bradleyjoyce··on Hacker News, say hello to the Flagging Bury Brigades
I own the domain startup.io which I originally thought I would use for a Startup Q&A site.

A news submission site is appropriate as well.. anyone want to help?

bradleyjoyce··on Richard Branson Announces Virgin Oceanic Submarine
the human desire to explore and "be there" is very powerful and in most cases of pushing the envelop of exploration, wins out over logic.
bradleyjoyce··on Ask HN: Did Twitter just revert back to "old Twitter" design?
Yes - http://status.twitter.com/post/4375122023/temporarily-disabl...
bradleyjoyce··on Pitch your idea to executives flying on Virgin
the website is wildly out of date... are they still doing it?
bradleyjoyce··on Craigslist has been disrupted
Craigslist is so full of spam and reposts it's practically useless for major categories. Take for example Dallas apartments/rentals... hardly a single legitimate posting in there.

There is A LOT more to complain about than appearance.

bradleyjoyce··on Tell HN: It's time, 2 Twitter apps up for sale on Flippa
first bid is in at $5,000... reserve is met.. it will sell for whatever the bids come in at and I'll be happy with it.
bradleyjoyce··on Twitoaster shutting down
I'm going to have to make the same decision w/ my Twitter related apps, though I'm leaning more towards selling them.. on flippa if nothing else works out. They are TweetSaver, Floxee and UseQwitter if anyone is interested!
bradleyjoyce··on The Huffington Post hires Twitter co-founder Biz Stone
I was wondering about that... title of the article is definitely a bit misleading!
bradleyjoyce··on Why I broke up with Portland to build my startup…
come to Dallas! the scene is really starting to pick up.. http://launchDFW.com
bradleyjoyce··on Life at a startup
I really wanted to read it but it was too painful on my eyes... tons of text smashed together, taking up the whole page.

Fluid layouts are great, but there is a reason books aren't generally 12" wide. (hard for humans to keep their place on really wide texts)

Also, increasing the line-height of the paragraphs would help a ton.

bradleyjoyce··on My take on the Lean Startup Model.
I thought this post made some interesting and valid points. Mainly, don't drink the koolaid without thinking through the best strategy for your particular business/
bradleyjoyce··on 37Signals website in 2000 when they had 4 people and no DHH
is it just me or does this get posted like once every 8 months or so?
bradleyjoyce··on Ron Conway, Chris Sacca And Others Invest 800K In Dotcloud (YC S10)
my initial reaction, as a developer, is that most of what I do is in one language, so I want to use a platform that is a specialist and not a generalist.

That said, I'm sure I'll check it out and it does sound intriguing.

bradleyjoyce··on All the photos NASA-related twitter accounts are tweeting right now
no, Twitter frowns upon bulk-following...
bradleyjoyce··on All the photos NASA-related twitter accounts are tweeting right now
Thanks for the kind words! Flickr is definitely on the short list of sources to add!
bradleyjoyce··on Spreedly Core - API powered payments w/o burden of PCI compliance
From the email they sent out to current spreedly customers: "while you can already do this with our Subscriptions Payments API, doing so places the burden of PCI compliance on your shoulders. Core keeps the PCI burden on our side and allows you to focus on growing your business."

not sure exactly how the specifics of this will work...

bradleyjoyce··on Spreedly Core - API powered payments w/o burden of PCI compliance
as it's an extraction of http://spreedly.com, I imagine they would support the same gateways listed here: http://spreedly.com/info/payment-gateways
bradleyjoyce··on Review my Idea: Building Prototypes as a Business in Silicon Valley
my view on rates is that it depends heavily on (1) how well referred you were to the potential client (2) the level/quality of your portfolio (3) scarcity of similar services in your area.

my very first gig I charged $35/hr... now I charge almost 4x that.

bradleyjoyce··on Review my Idea: Building Prototypes as a Business in Silicon Valley
This is called custom software development, and thousands of development shops around the world do this... in fact it's how I make my living.

Is there some particular angle you're taking that makes it non-standard?

Entrepreneur needs X... you charge Y per hour and estimate it will take Z hours, but charge for however many it actually takes.

bradleyjoyce··on Ask HN: Is TDD/BDD hampering your startup's agility?
in my experience, yes, TDD/BDD slows me down (partially because I'm not 100% on it yet) BUT it's sooooo much more painful to me to add it back to legacy code than start with it fresh in a new project. I have two relatively large existing projects where I would kill to have solid test coverage, but to implement it just feels so daunting I haven't taken it on yet.
bradleyjoyce··on Twitter Suspends UberTwitter And Twidroyd For Violating Policies
why does the TechCrunch story get upvoted more than the original source?
bradleyjoyce··on UberTwitter and Twidroyd Suspended for Policy Violations
For this to be respectable on Twitter's part, they should have outlined what policy violations were committed.

As someone who has a number of twitter apps, all this does is make me feel even more afraid of twitter's increasingly hostile attitude toward their developer community

bradleyjoyce··on Show HN: GradeThePresident.com
yeah that was a bug... if you revisit the site you should be able to tweet it now.
bradleyjoyce··on Show HN: GradeThePresident.com
just made http://gradethepresident.com public. I built it as an exercise in forcing myself to do tdd/bdd with rspec and steak.

doesn't quite have 100% test coverage so would love any bug reports if you come across some.

Thanks!

bradleyjoyce··on Poll: How do you bill recurring payments?
one option would be to let your early users help you test things out for free.. with chargify, you can set up your site and everything in test mode, without paying for anything (I believe) as you work out the kinks. then you flip the switch to go from test to "live" when you feel you'll be able to cover the monthly fees.

Alternatively, you could do this, but charge your early customers via a simple Paypal recurring invoice until you're ready to turn on chargify.

bradleyjoyce··on Poll: How do you bill recurring payments?
I use Spreedly on TweetSaver.com ... like patio says, it works great and is easy to integrate... main downside is their reporting sucks really bad and they haven't added any new features in a really long time.
bradleyjoyce··on How to use metrics in a startup
> When not to use metrics... If your traffic is too low for metrics to be meaningful, then measuring metrics is largely a waste of time, and making decisions based on statistical noise is potentially harmful.

This is very very true. However, this should not deter you from making sure you have all the data tracking in place very very very early on. It's a HUGE pain to add metrics tracking later when you're growing like crazy.

bradleyjoyce··on Aerial footage of uncontacted Amazon tribe
as I am currently living in Peru, this is pretty moving to me. the argument here on both sides is pretty powerful, and you can easily find passionate people telling you it's real, or it's fake, etc etc. The president's (Alan Garcia) accusation that environmentalists are making "uncontacted people" up seems pretty ridiculous to me though, as there seems to be a lot of evidence supporting the claim that there a number of uncontacted peoples in the remote regions of the country.
bradleyjoyce··on Paypal's fraud prevention routine does it again
personal experience
bradleyjoyce··on Paypal's fraud prevention routine does it again
only a year... yeah that's about right.. you should be due for a business-crippling lockout by paypal any time now.
