brandonkm··on Grand Central To (Finally) Launch As Google Voice. It’s Very, Very Good.
I've been using G1 Central on my phone for a couple weeks now to make free calls. It's pretty awesome. Visual voicemail works great (minus the app downloading the voicemails to your sd card) and being able to sort everything online is really nice too. I'm hoping we get an official Google voice app with the cupcake update thats coming in April.
brandonkm··on Calling All Foodies: Y Combinator’s Foodoro Launches Online Farmers Market
Theres a number of bakeries that I really miss getting stuff from. Also, salsa, coffee, sweet tea, jelly, and barbecue sauce were always the best at the farmers market. I'm going to be down there for my spring break, when I stop by i'll be sure to let some of the merchants know about your site.
brandonkm··on Calling All Foodies: Y Combinator’s Foodoro Launches Online Farmers Market
This is pretty amazing. I would love it if there was a way to view various types of food and merchants by region. I'm from the Raleigh, North Carolina area where we have many awesome local farmers markets. However, i'm at college in the midwest and would love to be able to get some of these items online. I have no doubt that this will take off, but when it does and all the various merchants from nc sign up, being able to find them quickly and easily will be a great addition.
brandonkm··on There's always time to launch your dream
The undergrad years are definitely a great time to spend getting projects done. Not only projects, but exploring all the technologies that interest you. Luckily, I've never played World of Warcraft or else I would probably be in a different boat than I am right now.

Probably a really sweet submission. Like "new web framework lightspeed lisp screencast by Paul Graham on Justin.tv".

brandonkm··on Will Obama Break Up Google?
This article failed to take into account Eric Schmidt's connections to the Obama Administration. Wasn't he part of his economic advisory team?
brandonkm··on Sony Ericsson unveils the iDou (er, Idou), an iPhone-like phone w/12.1m camera
I think the n97 is a way better phone than the G1, but the G1 is pretty nice as well. It just doesn't have the 'wow' aesthetic factor or the gaudy specs that the n97 has. But that has more to do with the fact that Nokia really hit it out the park with that one.

Lately i've come to conclusion that enjoyment of the features on android are pretty much correlated to how many of the Google apps you use and how often you use them. I've used every other mobile OS out there and the things you can do with android you simply can't do on Symbian or the iPhone. You're essentially running Google's version of linux on your phone. I really like the notification system and the fact that its now at a point where any feature you want on your phone theres an app in the marketplace that can sort you out. Want your text message conversations to appear in chat bubbles similar to the iPhone? Theres an app for it. Want different colored lights to blink to let you know when you missed something? Theres an app for it. Want to slice out any part of any mp3 and make it your ringtone? Theres an app for it. This is only the tip of the iceberg here.

Right now my biggest complaint is the battery life. I'm not sure if its an issue regarding how android uses the phones resources, but the battery life could use a bit of improvement. Other than that, I really enjoy everything the phone has to offer. It helps me stay connected and organized in ways that no other phone i've ever used has.

Again, the n97 is really nice. Unless you live in Europe and can get it subsidized, I don't think I would go with it over the G1. The G1 has just given me a taste of how awesome android is, and the moment I can get it on a phone with a better camera and better features, I will most definitely pick that one up.

brandonkm··on Sony Ericsson unveils the iDou (er, Idou), an iPhone-like phone w/12.1m camera
This phone looks amazing. However, am I the only one tired of amazing phones coming out that don't run android?

Since i've used the G1 for the past couple months, I really can't imagine buying a phone without android on it. That is, unless Palm's webOS blows my mind.

brandonkm··on IVP’s Chaffee: Why I Invested In Twitter
Indeed. I thought calling twitter 'a new type of media property' may be hyping it up a bit too much. A more appropriate description would be 'a really popular web app'. This investor may be getting ahead of himself. +$35 million will buy the twitter team time to devise a business model, but how successful that business model will be remains yet to be seen.

brandonkm··on Google PowerMeter Measures Your Electricity Usage
The benefits of this project cannot be understated. This is a pretty forward thinking initiative and looks like it could pay dividends for everyone. Having google-analytics-like insight into energy consumption in your home would really bring new perspectives to people who would have never been able to access these kinds of insights. I'm really excited about this one.
brandonkm··on Ask HN: Hacker Listing?
It would certainly make for an interesting experiment, but I think it would definitely alter the nature of this site.

