brational··on The Causes of Long Covid
Having gone through this too, I also had to accept that a lot (not all!) of it was in my head and made worse by it. When I convinced myself that “this will pass” and “this slow steady plan will get me out of this eventually” was when I finally saw regular progress (progress, not immediate relief).
brational··on Solar and batteries can power the world
> which requires constant, continuous resource extraction

Is there an upper bound on battery limits with regards to resource extraction?

brational··on Facebook is cooked
ha.. I was about to type this exact paragraph. my instagram has no human connections, I only follow local business (food, bars, museums/gardens, non profits, etc) so I can be aware of specials & things. I have no followers. I don't really like anything but clearly engage with cooking stuff, funny animal videos, comedy in general. Multiple languages. lots of crossover.

Honestly it's a pretty great instagram experience.

And yes I'm a middle aged male so no matter what the smut comes back (at least I get it in multiple languages too?)

brational··on You’re not burnt out, you’re existentially starving
When you have over extended responsibilities you have to readjust expectations. Some adults never learn how to do that and feel miserable all the time.
brational··on Facts about throwing good parties
Right. Which makes it even more absurd that a Brazilian would make a singular classification to the whole lot.
brational··on America Is Backsliding Toward Its Most Polluted Era
They don't care - you can see it clearly in the person you're responding to that they're just thinking about their own personal wants. It's pure selfishness.
brational··on Sleep duration, chronotype, health and lifestyle factors affect cognition [pdf]
> Furthermore, drinking weekly seems better than monthly.

Would seem to potentially imply more routine social activity / community.

brational··on Paying people to work on open source is good
https://jacobian.org/2024/jan/10/philanthropy-update/ took 15 seconds to find on the website.
brational··on Duolingo Cuts 10% of Contractors as It Uses More AI to Create App Content
I agree with the above poster that it’s a better use of 10-15 minutes. But not native shows/tv. Most languages have all sorts of content targeted at learners, sometimes even broken out by level. The Dreaming Spanish YouTube channel is an example.

But the challenge is you end up spending those 10-15 minutes researching content to use for practice! (I’m exaggerating of course, as once you find a few that’s usually hours and hours of material).

The technique here is called “comprehensible input”.

brational··on Did English ever have a formal version of "you"? (2011)
Totally depends on country.
brational··on 66% of Americans say they want extended European-style vacation policies at work
Right but I (and I assume others) wouldn’t trade 100-200k usd per year for 5-10 more days.

Not to mention most in that environment have plenty of flexible work arrangements as well.

I also CAN take unpaid extra days and most years do, in essence doing that trade for a better price (~1k per day), but I recognize it’s not that common in the US.

brational··on Has Google Translate been fixed yet?
Their Spanish-English is significantly more idiomatic than google but as others have said - far fewer languages supported. But I suspect deepl will continue to be better than google as they grow.

brational··on Signal says it won’t compromise on encryption
That's false - Signal has had sealed sender on by default since 2018. (the setting you can turn on is just to see an icon in the ui).
brational··on I asked Signal motivations for SMS removal

brational··on I asked Signal motivations for SMS removal
> So, I replaced Messages with another SMS app that doesn't spy on me and disabled RCS.

I think you know this based on the rest of your post but there is no “another SMS app that doesn’t spy on me”.

brational··on I asked Signal motivations for SMS removal
And totally readable and accessible by any third party
brational··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
Whatever they prefer. Whatsapp, imessage, or regular sms (when it makes sense). Or slack honestly. I have friends and family all over the world I only push for Signal where necessary and I want it to be good for that.

This one app nonsense is asinine. You’ll never get global adoption of one thing.

brational··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
Given the bizarre backlash here from people that think sms comms are ok I reckon I’ll start a monthly contribution.
brational··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
Rolled their own and off by default.
brational··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
That’s sort of the problem though. The sms was/is never secure.
brational··on Sauna use as a lifestyle practice to extend healthspan
So 12-15 mins + 10 laying down. Twice. ~ 40 mins or so per day you’re taking to sit/lay and do nothing (I assume you aren’t on the phone or reading/listening).

I wonder how much of this is simply the meditation effect / you’re just taking true mental breaks.

brational··on The dangerous playgrounds of 1900s through vintage photographs
Meh. How old are your kids? Mine climbs all over, on top, around, etc the playgrounds. The default parts are safe sure but he prefers to go on top of the whole thing then slide down the support arm. They’ll figure it out.
brational··on Heartbeats and heart attacks (2016)
Maybe your doctor further explained this but PACs are extremely common and not considered out of ordinary. Not sure if you were implying that the first doc missed it or not.
brational··on Everything with a battery should have an off switch
i was just thinking how it always annoyed me that my garmin smartwatch doesnt have an off switch but that’s good context. though quartz doesnt have gps sensors..
brational··on NIH will invest $1B to investigate 'long Covid'
op means lingering effects. very normal with pneumonia.

difference here is a lot of people with mild covid (no pneumonia) are getting lingering neurological or cardiac issues (or both)

brational··on Study Reveals Immune Driver of Brain Aging
article itself mentions issue of hoarding glucose instead of using it. elevated HR via exercise basically forces glucose to be used so. not surprising at all.
brational··on As internet forums die off, finding community can be harder than ever
ive seen those referenced more as the modern internet version of “the bar”. you pop in, engage in the current conversation in your desired channel, then good luck finding much in history.
brational··on Election Battleground State Changes
yea that’s a good point. make a pull request!

though for me just wanting a rough idea of what’s rolling in vs what’s needed it’s sufficient enough.
