brainfog··on Google Plans to Launch Censored Search Engine in China, Leaked Documents Reveal
Why would I? Can you point me to evidence one would use to form that opinion?

Hi, googler opposed to Maven here. I found out about this today, just like you. Fuck right off with your assumptions.

I guess I just don't get the original comment. Even if some prc supporters oppose the US military, what on earth does that have to do with the (equally silly but for different reasons) "where are all the people who were against maven?" question if not to paint the majority of maven opponents as prc shills?

Are you seriously arguing that folks against maven were PRC shills?

Er, some of us are just as pissed about this. What's your point? This also only just came out. We don't carry pagers for whenever our employer does something we don't agree with.

> aka quotas of people with subpar skillsets

That is not the goal, nor the result of these efforts.

brainfog··on Ask HN: How many hours on the weekend do you actually perform on side projects?
None whatsoever. I'd rather read a book, go for a walk or learn to knit.

brainfog··on Ask HN: What companies in NYC are working on hard technical problems?
Well, there's always Google.

How do you know it's not?
brainfog··on Apple is close to acquiring Shazam, sources say
I've never had it work as fast or accurately as Shazam, especially in noisy environments. There's also no obvious way to get the full history of the songs I've searched for (there probably is - it's just not easily discoverable). I had high hopes for the automatic detection that rolled out on pixel 2s but have found that it only works on the terrible music that my gym plays.
brainfog··on Ask HN: Do you put Mensa membership on your resume?
No, because it does not take much to become a member, and listing it screams "I think I am very smart look at this badge that I got".
brainfog··on Google Goes Public with Unpatched Microsoft Edge and IE Vulnerability
Judging by https://bugs.chromium.org/p/project-zero/issues/list?can=1&q..., it looks like Apple, Adobe and Microsoft are the main vendors who miss deadlines, although I don't know how many other vendors Project Zero focuses on in total.

brainfog··on Canada forgot to plan for its future by leaning on oil and the loonie
I've noticed much less awkwardness and resentment when people are faced with non-French speakers in general - both in stores and with regular people. I'm not sure about how things are in the workplace these days, though.

Out of curiosity, when did you move away from Montréal? I would have agreed with you a few years ago, but things seem to have improved for anglophones as of late.
brainfog··on Canada forgot to plan for its future by leaning on oil and the loonie
My marginal tax rate in NYC is not too far off from what it would be in Québec. My income as a not-quite-senior software engineer, however, is ~3.5x higher. Taxes would have to go down below zero for a move to make sense financially.

That said, Montréal is a great city and I'm actually considering moving back, despite the dramatic drop in income.

brainfog··on Wake No More – The exhausting world of the hypersomniac
As someone who's been diagnosed with hypersomnia after several doctor's visits and sleep studies: that's correct. The fog very rarely goes away.

There's the occasional good day that comes once every few weeks/months to remind you of just how bad things are, but otherwise it's just constant fog.

Similarly to depression, things like a good diet, regular exercise, a regular sleep schedule, a bright light as an alarm clock all help improve things somewhat. Ritalin also helps if your heart can handle it.
