remaining feature rich. Not knocking this, but SQL is a pretty solid and time-tested technology for querying structured data. Alas, if we don't experiment then I guess we wont get better.
briandilley··on Laid off by Big Tech, then recruited for contract work – at the same place
Same thing happened to me in the early 2000's during the first dotcom crash. Except my contractor rate was nearly double my full time rate. It was rather dumb, but obviously they didn't bring _everyone_ back that they had laid off.
briandilley··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
> Just a way to talk about what you're doing without specifically mentioning that "we're doing this to get more money", which is the actual reason anyone ever does anything.

blanket statement, also bullshit. Of course money is a driver, but if that's your only driver as an entrepreneur then you're likely not going to be very successful. In fact, this is the primary difference between VCs and builders.

briandilley··on Ask HN: What is the thing you've built that you regret the most?
TikTok
briandilley··on Hiring discrimination: a problem for men in female-dominated occupations
Impact. Impact is #1.

Interesting thought though, what if the product in question is a product geared toward a younger audience that younger devs are more "in tune" with? Assuming they have more impact as a result.

briandilley··on We don’t use a staging environment
> Pre-live environments are never at parity with production

Same with your laptops... and this is only true if you make it that way. Using things like Docker containers eliminates some of the problem with this too.

> There’s always a queue

This has never been a problem for any of the teams I've been on (teams as large as ~80 people). Almost never do they "not want your code on there too". Eventually it's all got to run together anyway.

> Releases are too large

This has nothing to do with how many environments you have, and everything to do with your release practices. We try to do a release per week at a minimum, but have done multiple releases in a single day as well.

> Poor ownership of changes

Code ownership is a bad practice anyway. It allows people to throw their hands up and claim they're not responsible for a given part of the system. A down system is everyone's problem.

> People mistakenly let process replace accountability

Again - nothing to do with your environments here, just bad development practices.

briandilley··on Why is there a TikTok tracking pixel on UberEats what is this crap?
Nothing. Because TikTok didn't put the tracking pixel there, UberEats did. It's from an advertising campaign that UberEats is running on TikTok. The need to related "conversions" (ie: people ordering/buying shit) on their system with whichever ad they were given on the TikTok side.

briandilley··on Maker's Schedule, Manager's Schedule (2009)
Here's how we do it:

- Get rid of as many standing meetings as you can, and then get rid of more of them (1 a week is max)

- At the end of every standing meeting, ask the group "Do we still need this meeting?"

- If you feel you need a regular standup, do it on slack/whatever-you-use instead and asynchronous

- The non-makers still need to be able to communicate with the makers, provide a clear chain of communication so that the smallest number of makers are disturbed in an ad-hoc fashion, preferably only 1 (usually a tech lead / engineering manager)

briandilley··on API pagination design
Been doing it this way for a while actually. Even when it's used as a limit and offset. I find it's a good way to hide the actual pagination implementation from the client and therefor easy to swap out later without the client changing. Here's an example of a `Pagination` object that I use server side to generate and parse cursors (It's written in Kotlin):

briandilley··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
> morally ambiguous discussion of the institutional ineptitude of conservative western cultures in mitigating the effects of crime, rather than a typical 'good vs bad' cop show.

That's a mouthful.

Basically you're saying that the cops operated questionably due to or because of the conservative government's inability to effectively fight crime?

briandilley··on Zig 0.7.1 Released – 69 bugs fixed

briandilley··on Show HN: Joraph – a Java/Kotlin library for assembling complex object graphs
I created this library in 2013 to solve a very specific problem. Since then it has been refined many times over and made more feature complete. It has been used in some fairly high profile projects with impressive amounts of traffic and proven to be battle tested and production ready. Given i recently left my job (I'm looking for the next thing BTW) I decided to finally write some documentation for it and refine the API a bit so that others may be able to use it and find it as useful as I have.

Thanks!
