breppp··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
They are mainly using the known fact that there's no chance in hell that the US will invade Iran with ground forces. They also previously negotiated as if this war would never start, so they might make a mistake as this is Trump after all.

In any case, Iran is not in a prime position either, it has many economic assets that can be completely destroyed as it has no air defense and then leave them in a much worse situation, while the only real damage they can do to the US is by attacking their own neighbors

Not here at least

breppp··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
They have been preparing for 50 years yet lost all their leadership, nuclear facilities, ballistic missile manufacturing ecosystem and air defenses in minutes to days.

The US is not doing amazing in this war but no need to give the Iranians too much credit. The Iranians are expanding a lot of resources of their own as much as this war drags on.

It is still very early to say how a country will fare considering that it ran out of water and was on a verge of economic breakdown and revolt before fighting a prolonged war with economic blockade of its main export.

Yes, and the founding belief of corruption is that, "that's the way it works", "everybody does it", "this can never change".

That essentialism is exactly the notion the poster I was replying to was echoing

Western countries were also corrupt at a time, bribery was common, yet things can change

breppp··on More German than many Germans
Why? Do you think a country is going to improve if anyone with potential like the OP would move to the West?

I haven't suggested someone should wait it out, but the notion that nothing can ever change because it's "culture" sounds absurd to me and as an excuse to not try

breppp··on Apple is getting this wrong
I see it as the Anti-AI aesthetic. When you write using this style it is obvious this isn't LLM generated and you signal this is well thought out.

If you noticed Sam Altman's latest posts he moved to all lower case, including "I", which I see as due to the same reason

breppp··on More German than many Germans
The way I see it is the cultural change happened after the Prussian elites lost power and the general German public understood their recent history as far from the eternal victory they were promised. That's a major cultural change however you want to spin it, and there are enough examples in history where countries haven't gone through the same changes in similar situations (Weimar Republic also comes to mind)

Regarding the current day pacifist state of Germany, in my mind it is still very drastic anti-militaristic compared to the vast majority of the world.

Regarding corruption, countries changed drastically during the 20th century due to ideologies and individual action, sometimes resulting in disaster but also often not. Trying to say nothing can change is a defeatist deterministic attitude that has no anchor in recent history.

Presuming we are talking about migration, most of these source countries were able to fight and win European colonization in the past, why do you think that's easier than fighting corruption?

breppp··on More German than many Germans
> I cannot change that, it's part of the culture, it annoyed me to no end, and my individual actions didn't matter at all while making my life harder.

That's never true, countries changed extremely, also cultural-wise. If talking Germany the basic example is changing from a very militaristic society (far before the Nazis) to a rather pacifist society.

If talking corruption, my own country has progressively became far less corrupt over my lifetime

The issue here is probably because you need to show how your work relates to AI to get promoted

Yes, using a warrant from a court. If the government wants to break into my house they can also do that with a warrant. Not exactly the same as having a key to my house though, and very far from a malware.

Also to be more specific, In apple ecosystem I can opt for encryption where they can't

breppp··on Thousands of People break through border separating Morocco from Spain's Ceuta
Algeria used to be France, not just a "territory they are keeping".

So we have an overseas territory in another continent whose acquisition literally marked the beginning of the age of colonization. Sounds like a colony

As far as I remember they mandate you connect to it in order for you to operate it.

We all know why, which is Adtech, but like cars or smart TVs, you as a customer either skip the entire segment or yield.

I have, I still have not heard how the US government uses these as malware, but I would love to learn something new
breppp··on Read this before you buy that TV streaming stick
You'd have to be a bit more specific of which government malware you found in Android/iOS devices, cause that would be interesting

You assume a lot of things, sometimes you have to connect it to the internet for it to work (such as robovacuums)
breppp··on Refactoring cuisine: how an Iraqi stew sailed to Singapore
Iraqi Jews had other stories of food migration.

For example there is the curious fact where due to Iraqi Jews the falafel in Israel has Amba as a condiment, originally an Indian mango chutney

breppp··on The Productivity Mirage
I think the most obvious aspect of this is that obsessingly customizing your environment for productivity is usually a sign of lack of focus and procrastination. So this story is not surprising

In the AI world you see it with the overly elaborate prompt markdown files where my agent gives performance reviews to 4 teams of agents each with its own quirky personality traits

Intent is a major part of a crime severity, and it's hard to attribute intent to OpenAI here
breppp··on I wanted a clock that never needed setting. Things escalated
The issue is which time signature do you trust without selecting an SSID, maybe by power? But I agree this can be an issue albeit small one in my opinion
breppp··on I wanted a clock that never needed setting. Things escalated
I assume you don't need to implement a full network stack just to read a discovery packet and it would be easy to add to future wifi routers
breppp··on I wanted a clock that never needed setting. Things escalated
I don't know how practical but I always thought of extending the Wifi protocol with a clock broadcast

That way all the microwaves of the world could listen in and update their clocks accordingly

breppp··on French firefighters face 'pyrocumulonimbus' for first time
We could reintroduce malaria, that might be a nice return to nature
breppp··on “We have information that Moonshot distilled Fable for the development of K3”
No, there might be lesser known periods in USA history but none that are censored.

Also generally the USA had never done crimes in the scale of the CCP (around 30+ million dead)

breppp··on Claude Opus 5
I am still impressed by the fact we have found a way to feed data to matter and get human surpassing intelligence, that's a very unexpected advance
breppp··on “We have information that Moonshot distilled Fable for the development of K3”
Fair enough you don't care, some people might want to know about the Uyghur happy camps, mass organ harvesting and such.

In a world where information sources are only going to dwindle, it is not in anyone's interest to empower actors that will use these to manipulate perceptions

breppp··on “We have information that Moonshot distilled Fable for the development of K3”
Software is protected by the DMCA, patents, licenses, EULAs, all of those aren't there for books. I doubt new laws won't be written for model outputs.

Also, if model output distillation is shown as some form of reverse engineering I assume the DMCA can apply

breppp··on “We have information that Moonshot distilled Fable for the development of K3”
One example is that a totalitarian government known for erasing historical record of its crimes will control an arbitrator of truth.
breppp··on “We have information that Moonshot distilled Fable for the development of K3”
Reverse engineering has stronger protections than merely copyright infringement
breppp··on “We have information that Moonshot distilled Fable for the development of K3”
Because model output is probably far closer to software or a licensed work which possibly has greater protections than it is to copyright. There is far less possibility of fair use, it might be protected by patents, license or reverse engineering laws.

In any case the laws are being written now, but I doubt these will have worse protection than software does, which has far better protections than copyright

breppp··on Irish datacenters now guzzle 23% of the country's electricity
I thought that went on until 2020, in any case, sure after the corporate taxes of the entire world were funneled there and had created data centers and imported a workforce to Ireland, it is now a place worth investing in.

However that does not make this construct any more moral
