bpfrh··on Europe braces for mobile network blackouts
Which pipelines are you talking about?

"actively block at an eu level"

Do you mean not labeling investment in nuclear as green?

Because that is very fair, if I invest my money in "green energy" I don't expect to fund nuclear.

bpfrh··on Ask HN: Why is pay so much higher in the US? (or is it?)
I would argue that covid was a special occasion, or is that always the case?

Afaik medicare only allows you to be insured if your income is less than X?

I don't know how your SSI payment structure compares to the one in my country, but isn't there a big problem with healthcare and the things and doctors it covers?

I don't think the US has no safety net, but I think on average it has a worse one than my country.

If you compare Europe as a whole I don't know, as Europe is very diverse in how they handle social care issues.

bpfrh··on Ask HN: Why is pay so much higher in the US? (or is it?)
I would say it is because of less social security.

In my country your pay will be significantly lower, but we get "free" healthcare are insured against unemployment&unable to work because of injury/sicknes, have a pension and have various social programms, etc.

bpfrh··on Nine million people in city 170km long; is world ready for a linear metropolis?
Yes, but in most other cities you can get to the point via different routes for example in my city I can reach some points with 3 different routes, with no single point of failure.
bpfrh··on Show HN: Turn spare cash into sustainable investments that directly change lives
I found it in FAQs and then Risks
bpfrh··on Ask HN: Why is there no performant remote desktop for Mac/Linux?
Last I checked it didn't work if your cpu is amd or your resolution is wrong
bpfrh··on Does monitoring your phone affect the essence of privacy?
That is not true, there have been cases where the national constitution had to be amended to follow the EU law.

An Example is the german law which did not allow women to join the millitary till 2000. After that, they had to change the constitution because it does not comply with the EU law about the same treatment of men and women:

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artikel_12a_des_Grundgesetzes_...

A country can only ignore EU law on the following grounds: - It reduces a right set in the national constitution - It goes against a right set in the national constitution(not if grants more rights or makes rights wider) - It does not fall in the competency of the EU

https://fachinfos.parlament.gv.at/politikfelder/parlament-un...

That article talks about austria and germany specifically, but it should apply to other countries as well.

bpfrh··on EU reaches deal to make USB-C a common charger for most electronic devices
I think any protocol that wants to implement a wide range of features will be complex.

Afaik if you don't need these you can just implement the parts you need e.g. charging.

bpfrh··on Big money, nuclear subsidies, and systemic corruption (2021)
That article says that they want to replace gas with coal if russia cuts of the gas supply, what else would you expect?

They also plan to change some laws to speed up transition to renewable energies: https://www.bmwk.de/Redaktion/DE/Downloads/Energie/0406_uebe...

You can argue that renewable are not deployed fast enough in germany, and there are good arguments for that, but the article isn't about that.

bpfrh··on Little rant about GNOME's file manager (a.k.a. Nautilus)
It works and I do that everytime I setup fedora.

A quick google search shows: xdg-mime default nemo.desktop inode/directory application/x-gnome-saved-search

You then have to add nemo to your applications, via alacarte.

Full answer is at: https://askubuntu.com/questions/981440/change-default-gnome-...

bpfrh··on Samsung's latest Galaxy A53 is 33% slower than the previous Galaxy A52s
About why somebody would buy it:

for me it was a combination of having a normal audiojack, smaller form factor(s9) and pricing.

I did buy the phone after it was already out for a year or two and was cheaper...

Software is ok for me, but I don't use anything from samsung except for the mail app and clock, so it is not like I would notice.

bpfrh··on PipeWire: A year in review and a look ahead
Fedora 35 on a thinkpad, somehow pulseaudio&some new kernel version makes it so that my laptop refuses to return from suspend, until I plug it in to wall power.

I didn't have to investigate further, but there is one open bug from another user: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/-/issues/13...

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=214019

Otherwise pipewire has had some bugs with audio switching and firefox at the beginning, but the last month or so has been great.

bpfrh··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
I don't think you can take one number and then say that X measure is wrong.

AGES says that over 60% of infections where in a private setting, e.g. the kids/parents get sick and then they meet friends.

https://www.ages.at/themen/krankheitserreger/coronavirus/epi...

So it seems that the ffp2 measures are working.

bpfrh··on Web3 is centralized
ahh, ok, then I can agree to some extent, altough I think the problem with product visibility and chain acceptance will make it more centralized in the long term.
bpfrh··on EU drafts plan to label gas and nuclear investments as green
I can follow that, but isn't this problematic when there is a power needed when there is no wind/solar available for recharging and you still need more? e.g. we would need a much larger energy storage, than for gas?
bpfrh··on EU drafts plan to label gas and nuclear investments as green
You are absolutely right, I somehow remembered it as the same.

Isn't my comparison totally wrong on all levels?

