brett40324··on Tesla in autopilot mode crashes into parked Laguna Beach police cruiser
And when software on a car assumes pedestrians always have a mobile device on their person, charged and ready for a split second alert? IMO This would be an absurd design.
brett40324··on GDPR for lazy people: Block all European users with Cloudflare Workers
I answered your question the first time. The answer is no. If you really had to ask this, just google "does gdpr apply to non eu companies?"
brett40324··on GDPR for lazy people: Block all European users with Cloudflare Workers
"but we do have some european customers"

The entire point is, NO you can't just ignore GDPR. Your lack of action toward compliance is negligent.

brett40324··on The Posh Pen Paradox: when writers and artists fear their tools
Ive been playing guitar for 25 years and still practice on high action junk $50 pawn shop acoustics, or even kids sized walmart guitars with now almost rusty strings. I do this for dexterity, mostly playing scales and usually out of tune. Then for actually playing, recording or anything serious, of course I play something nice.

Aside: I started learning the mandolin last year and picked up a Rogue model for 40 bucks. Ive learned to make it sound pleasant, but it is terribly strenuous to play. When i do upgrade I know that the piece of crap it really is will have done me very well :)

brett40324··on Launch HN: Rhythmm (YC W18) – Create channels and broadcast them to an audience
> web client soon

For subscribers, I want to be able to send them directly to a URL in their browser, not have them install anything. I recommend providing this sooner than later. Let users decide if they want to use the platform in a mobile or desktop release based on their needs and frequency of use of the website.

brett40324··on Launch HN: Rhythmm (YC W18) – Create channels and broadcast them to an audience
For a few ideas im working on, I could see using a Rythmm channel to communicate to my audience and make announcements to users on updates and latest news. Personally, I'm not very interested in blogging about my product/services, or having a blog serve the need to communicate announcements. Currently, I might feel the need to: 1. Write a post 2. Announce the post on social media. 3. Link to the post in a newsletter 4: repeat over and over...

I could see using Rhythmm to serve all the needs for me to simply 'say stuff', without all the other services and social marketing related work involved.

Note: Im making these observations in relation to an audio based project.

brett40324··on A startup is pitching a mind-uploading service that is “100 percent fatal”
Your position on this is a little disturbing, and ignores every child/young adult who either grew up poor and had to work, or worked part time because their parents didnt buy them a car or every other thing they wanted as a teen. Or, they just actually wanted a job. I mean, in the US you can go anywhere and there's 15 and 16 year olds working as clerks, restaurant employees, etc. I got my first legally taxed job in Indiana as a 'root beer boy' at a diner when I was 14!

Edit:

https://www.childtrends.org/indicators/youth-employment/

From link, "As of October 2015, 49 percent of all youth ages 16-24 were employed in any work, either full- or part-time. Youth enrolled in high school had an employment rate of 18 percent, while the rate for those in college, either full- or part-time, was 45 percent."

brett40324··on What is happening in the Arctic is now beyond words, so here are the pictures
I can't answer on where to best find this data, but it is compounded by many industries. Particularly, manufacturing and the transportation of raw materials that are transformed into products by other manufacturers and then distributed to distribution centers, and then again distributed to local regions and retailers. This, for every last little thing. If you want to talk just plastic bottles, we consume 1 million bottles a minute. In the summer, when working outside or when I used to work in smoldering hot factories, I would drink about 4 large sports drinks a day during an 8-12 hour shift (there were 2500+ employees and never shutdown). Now add just vehicle emissions. Everyone driving to and from work, or to buy all the things. You drive and purchase a banana. That banana probably traveled 2k-3k miles in fossil fuel powered transportation. It's a compounding problem, of all the things. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/trevornace...
brett40324··on Harley Davidson’s EV debut could electrify the motorcycle industry
Agreed. The problem I see with similar comments here about noise and the character of these (fair to say overly obnoxious) riders, and how it affects your life, is that the same can be said of All of other loud vehicles. It's like complaining about the character of people with too loud of music blaring. They like it loud. They're different than you. This is America, where it's loud, and youre free to be loud too. This coming from someone who is especially sensitive and irritated by noises Im not making myself.
brett40324··on Harley Davidson’s EV debut could electrify the motorcycle industry
"In SF we have these bastards who love nothing more than to rev up their engines and make noise, on residential streets, at night."

