bradishungry··on Oral history of John Chowning, inventor of FM synthesis [video]
I had a few brief conversations with John a few years back when I was helping a friend out at a synthesizer convention. What was extremely interesting to me is that he seemed relatively uninterested in FM synthesis from a musical point of view, at least he made it sound like at the time that was not his interest, and he was just very interested in a computer science point of view. The musicians I was with were very surprised about that. I could kind of understand it as a computer science student at the time and a musician, but it was still really surprising that such a monumental contribution to music was created by someone who wasn’t really focused on that at all!

economy != money, economies have existed before markets have existed
bradishungry··on The Price of Intelligence Is Falling Rapidly
Regardless of what answers there are to an alternative (there are many, with both flaws and benefits that could work better or could be worse in practice), the question “how would it work at scale” is probably impossible to answer thinking in the framework of what currently exists. The people who benefit from the existing systems would make it impossible for anything else without disrupting power, which, if you view an economy built around profit as something that could not be sustainable into the far future, could be necessary.

This comment isn’t trying to be biased any specific way, just trying to be realistic while also saying alternatives exist but would likely be disruptive for better or for worse.

bradishungry··on OpenAI is enlisting an influencer army to make it look 'good for the world'
Don’t forget the effect on students! It has the potential to be a great learning tool, but nothing is in place for that to happen. It more likely just kills all reinforcement learning
bradishungry··on How to Write with an LLM
No, you need to learn the new field you’re entering enough to write about it. Having incomplete knowledge and writing for others utilizing an llm that you do not know enough to fact check is about the worst way I can think of to use an llm for writing.
bradishungry··on What will our economic future look like?
What is obvious about that? What jobs are being created long term that can be filled by those displaced? To me it seems like even jobs that are not knowledge jobs are going to utilize ai to cut hiring, not grow it
bradishungry··on The Tradeoffs Facing Japan's Economy
this is really an oversimplification. Japan has been struggling since the real estate bubble popped and their post 2008 strategy of extremely low interest rates has lead to the yen carry trade which now is causing problems with raising rates, etc. there’s so many specific factors with japan that are causing issues before population
bradishungry··on The gap between open weights LLMs and closed source LLMs
“China can only copy the US” is a very short sighted and uninformed opinion. there is more coming out of china than just new ways to distill models
bradishungry··on 7 in 10 Americans oppose data centers being built in their communities
Benn Jordan has a video about the issues data centers can pose to their local communities. The xAI data centers are actively polluting their communities right now and there are several credible articles about it. Ruining normal people’s lives and the environment for “progress” against another country is extremely short sighted.

I have diagnosed adhd (since I was a child) and something I struggled with, which may be relevant to you, is that it can be really easy to tell yourself or believe you have a limited capacity to focus and later in the day you just run out. The idea that you can’t start doing a hobby because you don’t have the capacity to focus on something is untrue a lot of the time, and it’s noticeable in a situation where if you do really mentally taxing fulfilling hard work, sometimes you feel much more capable of doing those hobbies, because the same “focus” for one isn’t exactly the same as the other.

Not saying you’re wrong for feeling that way, just sharing a way of thinking that helped me out a lot

bradishungry··on We May Be Living Through the Most Consequential Hundred Days in Cyber History
It would be terrible, I don’t think you’re thinking about what kinds of discrimination can happen due to things like medical records. You can have laws in place to prevent it but if someone can freely see your entire medical history then people WILL take advantage of that. Not to mention how things like citizens traveling to states where abortion is legal, or if a parent disagrees with an operation could affect someone if things are public. This is only talking about medical records, too, the implications of other kinds of espionage have significant repercussions as well. Cybersecurity absolutely does matter
bradishungry··on F-15E jet shot down over Iran
It was extremely likely a tomahawk missile which Israel do not use. It was almost certainly the US. There are many many journalists who have written about it

what are you talking about? Valve has advanced wine lightyears since jumping into linux with the steam machines years ago, and their wine patches have lead to countless forks that people use for better compatibility. Wine was terrible before valve stepped into the linux space
