braderhart··on Tough questions we get asked: 2018 Annual Letter
Imagine how much further we could be if Microsoft didn't spend all that money subverting open source efforts, and spending infinite money to create a new generation of crippled developers.
braderhart··on Tough questions we get asked: 2018 Annual Letter
Just like when you start Windows for the first time, and get asked to sign in or register a Microsoft Online account to continue.
braderhart··on Tough questions we get asked: 2018 Annual Letter
What distro of Linux? What kernel version? Do you have graphics acceleration working? Are you running it primarily
braderhart··on Tough questions we get asked: 2018 Annual Letter
Google provided an open source operating system, web browser and built a container solution used by every major cloud provider.
braderhart··on Tough questions we get asked: 2018 Annual Letter
Well, you can use their OS, which has for years tried to undermine the free and open source communities, but you have to pay for it. And you have to agree for them to spy on you. And you're poor?? That is okay, just give up more of your privacy rights and we already sold all your data, so you will be a good consumer now.

You run Windows. Your mind belongs to us. Your ability to think beyond .NET and C# will soon diminish, and we will give you some mediocre job now based on your mediocre proprietary skills, and your role as a tech worker now be to spread your love for MS to everyone, because if you don't we will stop paying you, and you will have no food and no home. And you will not know how to use anything but Windows.

braderhart··on Open Source Color Management Is Broken
Yeah... I think both are applicable, but if you really want something done then you do it yourself or pay someone to help do it, especially for open source. It sounds like have a descent idea of where to start. I'd go find some kernel developers working on the underlying components, and offer to pay them or see if they have recommendations of people to get the work done.
braderhart··on Open Source Color Management Is Broken
Have you created it, cause if not then that might explain why what you want in detail doesn't exist.
braderhart··on Dropbox S-1
rclone works really well, and even supports Team Drives.
braderhart··on Dropbox S-1
Agreed, Keybase is kicking it up a notch and gotta love me some GnuPG!
braderhart··on Dropbox S-1
The CEO of Dropbox is listed as a founder of FWD.us:

I agree that Google contributes to undermining online privacy, but I still don't see Dropbox doing more in that regard. I'm sorry, but I really am not a fan of Dropbox after my experience with them, so I am inclined to be a vocal critic of their service (or lack thereof).

braderhart··on Dropbox S-1
In a lot of ways making the world a better place is about cost-effectiveness, and honestly what is Dropbox doing? Are they the main contributor to Nextcloud? Yeah, Google isn't much better in that regard, but I can buy a descent $199 unlocked Android phone now at Costco, and have all of Google services integrated. They also provide a lot of descent open source tools. Have you tried Kubernetes? :)
braderhart··on Dropbox S-1
Descent client yes, but honestly pretty terrible once you compare features. Versioning counts against storage, speed can be slow, questionable company...
braderhart··on Dropbox S-1
Dropbox never worked on Linux for me. It was buggy and maxed out my CPU. They didn't even provide proper changelogs at the time.. not sure if they do now? Is their application open source? Rclone works with Google Drive just fine, and it is unlimited storage.
braderhart··on Dropbox S-1
Look into GSuite and see what else you get, in addition to archiving support for Google Drive... and actually, GSuite is unlimited storage... sorry Dropbox, but you lose in terms of price and features.
braderhart··on Dropbox S-1
I don't. Google provides way more for a lot less money. You can encrypt your own content on either providers. For GSuite you get literally almost every service you can imagine, include a phone number that you can make unlimited calls to/from landlines with using your computer.
braderhart··on Dropbox S-1
Agreed. Thought they would be great at first, but their client uses way too much memory, especially in Linux. Their support was lacking. They don't (or didn't) provide changelogs. I finally switched to rclone and am using Google Drive due to price. Thinking that I'd need automatic syncing, I'm actually happy with manual syncing, so that I can track my changes as well. Crashplan does the automated syncing portion, and then daily or weekly, I will sync to/from Google Drive. I have my Photos sync from Google Photos as well using rclone.

When it is your job to hide your financial activities, then no not really.