I compared batteries, which are storage(or "power plants") with the price of the thing the gas power plant uses.

A better comparison would be the cost of battery storage, cost of filling it up, versus building a gas power plant and then producing the same energy.

If I find a good article on that I will link it.

bpfrh··on Web3 is centralized
I would say that depends on the country you live in, but essentially you are saying web3 somehow doesn't get regulated and therefore is better.

The reason you wouldn't be able to simply start a website offering people loans would be because of laws, I see no argument that if you somehow use a different technology it is suddenly legal.

bpfrh··on Web3 is centralized
No they don't gatekeep the information, your information is always available to you.

Maybe they don't offer the information in the specific way that you want, but that can also happen in web3(Propertery API, OAUTH2 which means you have to have static ip server for authentification,etc.).

You pay for the convenience of having your data aggregated in the specified format.

That aside, banks in the EU are forced to offer api services, as specified in the PSD2 standard.

I just don't see how doing everything in a web3 solves anything better than regulations.

bpfrh··on EU drafts plan to label gas and nuclear investments as green
Gas based Power plants are for providing capacity quickly when needed, and the cost is good compared to lithium batteries:

1 KW Gas is 0,0639€ 1 KW Lithium Battery is ~105€

There is an incoming lithium shortage which means either the price will rise sharply, or you have to build other types of batteries.

bpfrh··on Web3 is centralized
That is not exclusiv to web3 and is not new.

If I buy a house, I can take a credit on that house.

If I bought some stock, banks will let me take a loan on them afaik.

I can also borrow some money and choose something expensive that I own for a collateral.

Maybe crypto makes the last one easier, but then it will lead to a lot of fraud, because veryifing that the item I set as collateral is the difficult and expensive part.

bpfrh··on A super-spreading event of Omicron amongst triple-vaccinated healthcare workers
They suspendend a batch of the vaccines, they still continue the vaccination of the children.

They are even thinking about using that specific batch for adults.

bpfrh··on A super-spreading event of Omicron amongst triple-vaccinated healthcare workers
If they get covid there is a chance of long covid as well as Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

There are afaik no contraindications for children with the vaccine, so why not vaccinate them?

bpfrh··on Princeton researcher apologizes for GDPR/CCPA email study
I think the argument would be that they send those request knowing that the sites do not have information stored.

I think a ethical good study would be if they requested users to request their data from sites they use.

bpfrh··on “Open source” is broken
I always think about paying for the open source software that I use and I try to be more dilligent in paying for it.

The problem for me is, that while calculating how much I theoretically should spend on the OS I use for example (gnome+fedora+linux kernel, etc), it would be actually cheaper to pay for a windows version+microsoft cloud/office suite or switch to the apple ecosystem.

Same applies for programming frameworks I use.

Doesn't that mean opensource is inherently impossible to use ethically as a private person?

So how do you decide on how to deep and how much one should pay?

bpfrh··on Hackers are spamming businesses’ receipt printers with ‘antiwork’ manifestos
Hmmm, maybe I had bad examples, my point was that we rely a lot in our daily life that other people do their job right and that even if they don't there will be checks in place that catch problems.

We even rely on organizations and parties to lobby for our interests.

So we kind of accept that we need to rely on other people.

I probably should have said "We relay that the people in the restaurant know how to cook and keep their ingriedients clean and fresh and we rely on checks that catches mistakes"?

bpfrh··on Our main problem in health policy is overemphasis on medicine (2007)
I do not disagree with your point that the vaccine does not work on people who have an immundefect.

But that point was never in dispute, at least not in my comment.

Of course it would be great if the vaccine would also stop the transmission, but even if not, if less people get sick, less people will spread it, which will lead to smaller clusters.

It also allows the medical system to keep on working and providing the best medical help to people who do get sick.

Of course covid-19 is still an ongoing situation, viruses mutate, situations and recommendations change, but I don't see any indication that we can protect the population and even more the vulnerable population without a high enough vaccination rate.

Edit: Wording

bpfrh··on Hackers are spamming businesses’ receipt printers with ‘antiwork’ manifestos
We rely on the restaurant not serving bad food because of regulation.

We rely on good safety standards in a workplace, so that people working in chemical factories do not die from breathing in toxic fumes.

So to be clear, we rely on other people and other people doing things for us all the time, so the discussion is not about relying on other people, but in this case what are work conditions which are acceptable.

I think that fire at will for example is a bad idea, but I don't live in the USA, so my view comes from a different perspective.

bpfrh··on Our main problem in health policy is overemphasis on medicine (2007)
But vaccines ARE the miraculouse cure, at least in my country the high case load is because of unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated people.

If about 80% of the population took it, we wouldn't have any problem.

Of course previous health issues matter when you get sick and of course we should encourage healthier living, but we won't change this in the next 6 Months, for that we have a vaccine.