I really enjoy the 'minimalist' nature of HN profiles. They are short and sweet. I can see how opening profiles here up for more details or letting people attach resumes could provide benefits (more information being shared about each other, people getting jobs). Ultimately, its really hard to predict what will happen when new features are introduced here, but if people are landing jobs as a result, it can only be a good thing.

brandonkm··on Mozilla Ubiquity: a ridiculously useful Firefox extension
Projects like this make me love Mozilla even more. This type of extension is beyond useful and is outright intuitive. Can't wait to try this out!
brandonkm··on How Amazon's EC2 Service Was Born
This is a great aspect of the culture there that has helped Amazon maintain its technical competitive edge.
brandonkm··on Ask HN: Can you help me find a cofounder?
I would be really interested in hearing success stories about finding cofounders online. I agree that a tight founder/cofounder relationship is tough to find, but there seems to be no shortage of good hackers out there wanting to work on exciting things. So maybe its just a matter of finding one of those hackers that you can get along with? Furthermore, I think the "tightness" of these types of relationships are basically proportional to how good of friends these two people would be outside of that founder/cofounder relationship. I always thought the best teams consisted of best friends.
brandonkm··on Ask HN: First startup / cold feet. Any advice ?
Having a cofounder != an increased chance of success for your startup. Having the right cofounder that is as excited about your product and is as determined as you are to make something thats awesome will be the difference between failure and success.
brandonkm··on Ask HN: What do you wish Google Analytics would do?
I would love it if the analytics script was much less bloated. Seems that the extra time it takes to download what is basically a rather large javascript file could be seriously cut down by minimizing the script in some way.

brandonkm··on DreamIT Ventures Opens Up Applications For Summer 09 Funding Cycle
I've never heard of them before today. Looking at the portfolio I couldn't find any startups there that I've heard of before either.
brandonkm··on Ask HN: Best Places to Raise Kids?
It really depends on the part of the country you're in (or interested in moving to). I grew up in North Carolina where lots of families move to raise kids. Growing up, I saw growth of epic proportions. Families would migrate in droves to the triangle area from places like Ohio, Massachusetts, and New Jersey (this is still going on and the whole region is having some pretty serious growth problems). From what I gathered back then, and looking back on it now, I would say that good schools, good climate, nice people, safe area, reasonable cost of living, good colleges in state, and a nice outdoor environment are all paramount. These are mostly the reasons that people move to areas like where I grew up ( Cary, North Carolina).

I think the zune is a truly innovative product. It seems that everyone always immediately writes it off as an iPod ripoff, but the zune experience is actually really unique.

brandonkm··on Whitehouse.gov Has A New Face
I'm sure a ton of people will. In fact, I would bet that the whitehouse blog may introduce lots of people to RSS for the first time ever. The concept of a more transparent government where citizens are informed about the happenings inside the white house will be heavily at play here.
brandonkm··on Ask HN: Is anyone doing Blackberry app development?
I've been using phonalyzr for about a week and absolutely love it. Just wanted to say thanks for that awesome app.
brandonkm··on Ask HN: Do you program in black or white?
I actually program with a navy blue background in some languages and a white background in others. With ruby, python I have a blue background in vim and with xhtml, css, and javascript I use a white background.
brandonkm··on Why Google Employees Quit
> What makes Google what we see is that relentless pursuit of increasingly tiny increases in efficiency.

Absolutely. This fact is literally in the comapany's dna. A lot of issues that were mentioned in that article are a direct result of this.

I'd be curious to know how this affects all of the startups they acquire that remain dormant for so long.

brandonkm··on Ask HN: What unlocks with karma, and when?
At 250 apparently you can change the color of the bar on the top.

6 more points to go!

*Thanks to everyone who voted this up. I can now confirm that this is indeed legit. On your settings page you can enter a six digit hexadecimal number that will change the color of the top bar. I'm going to try some of these out! http://www.somacon.com/cgi/colorchart.pl

brandonkm··on Twitter May Have Found Its Business Model
The main problem I have with this potential business model, is the overt focus on adding friends as a part of the revenue stream. I think the focus should instead be on 'what we can do right now, with our userbase to make money?'. There is a large pool of current users that would gladly pay if twitter had attractive premium features. Maybe they should focus on extracting revenue out of their existing user base first and then move on to a more dynamic business model second?
brandonkm··on Django tests are now fast
Best news i've heard about django recently. This will undoubtedly make many 'testing obsessive' developers very happy, not only from a performance view but from a django feature set view as well.
