There's an AIDs drug that no longer exists because of an isomorph of the drug compound that formed and spread making it so the original compound couldn't be made anymore.
breakyerself··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
When you find yourself stuck in a hole the first step to solving the problem is to stop digging. We're still digging at a superhuman speed. Meanwhile here you are talking about how you aren't worried because ladder building technology is really coming along, but nobody wants to talk about ladders.
breakyerself··on Climate change is strengthening El Niño, coral records suggest
I don't think it's his responsibility, but that was the outcome. I would say most of the responsibility lies with the fossil fuel industry and their PR agencies who funded propaganda that took advantage of the situation.

In that same time period we discovered global warming and ocean acidification as well as developed better ways of getting power.

The only downside we've discovered for having an accepting immigration policy is xenophobic backlash.

I don't know what point you're trying to make with that article. Less immigrants is causing hardship for their higher-ed system. How does that make your point?

breakyerself··on Climate change is strengthening El Niño, coral records suggest
I think Al Gore did more harm than good. He made himself the face of global warming and it helped spark a partisan backlash. There was a time when Republicans were not particularly skeptical of global warming. That shifted as climate change and Al Gore became more and more synonymous in the public consciousness.

For decades the US has managed to be the most powerful economy in the world while taking in tons of these immigrants. Rejecting them is likely to have a negative impact. Xenophobia comes at a cost.
breakyerself··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Do not conflate fossil fuels with all petroleum products. With concern to global warming we are primarily concerned with things you light on fire to generate electricity. There's no reason to mention things that aren't being lit of fire.
breakyerself··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Not long ago fossil fuel use was growing exponentially. The fact that its flatlined is a major turn in the course of history. There's no reason it can't begin to decline exponentially at any time.
breakyerself··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
No ability to prevent cancer? Ever heard of the HPV vaccine? I had polyps removed from my colon 10 years ago. There's a decent chance those would have developed into colon cancer by now. Prevention is a major part of reducing deaths from cancer. See also the effects of increasing taxes on tobacco products or restrictions on the use of asbestos.

Alternatively alternatively the government could subsidize medical school for doctors and nurses reducing financial barriers and allowing more medical professionals without lowering standards.
breakyerself··on A 25-year-old video patent just expired, ending a legal headache for Linux
I think their point was that it's not a good feature if even the owner doesn't use it. So there's no reason to copy it regardless of patent status.

breakyerself··on We Tested Nonstick Cookware: Coatings Don't Need to Look Worn to Shed Particles
I just make them fast and I add a little slurry of potato starch and water or milk to the eggs. Around a teaspoon to 2 or 3 eggs.

I just get the pan hot, add oil, dump in the eggs, shake the pan with the fork agitating, but not touching the bottom, take off the heat or reduce to low depending on how it's going, switch to a rubber spatula, add filling, fold and plate in the traditional way.

breakyerself··on We Tested Nonstick Cookware: Coatings Don't Need to Look Worn to Shed Particles
I don't have any nonstick. It's not that hard to cook anything or to clean stainless or cast iron. For cast iron/carbon steel 99% of the time I run it under water and rub it with my hand and it comes clean in 30 seconds. Rarely I use some soap.

Stainless comes clean easiest right after you use it. Especially if you pour a little water on it while it's still hot. I do occasionally use an SOS on stainless.

There's nothing I'm unable to cook with my pans. I make french omelettes in stainless steel pans and they come out perfect.

breakyerself··on Political bias in AI: Where the AI models stand
Reality really seems to have a left wing bias and grok us well known to have right wing views directly forced on it where the rest it's likely more of an emergency property. Especially as grok used to be a different animal politically.

breakyerself··on U.S. science is in chaos
I've heard that before and it makes a lot of sense.
breakyerself··on U.S. science is in chaos
Those were all ultimately for profit companies. You can only get so far with basic science if some bean counter is looking for a return on investment in the near future.

What those companies did is notable, but I think you are overselling their contributions to science. We've gotten way more scientific advancement from publicly funded science. There are private companies allowed to do R&D all over the world. Publicly funded independed science research is what has set the US apart.

breakyerself··on U.S. science is in chaos
Just having keywords associated with DEI could get a project defunded. Thee government isn't just defunding liberal projects. Look at the millions being thrown out on ocean monitoring because the Trump admin thinks global warming isnt a problem if you don't monitor it.
