bound008··on Menstruation Apps Are Sharing Users' Data
For those bringing up HIPAA I hate to let you know that none of these apps are covered by HIPAA, and none of them can be fined under HIPAA.

If your friend tells you they have a disease, and you tell someone else, are you breaking HIPAA? No.

In order to break HIPAA you have to first be a covered entity. An example of a covered entity is a Doctor (or provider).

If you tell Google or Facebook that you have some kind of condition, that information is not covered by HIPAA because they are not a medical provider, and therefore have no legal obligation to keep that information private.

bound008··on Facebook scans system libraries on Android and uploads them to their server
Which episode? I can’t manage to find it.
bound008··on Apple will soon treat online web tracking the same as a security vulnerability
> With all their cash they could’ve bought a bank and issued the card themselves.

In the US, you can't buy a bank without becoming a bank. Becoming a bank involves a lot of additional regulation.

bound008··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2019)
I was there from the early days, but could not recommend working with this team enough.

Steli believes in continuous self improvement and I feel fortunate enough to consider him as a very close (pun intended) friend.

The team has seen at least one member leave to start a startup and then return years later. This is unheard of at this small of a startup.

Also years ago I convinced the poster (philfreo) to join. :)

bound008··on Apple Sign In
Free disposable forwarding email addresses that you can turn off. Built on the startup bus years ago: http://boun.cr

MailGun ( a YC company ) was providing their API for free, until another company came along and offered to take over the project. All of the code and design was built on a bus from CA to ATX.

(and one of the team members met their co-founder on that (StartupBus) trip and went through YC. I believe they are a unicorn now)

bound008··on Travels with a Pi (2018)
Thanks! Wasn't sure if any of these solutions were easily achieved on all of these ARM devices. Would love to hear any experience on performance, although when you are on a Pi Zero, that doesn't seem too important. At least I can move my PiHole from docker to a fun little device that can display stats on an OLED screen!
bound008··on Travels with a Pi (2018)
How do you achieve FDE on a Pi type device? The author states the companies strict data policies, but seems the solution is carrying unencrypted data, and a modifiable boot environment in their wallet?

Not trying to point out any shortcomings, I honestly want to know if people reading this have a solution. Many people are relying on Pi(s) to self host data to keep it secure, despite the Pi as a platform not offering any protection in this regard.

EDIT: (Forgot to mention the Microsoft folding keyboard as the "best" of the super portable keyboards, which is still not that great, but has saved me when my MacBook has developed stuck keys)

bound008··on Stripe Issuing – An API for creating physical and virtual cards
Check out Capital One. They have the ability to have multiple virtual cards that you can turn on or off.

bound008··on How Automakers Invented the Crime of “Jaywalking”
This was covered in a very entertaining show called Adam Ruins Everything. Each episode has footnotes for the sources:

http://www.trutv.com/shows/adam-ruins-everything/blog/adams-...

Interestingly enough, their source was an article from Vox from 2007: https://cdn1.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/2934608/N...

EDIT: the article references the original author's work and the book (also cited as a source by the show) http://www.amazon.com/Fighting-Traffic-American-Inside-Techn...

bound008··on I wrote a script that wins the majority of HQ Trivia games
Also, for iOS devs, remember that you can detect mirroring, and even display a different UI on the "external" screen. In the case of HQ, you could enhance UX by putting the @traptrebek on the external screen while the question stays on the phone.
bound008··on Termination of StartCom business
This is more common than you think.
bound008··on Finance information on Google
Why can't they just create your profile from reading your GMail? Or even better, from just reading the framebuffer of your Android device or Chrome browser?
bound008··on Justice Department suing AT&T to block $85B bid for Time Warner
Just wanted to point out that this does not include Time Warner Cable which was already acquired by Spectrum. (And yes, that merger made bills go up. Even the customer service reps admit it)
bound008··on Apple’s Struggle to Get the iPhone X to Market on Time
This kind of information is relevant to the public markets, so it is relevant to Bloomberg.

(irrespective of the overall quality decline in tech reporting)

bound008··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Vagrant for development environments?
Docker
bound008··on US Senate votes to undo FCC internet privacy rules
Not entirely sure how this works, but there could be a new bill that reverses this to allow them. This bill prevents them from independently creating "enacting" similar protections. A future bill could cancel this provision, or enact new protections that could be enforced.

Either way, it is frightening to think about this passing.

bound008··on Cold Does Not Increase Odds of Catching Cold (2016)
Is the correct conclusion?

Cold weather does not cause a cold, but increases the statistical probability of contracting one.

bound008··on The Garden: Instacart's Physical Staging Environment
Michael Drexler gave the same advice to Steve Jobs before they opened their first Apple Store. They instantly realized they got the whole thing wrong.
bound008··on Ask HN: Anything we can do for those impacted by the US immigration ban?
The ACLU just solved this in surprisingly quick speed with lawyers and money.

Give as much money as possible to the ACLU. On "Adam Ruins Everything" he explains that sometimes money is the most effective way to contribute to charity is money. (Try to balance your giving with the EFF as well).

bound008··on Show HN: Invite friends to SSH into your laptop using their GitHub handle
Note to the author: Please don't have a command line flag that either means ( a valid local posix path ) or ( a username/handle from a specific online service that will be fetched over the network ). *nix cli tools are supposed to be unambiguous. I'd fork/issue/patch it, but I don't have a need to let people ssh into my any of my boxes. Just posting this here because its a valid learning opportunity that making something "easy" is not always the right choice in a cli tool, and that namespaces are important. What if I have a file named the same as a github user? Which thing will work? Will that behavior change unexpectedly? Best to make them different flags.
bound008··on Ask HN: Who productively writes code on their smartphone? How?
How has the OpenPandora fared with time? Been thinking for a while about grabbing this for writing notes, and playing old emulated games, (as well as ssh+tmux+neovim)
bound008··on Ask HN: Who productively writes code on their smartphone? How?
I just wish Prompt would add "mouse" support so I could scroll my vim panes and/or drag around the dividers. I asked their support and they said no plans for that ever.
bound008··on AWS IoT Button
FWIW I tried following the instructions with a normal branded dash, and it is clear that the IoT button has a different firmware.

Differences: * Amazon ConfigureMe network uses WPA2 for the IoT button. No encryption for the branded button. * IoT button has extra fields (according to the documentation) that the branded does not. They are for a certificate, private key, REST endpoint, region, and a checkbox to agree to TOC.

bound008··on Google I/O 2016
Is the entire event going to be outside? Or are they going to use a tent in the vast parking lot space like they do for festivals?
bound008··on The new Ford, a Silicon Valley software company
does anyone else want to talk about the elephant in the room? the eMate 300 sitting next to a HTC Vive VR Headset?
bound008··on SFMTA publishes list of names with license plates
This data can't be real. It says Steve Jobs has not one, but three license plates.
bound008··on NetBSD support for psutil
great work @grodola !!
bound008··on Glacier Costlier Than S3 for Small Files
AWS has a wizard for bucket storage policy where they tell you this information explicitly with a big warning sign.
bound008··on G is for Google

bound008··on Securing Email Communications from Facebook
One of the engineers behind this is a YC Founder of this company: http://techcrunch.com/2011/03/21/sendoid-finally-sharing-big...

This is likely an attempt by motivated individuals inside an unstructured place like Facebook to get a feature they want out to the public, and less driven by some PM who wants to compete with others.
