bravogamma··on Tell HN: t.co is adding a five-second delay to some domains
Thank you, dredmorbius, for this very helpful response. dang has mentioned a procedure or system that involves making guesses for the purpose of shadowbanning. I wonder if downvotes (edit: or post flags) from special users like the ones you mention are used as strong signals in that guess-making?
bravogamma··on Tell HN: t.co is adding a five-second delay to some domains
Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Is it also true that users with certain karma count or special permissions have more significant - and potentially lasting - downvoting weight that impacts to the downvoted party's long term reputation?
bravogamma··on Tell HN: t.co is adding a five-second delay to some domains
Do you have get-out-of-jail or N-strikes-and-you're-out policies? What if someone's legitimate website gets caught in this? I've also long wondered about user specific shadow bans. Can you please shed light on this?
bravogamma··on Large Language Models Are Human-Level Prompt Engineers
Will you share examples for prompts that “vastly improved” your integrations?
bravogamma··on Show HN: Document Q&A with GPT: web, .pdf, .docx, etc.
Neat. How did you land on the 2000 figure?
bravogamma··on Show HN: Document Q&A with GPT: web, .pdf, .docx, etc.
Very cool. I gave it https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/3300/pg3300-images.html and it was able to pick up on some niche references in my questions. The text is quite long but it ingested it pretty quickly, which surprised me. Nice work. Does it cost you a lot to provide a service like this?
bravogamma··on Ask HN: How do you critically evaluate scientific papers?
Given a paper, how do you find out if it was reproduced, disproven, or failed to replicate?
bravogamma··on Carbon Language: An experimental successor to C++
Based on my quick read, “Why build Carbon?” section calls out just 1 problem with C++ which is the developer experience. Agreed.

However Carbon seems to do a whole lot more than DevEx. It’s practically a whole new language that can interop with C++. I don’t see the point in that. Would be great if someone pointed out why I should change my mind.

bravogamma··on Kyoto project is moving from GitHub to Sourcehut
Questions for whoever was involved with this decision or might know:

Why was Sourcehut chosen? Any specific appealing features?

Any alternatives considered?

bravogamma··on Meta VR prototypes aim to make VR 'indistinguishable from reality'
Why do you expect the content to precede the platform?
bravogamma··on Why We’re Sticking with Ruby on Rails at Gitlab
I like to refer to computing history as much as the next person, but the references in this post [0][1][2] came across as rather weak and mostly anachronistic.

Computer hardware, networking, and server software has evolved by leaps and bounds over the last 5-10 years, let alone 50!

bravogamma··on Binance has paused Bitcoin withdrawals “due to a stuck on-chain transaction”
What does a “stuck on-chain transaction” actually mean, can someone explain?

The least generous read is that they’re testing their withdrawals halting system in preparation.

bravogamma··on Safer Enums in Go
C++ programmer here. I was about to start a deep dive into Go today. Hearing there are no enums is giving me serious pause. How do large systems (e.g. Docker?) deal with this?
bravogamma··on It’s time to become an ML engineer
Thanks Greg. That post you just linked is super encouraging — I’ve been meaning to “do something with ML” for the longest time but couldn’t figure out where to start. P.S. Huge fan of what you guys are doing at OpenAI. Thank you for doing it.
bravogamma··on It’s time to become an ML engineer
I do systems software engineering. What should I learn in order to become an ML engineer?
bravogamma··on Help needed to build the colony on Moon, Mars and the Dyson Sphere
What are some supply chain inefficiencies you've identified?
bravogamma··on Moth Minds: Fund individuals doing work you believe in
Tangential question. The painting at the top of the post is gorgeous. How did go about licensing it for use?
bravogamma··on What elements does a plant need to grow?
Wonderful job and congrats, this looks awesome. Are there any sources (books, papers, websites, etc.) you (or anyone here) can recommend for further reading about the science behind the elements a plant needs to grow?
bravogamma··on Google exec challenges Berners-Lee (2006)
In reading this article, I found myself first completely agreeing with Berners-Lee, and then, completely agreeing with Norvig. I would love to see Berners-Lee vision come to life; however, I am not sure how to overcome the human vice elements Norvig is talking about.
bravogamma··on GitHub Copilot
Generating new code is not very hard for humans. But maintaining, extending, debugging code - often that’s where the real challenges are. Will the AI copilot be able to fix bugs in its code based on bug reports?
bravogamma··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Website looks really great. I’m curious, did you build this from scratch, or did you use some established boilerplate to make it?
