boxerab··on GitHub Copilot as open source code laundering?
"lay at the beach"

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

boxerab··on John Carmack on JPEG
For JPEG, if image is encoded using resolution progression, then decoder can not decode using quality progression (where image quality improves with each new piece of the image) and vice versa. With JPEG 2000, the decoder can decide which progression it wishes to use at decode time - by resolution, by quality, by component, or by spatial region.
boxerab··on John Carmack on JPEG
The issue you are facing with OpenJPEG has nothing to do with PHR, (which isn't actually "personal health information"), but the fact that the library doesn't decode truncated images. The standard is designed for best-effort decoding when there are corrupt or missing packets, but the implementation errors out when it detects this.

boxerab··on The Eccentric Lives of Steinhaus, Banach and Ulam (2014)
Steinhaus, Ulam and many other mathematicians in the Lviv school were Jewish, and had to flee or go into hiding to survive the German occupation. Interesting that there is no mention of this in the article.

yes, the sense of entitlement of some people is very surprising.
boxerab··on CineForm Goes Open Source
What would be the use case for GPU encoding? Aren't the CPU encoders fast enough on 8-core or higher ?
boxerab··on The Unlikely Return of Cat Stevens
Yes, I found that quite strange too. I would not consider him actually returned until he apologizes for his support for the death sentence on Rushdie.
boxerab··on A startup founder and ex-Facebook engineer’s story of the BSD + Patents license
By the way, they also recently changed the license on ZSTD compression codec to dual BSD / GPL v2, after complaints by user community.
boxerab··on Google is trying to patent video compression use of Asymmetric Numeral Systems
Thanks, very interesting take on the matter. Would you mind explaining "...it has to code everything in reverse. The latter especially is a technical showstopper. " ?

boxerab··on Opus 1.2 Released
Yes. They have applied for a patent on ANS and video compression - ANS is one of the biggest advances in lossless encoding in the last 10 years. The inventor wants to keep it freely available, has helped Google for three years to incorporate ANS in AV1 - their reward is to try to patent his invention. More details here:

Any time you watch a movie at the cinema, JPEG 2000 is in use, decoding the film.

Regarding the effective monopoly on high end, this will change next month with release of Vega card.

Let's compare notes end of next year :) I think things will be quite different by then.
boxerab··on The New Intel: How Nvidia Went from Powering Video Games to Revolutionizing AI
Puff piece. Yes, Nvidia dominates at the moment, but as many have said, this could easily change with a resurgent AMD. They have made all the right moves, IMHO, since Lisa Su took over:

0. Finally paying attention to software part of equation : hardware for compute has always been very good

1. drivers are now excellent

2. whole line of GCN devices (since 2012) are supported and still optimized, unlike notorious Nvidia nerfing of older cards

3. Has x86 license - if Zen is a success, can build high-bandwidth fabric between CPU and GPU, unmatchable by nVidia except on exotic Power8 arch.

4. new project focusing on HPC on Linux

5. they keep pushing OpenCL, which will win over Nvidia-only CUDA

6. New tools to semi-automatically port CUDA code to run on their hardware.

Well, here's hoping AMD gives them a run for their money in 2016 </fanboy> 6.

boxerab··on What It Takes to Build True FPGA as a Service
Yes, agree. Also, SDKs are quite expensive - while GPU vendors give theirs away for free. This might be one reason for relatively low adoption vs GPU.
boxerab··on Vulnerabilities induced by migrating to 64-bit platforms
amen!
boxerab··on GPUs for Google Cloud Platform
:) I've only been deeply involved with compute for the past two years, so I am still an optimist. I think AMD pretty much has no choice but to get it right this time: they need server and HPC dough to stay afloat.
boxerab··on GPUs for Google Cloud Platform
You should check out ROCm

They are revamping their entire linux stack for HPC, heterogenous compute.

Very very happy to finally see AMD GPUs in cloud.

boxerab··on GitKraken: git GUI Client for Windows Mac and Linux
If you're on windows, GitExtensions is pretty awesome. (open source too). I made a donation to the author because that client saved me from a team mutiny after I introduced git on the command line.

Thanks, Trevor, that makes a lot of sense.

With the rise of streaming video, there are new players entering the broadcast market, so there is an opportunity to sell an inexpensive compression/decompression system for integration into these new systems. The time to develop a JPEG 2000 codec from scratch is quite large, so decreasing time to market is another part of my value proposition.

On the server side, it looks like my focus should be on total cost.

On the client side, for example digital cinema post-production, a user typically has only a single box, so speed is important in this case.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your feedback.

Aaron
