I found a way to get peace of mind for years and left the hell alone:
Turn a deaf ear to the cellular phone.
Send me a letter, or better, we could see each other in real life...
Just so you could feel me like a steel knife.

bravetraveler··on Ask HN: Are you a subscribed LLM or a locally deployed open-source model?
Open models exclusively on hardware I own... despite my employer both demanding 'the frontier' and providing unlimited spend/quota. Two main points:

1: primarily for repetitive/arduous things I'm not concerned with outsourcing. Editor features on steroids, basically.
2: testing how my lack of *tracked* token usage, but still delivering, is handled by the powers that be.
To get us on the lab gravy train, we were told results matter and how the thing is made doesn't; we'll see. Not left behind yet :)
bravetraveler··on I'm not paying $20 for ChatGPT or Claude because a free local LLM does
A lot of quotas, reset timers, changed terms, and so on too through the subscription. I prefer to buy and use my tools, not adopt them as part of my lifestyle.
bravetraveler··on Claude Haiku 5.5
I've heard tell about 100% of certain types of work being ended in batches of six months. For years. Truthfully, I'm skeptical, but accuracy wasn't prioritized.

> Are you assuming these folks are ... or customers are sharing via word of mouth?

Seems fair to me (interjecting: not the parent poster). I rent, too, but have heard countless conversations along these lines among Proper Adults.

Often grown-up #1 complaining about their latest project and grown-up #2 offering someone that served them well in the past. Point being, bad experiences are both so common and costly... that those who are good tend to stand out and stay busy. IME, those listings or the phone book are most suitable when you don't have a relationship to leverage (effectively rolling the dice).

bravetraveler··on OpenAI safety leader quits, warning AI company's culture is 'broken'
Darling companies of this very website have mistakenly brought down large portions of the internet thanks to our old friend BGP. No attacks required, just small oversights and unfortunate concentration on the business/IP space! This happens regularly.

Anyway, to your point, things can be resilient. They tend to be or not be... because we made them that way. Don't poke your bruises, and all that. Life support is deployed on-campus but relies on a single-point IPSec tunnel to us-east? Easy fix: stop that.

Easy, now. Pointing this out is reportedly against the rules, making the ground defacto plastic. In my opinion, of course, with the required curiosity.

Enforced by checkboxes on every login form, no doubt. Less sarcastically: I hope his corporate access is thoroughly controlled; we've seen him in 'full force', before.

Article says no change for .org... this will almost surely become interesting.

bravetraveler··on AI Has a Discovery Problem
Corporate mandates, the most pervasive advertising campaigns one can imagine, and so on; yeah, discoverability...
bravetraveler··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
> assume everyone else on Hacker News does

Eh, not to be rude/crass... but that would be inaccurate, if not hopeful. Myself and others don't, despite mandates; in fact, I aim to see this 'left behind' promise we heard years ago. Short of writing the at-will employment paperwork for HR myself, I'm not seeing it.

Escalations continue to fill my days. Turns out, people are somewhat correct: results matter. I'd say moreso than the tools we 'choose' (or skip, in this case). My null on the token scoreboard remains unnoticed/inconsequential, the work I've done has not.

All to raise a bit of timeless advice from Wu-Tang: diversify.

bravetraveler··on AI Can Make You Suck Faster Too
At worst, needs another manager to approve. Now they can both saddle up on the velocity/time to market wave... together. The racket begins in earnest.

How does a manager do this, they ask? I answer: the same way they do everything. Lunch. If the effort fails, at least they tried! Deck chairs, Titanic, etc.

Be brave, drop the LLMs. Make them put you on a PIP for doing your work without the chatbot.

I assume this is astroturfing.

> I don't understand what you want to hear ... in the near future.

Interjecting, here. Perhaps not an academic repeat of five years ago; is this an eon for Technology or not long enough? I've lost track. Anyway, I appreciate the optimism.

An anecdote, from the ground floor: this industry has shown it's paying leagues of on-site hands to install systems, at scale, from USB keys. PXE products have existed for decades; we're writing one [to adopt] when we could take one off the shelf. These artisanal OS installations are too rich for my blood. Or, they would be, if this modernization didn't happen to be the code I'm still writing by hand. Half a decade in (or several) depending on perspective.

I'll believe things are progressing as you say... when this type of mismanagement stops happening like clockwork. Want more chatbots/datacenters? Catch up to the mid-1980s; BOOTP 'just' dropped.

Didn't think we'd have model launch pages so 'soon'; how long until we have something Steam-like and can preload our eagerly-awaited models?

Anyway, eager to try [on hardware I own]!

No. Let me help dissect; first half is quoted from what I mistook to be a well-known song and the second half is... I don't know how else to say this kindly, discernible (and all me). The main reasons I'm not flipping that grating question on you: song age, search engine decline.

Said plainly: the previously-mentioned keys will absolutely be handed over. Nobody, not even your mother or her favorite LLM, is to be trusted to such degree.

Third crack commandment: never trust nobody; your moms'll set that ass up, properly gassed up

Applies every-which-way; the chat bot, the provider, the consumer.

bravetraveler··on Framework discloses data breach via Metabase 0-day
Your point, I suspect, is well-taken: choices are limited. Preference would be... any business which doesn't have the information to leak it in the first place. Retail, cash? Does that still exist? Anyway, this "we'll share excessive information with too many partners" pattern is far too normalized. Eventually I may be forced to choose the forest over buying [or building] another computer.

Realistically, if I had to buy: my employer, probably, given a reasonable discount. Unless you know a business that doesn't eagerly share personally identifiable information [which ends up leaked]... I'll aim for reduction, not resolution. I'm sure you've heard the quip about making Perfect the enemy of Better.

Regardless, and more fairly: with prices squeezed, and the pile of hardware I already own and ignore [including several old-school towers, both Framework desktop/laptop, and Steam Deck/Machine], I'm not foreseeing much shopping. Big loss on their part, I know; wish that was the intention.
