brango··on gRPC in Production
IIRC on K8s there are some gRPC-aware load balancers, possibly Envoy, I forget.
brango··on gRPC in Production
I hadn't seen that. Thanks!
brango··on gRPC in Production
The only thing holding back gRPC is JS web support. If it had that it'd be time to drop swagger completely. As it is you need to go protobuf -> swagger -> js lib, but it's cumbersome and doesn't work 100% (e.g adding auth keys, etc.).

Will there be any progress on JS web, or can it just not be done at all with HTTP1? Even a subset of features for basic GET/POST would be fine...

brango··on Redis 4.0
You can use a StatefulSet which gives a fixed hostname per pod. Then you can have a sidecar pod that monitors the cluster, discovers the IPs of all pods, and uses redis_trib to create and maintain the cluster. It's a hassle to make it robust though.
brango··on Redis 4.0
Redis Cluster connecting to nodes via DNS instead of IP would vastly simplify deployment on K8s.

This is one of those things where you wonder why no one's thought of it before, or why this isn't just standard practice.

Maybe time to blow the dust off my PHP binary... Great work!

brango··on Toward Go 2
There's no obvious way to separate personal work, from work work, from exploratory work, from any other way you want to categorise your source directories. You just have to chuck them all in the same root and hope you can remember what each project is for.

brango··on Django vs. Flask
If you need user authentication use django. If it's for APIs use flask or gRPC.
brango··on TDD did not live up to expectations
I found it just flew in the face of iteration. I get something simple working, then iterate a few times, adding complexity. If you have to iterate your tests as well, you're just walking in treacle.

Either that or you end up with a load of stuff in your interface that you thought you'd need, but when you actually got to it you either didn't, or it wasn't important to implement at the outset.

brango··on Teller – API for your bank account
It wouldn't surprise me if it wouldn't stand up in court either. Short of having a huge banner that says "WE WON'T ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY LOSSES IF YOU USE ARE SERVICES, TYPE 'I AGREE' TO CONTINUE" I imagine someone could probably claim that the risks weren't sufficiently highlighted.

There's a reason every investment-related advert has to state that "The value of your investment may go down as well as up", etc.

brango··on Ask HN: How was your experience with AWS Lambda in production?
Chalice [1] makes hooking up lambda to HTTP endpoints easy, provided you don't mind using AWS API Gateway (and using python).

I use it to handle a contact form on a static web site. It works really well.

brango··on Job-Scoped Hadoop Clusters with Google Cloud
Same here. Built a pooling algorithm so we can have a maximum number of pools for each job type and distribute more jobs onto them when the maximum is reached. Clusters shut down when idle. It's served us well and saved loads of time and money.

How do you get that? I signed up, but it only gave me the basic one free.

brango··on Instead of containers, give me strong config and deploy primitives
Thanks. I'd missed that. It looks pretty close to what I want.

Just one suggestion - I'm uploading python files. It'd be nice to be able to exclude my `venv` virtual env directory from being zipped and uploaded since that's strictly for local use. From the docs I'm not sure if that's possible (I've not gone into detail with them yet).

If I can also run tests as part of the build process then I'd be sold.

brango··on Instead of containers, give me strong config and deploy primitives
I haven't used docker-compose. I'd been holding back with docker until all the stuff like service discovery, scaling, secrets, sane local dev and deployment experiences were available. So far K8s seems to tick all those boxes.
brango··on Instead of containers, give me strong config and deploy primitives
I've started using K8s and so far so good. Minikube makes local dev easy. However, I use K8s with ansible. So now I can:

* Build a fully baked container for local use

* Build a container that mounts my local filesystem for the code directory so I can have a sane dev-test cycle with hot-code reloading

* Mount a directory when running locally containing credentials for accessing Google Cloud services

* Spin up a K8s cluster in arbitrary GKE accounts, template and deploy my deployment and service accounts, pin some with external IPs, etc

* Push containers to GCR

* Deploy my containers wherever - shared directory ones can only run locally.

This is for an architecture with about 4 microservices and that will probably grow.

Now I'm working on an ansible playbook to zip the code directory of one of my microservices, upload it to GCS, then run a build container on my cluster to build the docker image for my microservice and push to GCR from there so I don't have to waste time pushing large containers up to GCR. Once this is done I'll look at promoting containers through dev/test/prod environments since all config will be done with env vars.

I've never read about using ansible with K8s, but to me it's a no-brainer. Most people seem to cobble together bash scripts, but using the best of both has really led to a good experience.

The benefit we hope to get is isolation and cost efficiency.
