bpp··on Bad code may be to blame for $500M of cryptocurrency losses in seven months
People losing their life savings because they kept it under their mattress is basically the reason that banks were invented. So I suppose this has all come full circle now.
bpp··on Rent Control Needs Retirement, Not a Comeback
100% agreed. There is no "by right" construction in San Francisco. If you want to build a building that fully within the intended zoning and use of the space as currently determined by the city, it is still subject to conditional approval and even environmental review. If someone in the neighborhood objects (100% odds of that happening), then they can tie you up for years, extracting concessions (often making the buildings smaller, and unfortunately often making them uglier).

I'm particularly excited about some of the new legislation that's just been passed that allows for by right construction if a city isn't meeting its housing needs, because it just may streamline the process of getting things built here.

bpp··on SF tourist industry struggles to explain street misery to horrified visitors
It seems clear that there's a difference between a reasonable set of policy prescriptions and wholesale slaughter of human beings.
bpp··on If you multitask, so will your team
100% agree with this. I'm working with a new team and our (remote) PM loves scheduling long meetings (60 minutes when we sometimes finish in 20). I'm trying to help him see that we don't need to block out 30 or 60 minutes for a meeting just because those are easiest on Google Calendar.
bpp··on Mother Earth Mother Board (1996)
One of my favorite long form pieces of all time. I think about this piece probably once a month.
bpp··on Washington Post integrates Talk – Mozilla’s open-source commenting platform
I worked on the blog team for Barack Obama's '08 campaign. The comments section developed a culture of posting a link to their personal fundraising page as the top comment, and other commenters would then donate to it.

Someone on the team got annoyed by this so for a while we would post the top comment before publishing such that they couldn't post their personal fundraising link. Then we ran some numbers and realized how much money it was costing the campaign (a lot).

Moral of the story: comment sections are weird.

Yes, thank you!
bpp··on Why Experiment Server-Side?
My company is actually very interested in using Optimizely server-side, but unfortunately there is no Go SDK. Would love to see that happen.
bpp··on Understand Go pointers
I'm a programmer who spends all day in Go working on backend systems, but came to it from Javascript, my first language. Pointers were one of the concepts that took me the longest to understand, even having dug into them previously in the context of V8's object implementation. So I for one am grateful for this article, and just passed it on to a recent bootcamp grad at my company. Hopefully it will accelerate his learning curve.
bpp··on How Yahoo Killed Flickr (2012)
What's the backup tool you use? I've had trouble finding something that works.
bpp··on Glimmer.js: What’s the Deal with TypeScript?
Flow gets a good amount of the way there; it doesn't have quite the tooling of TypeScript but VSCode is actually able to bring a lot of that tooling to a Flow-typed codebase. Just yesterday I finished a major refactor that I'm not even sure I'd have attempted if we weren't using Flow. One giant action file feeding three insane reducers – yet I'm confident (with some testing) that it'll still work when I deploy today.
bpp··on Screwdriver: Yahoo's Continuous Delivery Build System for Dynamic Infrastructure
I wasn't responsible for setup, but we've been using Buildkite (https://buildkite.com) for our CI and it's been very nice. We run it through a Kubernetes cluster of workers and as far as I can tell it's been very flexible as to what's in a pipeline.
bpp··on What.CD is shutting down
I remember the day Oink went down. Sad, but What.cd grew out of it.
bpp··on When a crow dies, the other crows investigate the cause of death (2015)
Holy crap the photo of the volunteer in the mask is terrifying.
bpp··on Show HN: New calendar app idea
Love the animation that resolves the home icon into the menu icon.
bpp··on Sample workflow for LP digitization
Thanks for the tips - I rip vinyl for the same purpose.
bpp··on Asana Engineering Interview Guide
I had a really stellar interview experience at Asana (and, full disclosure, I didn't get an offer).

What really stood out was the pages of notes that the recruiter sent me before inviting me to apply again in a few months. I had just been through many on-site interviews at many companies, and no one came close to providing the level of feedback that Asana did. The document that I was sent can't have been too far off from the unedited notes that the interviewers shared with each other in their debrief. It really spoke to Asana's commitment to transparency and helping develop people - even those they didn't want to hire. I'm happy where I am now, but based on this experience, I would absolutely apply again in the future.

bpp··on Julie Rubicon
Very enjoyable, and almost plausible...
bpp··on America's High School Graduates Look Like Other Countries' High School Dropouts
I once had a "lifeguarding" job that was 20% making sure people didn't drown, 60% janitorial work and pool equipment maintenance with toxic chemicals, and 20% listening to snotty members of the country club say incredibly tone-deaf things. I cried more than once. The life lessons were invaluable.
bpp··on Extracting the Private Key from a TREZOR
What an excellent article. I've understood how side-channel attacks could occur, but this is the first thing that I've read that makes the link to how they actually are performed. Thank you.
bpp··on Extracting the Private Key from a TREZOR
+1
bpp··on China to take on Boeing, Airbus with new passenger jet
That would probably make me feel better about getting on one of these.
bpp··on Show HN: React for Beginners
Interesting package but I'm curious about the choice of Firebase. Seems like Firebase's data binding model is antithetical to the patterns React encourages (unidirectional flow/Flux).
bpp··on A* Search
This article was really helpful to me in understanding A*: http://www.briangrinstead.com/blog/astar-search-algorithm-in...
bpp··on Io.js Proposal: Join the Node Foundation?
Honestly not how I thought this would end up (watching it as a semi-informed observer), but glad it seems to be trending this way, given the info in the proposal.
bpp··on Ask HN: How does a beginner best spend one week of learning machine learning?
Here's a great repo from my friend Preston Parry (https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=ClimbsRocks): https://github.com/ClimbsRocks/learningmachines

It's in JavaScript, but if that works for you, clone it down and work through the instructions until it isn't broken. He created it as part of a lecture at Hack Reactor called "A Conjurer's Guide to Machine Learning," so it's a great way to get started without going too deep into the details.

bpp··on The 500-mile email (2002)
Awesome, thank you!
bpp··on The 500-mile email (2002)
Another of the 10,000 here - this is such a delightful story.

Also just discovered the "units" conversion program and disappointed that the default Mac library has only 586 units. And shockingly there don't seem to be compatible libraries out there.

bpp··on Human DNA enlarges mouse brains
Isn't this basically the plot of the movie Deep Blue Sea?