YES!
braderhart··on Online voting in Finland: Conclusions and recommendations (2017) [pdf]
Or you could help work on an open source technical solution so that this ridiculous corruptible process is fixed.
braderhart··on Online voting in Finland: Conclusions and recommendations (2017) [pdf]
I'm inclined to believe many of these reports are biased and still pushing agendas, even if it is out of peoples on lack of understanding of how a blockchain solution would actually work. Largely, their inability to think creatively about technical solutions.
braderhart··on Are voting-machine modems truly divorced from the Internet?
Still probably 100x more secure the paper ballots counted by an easily corruptible social process, than a mathematical equation that is auditable by the entire world.
braderhart··on Manafort Left an Incriminating Paper Trail Converting PDFs to Word
Haha.. I don't buy into it either. Something is fishy about the story, or maybe this is a secret plea deal with a behind the scenes type negotiation process to trick other conspirators into providing more evidence.
braderhart··on Manafort Left an Incriminating Paper Trail Converting PDFs to Word
If drug dealers on Tor are smart enough to use GPG to encrypt communications and files, then it does sort of surprise me that these multi-millionaire mafia-type elitist with connections to Russian cybercriminal oligarchs, can't get basic security right.
braderhart··on Are voting-machine modems truly divorced from the Internet?
What are you even talking about? People on Hacker News should be pushing for blockchain voting. You are on a tech news site, where you can post in real-time, but we are supposed to "trust" a corrupt political institution to have people count our votes, with only about 100 opportunities for someone to compromise the process along the way.

No thanks... I'll take my real-time information to make sure that my vote was counted correctly. They can use my SSN for credit worthiness and to offer me money, but they can't use a cryptographic hash to help record my vote?

Well, you had to admit that with auto-complete, it is pretty cool to just type a couple letters and tab your way to heaven. Have you tried Rofi? There are some descent themes, but in all honesty the terminal is great. It is a text-based dynamic solution which makes it extremely versatile and compatible.

What is more natural than just typing and tabbing to what you want? That is some simple voice navigation stuff as well, or once you get to VR, then tab-complete can be like auto-suggest.

Have you seen Vim with perfect horizontal, vertical windows, and re-scaling? I have, and it is glorious! Once you add proper icon font support and Airline, it is hard to beat... yes, Neovim is probably better.

However, it is a matter of time before chopsui or another UI toolkit comes along that will essentially wrap around all these great terminal applications in a way that will create the layouts and styling that web users are mostly used to. I hope instead though that, it is more general, and that information is decoupled from design. Instead, I hope that sites will be able to request to change layouts, and that we will build better decentralized marketplaces for developers.

Haha... right now I have my desktop that I can show, which isn't perfect but I have an idea of where I want to go and how to get there (mostly). I am still running i3 for compatibility, but definitely moving towards Sway.

I've seen some great looking desktops that I still need to mimic, and the make them more fluid/responsive for multiple devices. I would like to review and look at what George Singer is up to:

https://github.com/SimulaVR/Simula

Seems like he may be offering VR devices for developers that are able to demonstrate some requirements. How cool is that? I would like to take something like Sway, and add or combine it with a project similar to SimularVR, with a Vulkan backend. That is the end goal.

I will likely just start with Sway and build a kick ass plugin and application manager that uses containers. I will re-explore the current application isolation solutions, such as AppImage vs FLatpak vs Snap, but likely try my hand at building my own.

Part of that process is repeatable builds. I would like to build the OS compilation into the decentralization process, and make distributed (and localized) compilation a core component of the crypto solution, as it will later be used for rendering all types of resources on top of something like IPFS and Git.

Ideally, package maintainers will be solely focused on automated builds directly from source repos, so that everything is compiled and versioned automatically, so that you can switch software versions at anytime, with some compatibility-script support for DB and data changes.

Anyway, that is a lot of talk, so I will have to share more when I make more progress. It is a longer term goal, but feel free to help me get started:

For example, you can see a UI kit here that I would like to utilize initially, although I am still inclined to try to implement my own idea here, which involves combining a

What do you consider some reasons then?

I really don't recommend running a Windows or Mac VM simply for compatibility, because then you lose out on a bunch of perks, but you can. I mean you can use something that is free and the source code is available for rich and poor people alike, and the web is full of information and communities to help you get started and prosper from your new open source skills and education. Or you can pay for spyware and then pay more to supposedly protect yourself from spyware, while installing more spyware to make you safer, and then you will need adware for that spyware, and then some additional apps to make sure that you only install OS-approved spyware.

braderhart··on Paper review: IPFS – Content addressed, versioned, P2P file system
I agree. I am working on an Arch distro (may roll my own for containers) that includes secure decentralized storage and configuration by default, and a federated marketplace for sharing your own local and server resources.

I'll take an open source client and changelogs with each release please.