This is pretty much everywhere in the US. Aside from local ordinances, there is nothing you can do about. To call people bastards for a loud bike is one thing, but have you ever heard 'loud pipes save lives'?

brett40324··on Space catapult startup SpinLaunch comes out of stealth
Is there a calculation to determine a max spin speed of an object? Can an object spin infinitely faster and faster if it had unlimited energy and force spinning it? Is there a name for where centrifugal force is so high that an object rips itself apart? Picturing hand tossing pizza dough as a simple example, but what about massive structures?
brett40324··on Growing a company that sells miniature construction supplies to $17k a month
Youre talking about an entirely different product and potential market. The manufacturing process, distribution, materials, along with red tape (food safety containers and preparation) are going to have a much higher investment and time to market than OP's niche. This is what makes serving a small niche, and the process involved with executing a business plan around such a niche, not as easy as it initially appears. I love your idea, but it has nothing to do with 'bricks', and has everything to do with 'fun custom confectionaries'.
brett40324··on Growing a company that sells miniature construction supplies to $17k a month
Search for Start Small, Stay Small. This book is full of truth and wisdom, and has excellent insight on building and using a mailing list.
brett40324··on What I wish I knew when I became CTO
I agree, and commend how well you've noted the problems when code is written without tests. Such a codebase becomes mentally exhausting and expensive to probe into; much more expensive than the original time saved by ignoring testing practices altogether. Sure, a huge amount of legacy software may not have tests, let alone comments. Then yes, it's like where do you even begin and have any confidence in what youre testing for. But ignoring proper testing practices in new, modern codebases, especially in a business where the single product or service offering is software, is extremely risky and irresponsible. This is a little ranty because why are devs justifying not writings tests in 2018!
brett40324··on Who Killed the Junior Developer?
> I think the "Junior" title is used entirely by companies to get a discount at salary negotiations these days.

I think there's some truth here. What I consider some proof of this, is an unsolicited recruiter email I received today. The role was called junior web developer, a $25.00/hr contract only position, but listed a mathematics or CS degree as a requirement. Like, am I nuts to think this is preposterous?

brett40324··on What I wish I knew when I became CTO
> How do you make sure that the refactored class does the same thing as the old one?

This. This is the problem. The answer, with tests.

brett40324··on Chrome will stop displaying ads that are repeatedly flagged as disruptive
Any source code to source code translation is considered transpilation until targeting byte code or other form of representation that is byte code, VM, or CPU specific. The terms do become blurred sometimes.
brett40324··on Chrome will stop displaying ads that are repeatedly flagged as disruptive
> DSL to Javascript

That is a perfect example of the definition of transpiler!

> in the U.S. people would completely panic if the Govt had a extensive registry with everyone's info

Not in the same vein as google having my internet based data, but the us govt very clearly and publicly has many such extensive registries that are widely known and relied on parts of the country's basic infrastructure.

I realized, just today, that the secrets module is new to 3.6 after trying to pip install it. This being provided directly by the language is a game changer, IMHO.
brett40324··on Sprawling Mayan network discovered under Guatemala jungle
This highly corroborates Charles C Mann's book 1491: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1491:_New_Revelations_of_the...

From wikipedia: The book presents recent research findings in different fields that suggest human populations in the Western Hemisphere—that is, the indigenous peoples of the Americas—were more numerous, had arrived earlier, were more sophisticated culturally, and controlled and shaped the natural landscape to a greater extent than scholars had previously thought.

brett40324··on Show HN: Sapper.js – towards a better web app framework
FWIW, there's Dart, but at the end of the day it's still just JS. This isnt to argue your point either, but one possible answer to the question(s) you bring up.
brett40324··on The Case Against Reading Everything
Not sure why you're down voted, but it's probably for the lack of further description on why not to take the latter author's advice.

Anyhow, i agree with following Steven King as someone to look into for inspiration and advice on writing. The only reason i'm making this comment is because i want to mention something i once read about King that has always stuck with me. That being, that when he ends the last page of a novel, he then writes the first page of his next work right away to avoid ever having a time without some work in progress.

brett40324··on Will Cash Disappear?
One thing that comes to mind after reading all the comments, is the seemingly very healthy and lucrative ATM business. Also, in the US, cashier's checks, money orders, and sending money via services like Western Union accept cash only. Most? state lottery sales are cash only as well. With these industries and use cases, i lean toward the notion that "cash is king" and will exist as paper notes and metal coinage for another 2 or 3? decades.
