I definitely agree. I've seen some very humanistic threads- feedback, offers, and connections happen here. I've also seen some roaring egos and ridiculous flame wars that rival the dregs of 4Chan and YouTube. Sure, the HN comments are more "intelligently informed," but silly arguments none the less. All in all, I suppose that duality is healthy for a community. However, I've been a member for 5 years and have only 639 karma points. I have no clue if something I share will be wildly upvoted, flagged or just simply ignored- thus I feel unsure if I am actually "welcome" here or not.
So @benbarry made some cool posters. Solid idea. Good job buddy. But seriously, everyone involved in this needs to contemplate the ridiculousness of these whiny teenaged first world problems. Print your posters. You can't copyright text on a page.
I find it very interesting that most of my hacker and tech friends feel almost no attachment / connection to the Occupy Wall Street movement. I wish I better understood why.
I do not work at Google. But, you may want to add a few more details like what your special interests in CS are, where you studied, what sort of work excites you, link(s) to projects you worked on, etc...
I'm interested to hear what the HN community thinks about this article. Last time I said anything about the "environment" a bunch of people responded with "Whatever hippie, go back to the woods then!" I'm an entrepreneur and a lover of tech, but without our environment... we're sorta ya know... screwed!
WOW, I guess no one on HN remotely thinks humans and the earth are facing any sort of environmental problems at the moment. All everyone here is talking about is the profit margins and logistics of pulling this preposterous, albeit very cool, idea off. I'm all for adventure, technology, progress, blah blah blah. I am thrilled about the possibilities of space. But realistically I think we as a species need to better undertand ourselves and create better; more sustainable systems on our native plannet before we embalance our natural habit and ecosystem on an intergalactic scale.
This is exactly what I was thinking when I asked this question. It seem that since Hacker News has gained more traffic > more submissions > more activity the quality of interesting has got a lot larger... perhaps it's the point system that encourages people to submit any old thing that they think is interesting in pursuit of more points, community status, etc...
I do not honestly know much about patents and the wording of laws, but on the Wiki page about Design Patents the phrase "Thus a design that was arrived at independently can still infringe a design patent." seems troubling. Hopefully it's as Perceval says, that they are just covering their ass from patent trolls.
Also Google's patent for "Collaborative web page authoring" http://bit.ly/2t287H seems more disturbing than the design one.
yah most notably the amount of results is larger but also the actual results are different with every query I have tried. At least half of the first page is always different.
I have not read any Ayn Rand but I will immediately. I can not help but think of our current situation with our President and how the public views him. As I grow and experience more, being a business owner, etc... It seems that no matter how much one human knows or thinks they know- there is almost always another human who knows something else and that something else just might be what the first person needs to know.
Fascinating little encounter. It continues to seem to me that ego, and all the slings and arrows that're attached, is the number one crusher of creativity.
Self-discipline is a very conscious effort. But when one needs to be creative one needs to be operating out of the sub-conscious and the conscious mind. However, it seems a certain amount of distractions and randomness are needed for any truly great creative thinking. I think the goal is to balance the two. Therefore, if adding discipline to one area of your life might help it could be totally worth it, like how Einstein would wear identical clothing everyday to free his mind from the business of deciding what to wear...
