bouke··on Run a C# file directly using dotnet run app.cs
That's great; now I can finally have scripts with type-safety. Note that on macOS the shebang either reads `#!/usr/local/share/dotnet/dotnet run` or `#!/usr/bin/env -S dotnet run`.
bouke··on Run a C# file directly using dotnet run app.cs
Not GP, but can confirm on my M3 Max using the hello world sample:

  $ time dotnet run hello-world.cs > /dev/null

  real 0m1.161s
  user 0m0.849s
  sys 0m0.122s

  $ time dotnet run hello-world.cs > /dev/null

  real 0m0.465s
  user 0m0.401s
  sys 0m0.065s
bouke··on The principles of database design, or, the Truth is out there
That natural key isn’t guaranteed to be unique.
bouke··on CarPlay Ultra, the next generation of CarPlay, begins rolling out today
Ugh it looks pretty hideous to me, i wouldn’t want my instrument cluster to look like that. The styling of for example BMW’s instrument cluster looks so much better than this.
bouke··on A Formal Analysis of Apple's iMessage PQ3 Protocol [pdf]
How do you make backups of your data; e.g. Photos, Notes and Messages?
bouke··on eBPF Mystery: When is IPv4 not IPv4? When it's pretending to be IPv6
Reminds me of a time where someone stored the md5 hash of a password as a string by throwing away all non-ascii bytes; so roughly half the bytes.
bouke··on Samsung is paying $350M for audio brands B&W, Denon, Marantz and Polk
The ability to control what's playing on other devices (e.g. HomePod / Apple TV) is also available from the Music app on Mac.
bouke··on Samsung is paying $350M for audio brands B&W, Denon, Marantz and Polk
They have this feature, it is called Hand-off I think. It works between iPhones and HomePods. Additionally there’s “control other devices”, which allows controlling the music played on other devices. That is between most Apple device categories, although I’m unsure about Mac support for it.
bouke··on A steam locomotive from 1993 broke my yarn test
So the real problem is that Jest just executes to whatever `sl` resolves. The fix they intent to release doesn't address that, but it tries to recognise the train steaming through. How is this acceptable behaviour from a test runner, as it looks like a disaster to happen. What if I have `alias sl=rm -rf /`, as one typically wants to have such a command close at hand?
bouke··on A glitch in an online survey replaced the word 'yes' with 'forks'
Also related and because of the French: UTC. It was chosen as a concession between the logical English CUT or French TUC. Also the two are backwards, which I think is not really a coincidence due to word ordering rules in French.
bouke··on How your Mac can update macOS when you don’t want it to
So they clicked ‘try tonight’ in the dialog asking ‘Updates Available - Do you want to restart to install now or try tonight?’. And then macOS did just that. I don’t quite see how that isn’t user-initiated.

Why would they have ‘Download new updates when available’ enabled when they were not planning on installing these updates? I assume that having that enabled causes that dialog to appear in the first place.

bouke··on EU's AltStore Gets First Native iOS Pornography App
The app screenshots shown in AlStore are quite sfw: https://cdn.fastpixel.io/fp/ret_img+v_8beb+w_2000+h_1125+q_l...
bouke··on Some terminal frustrations
Or database clients (e.g. psql) using `-h` for the host argument. I get it, but I don't like it.
bouke··on Show HN: Spotify and Apple Health data as art
Looks interesting. Has an off-by-one error though; YTD steps receipt starts with December 2023. I'm in UTC+1.
bouke··on AI company that made robots for children went bust and now the robots are dying
> and if you bought the device on a payment plan it’s out of their hands

Woah. So you'd have to keep paying for this now-defunct plastic piece of garbage?

bouke··on What does this button do? – My new car has a mysterious and undocumented switch
The switch is probably for tax reasons, to record whether you’re making a business vs personal trip. Personal trips go towards the 500 km allowance before the car is seen as indirect salary and should be taxed as such. Setting it to personal might also disable the tracking for privacy reasons.
bouke··on Gitlab makes more money than you think
The actual title is more relevant: “GitLab sees traction as it competes against GitHub, Atlassian”. GitLab is apparently benefitting from Atlassian killing their on-prem offering.
bouke··on Large French Alpine ski resort to close in face of shrinking snow season
> has 55km (35 miles) of slopes, three chairlifts and 10 drag lifts

That’s not large, but rather small.

> The loss-making Alpe du Grand Serre has also suffered from ageing infrastructure and a lack of investment over the past 40 years. > The local authority has spent nearly €3m since 2021 on a project that would keep the resort open all year round, attracting visitors with hiking and bike paths, but said it did not have the money to continue with it for the final two years before completion.

So no investments for a long time and not sufficient budget to diversify. Looks like they were lacking any longterm survival plans.

> Alpe du Grand Serre, a collection of six villages at an altitude of 1,368 metres, (…)

Global warming will put a lot of winter sports resorts at lower altitudes out of snow business. Diversify or face a similar faith.

bouke··on Uber charges more if you have credits in your account
Probably Net Promotor Score.
bouke··on Who uses Accept-Language header?
`Accept-Language` contain both language and locale. Depending on your app you might have supported languages or language/locale combinations. When there's no exact match after step 2, you'll want to do a partial-match on only the language.

bouke··on I added a ratgdo to my garage door, and I don't know why I waited so long
> Of course, while the ratgdo is indeed a local device, there’s still a large and obvious cloud dependency in my home automation setup: HomeKit itself.

HomeKit works on the local network, it is per design not using “the cloud”. Only if you are not on your local network, it’ll use iCloud to communicate with a bridge (AppleTV / HomePod mini) that is on the local network.

bouke··on About the browser choice screen in the EU
I'm worried about Chrome's web dominance: they are already dominating the desktop web. With these changes I can only imagine that they will do the same for the mobile web with these changes. Apple's mobile market share in EU is way lower than Android's; web developers will start caring even less about (mobile) Safari.
bouke··on EU: Users who refuse scanning to be prevented from sharing photos and links
So what about our fundamental rights, article 7?

> CHARTER OF FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

> (2012/C 326/02)

> Article 7

> Respect for private and family life

> Everyone has the right to respect for his or her private and family life, home and communications.

bouke··on Show HN: ChatGPT UI for rabbit holes
You can turn the haptic feedback off in the app, which is what I did. It doesn’t convey useful feedback, just lain annoying.
bouke··on Ask HN: WhatsApp, now integral to our lives, provides no tech support. Ideas?
Or look at it from a different angle: at what scale (ie. 1bn. users) does it become possible to stop to offer support? Simply don’t care about those users with issues or questions.
bouke··on Germany has too many solar panels, pushed energy prices into negative territory
Same over here in The Netherlands. We have subsidised solar panels and now have an abundance of solar energy, but only during sunny days. The remainder of the time we still have to burn gas and coal. There is some nuclear, which we’ll need much more of if we want to stop with fossil fuels. Meanwhile policy is still heavily pushing for electrification while the power grid is overloaded and will take years and billions to address.
bouke··on New MacBook Setup
My setup would take weeks to reproduce, I think. So many small tweaks, configuration and extensions that I have accrued over the years. I would dread starting over, which is why I’m very happy with Migration Assistant that helped me migrate to various new machines over 10+ years.
bouke··on Introducing Copilot+ PCs
Apparently Azure is now going out fashion, as they’ve renamed Azure AD to Entra ID.
bouke··on Did we lose our way in making efficient software?
When the first MacBooks came out with a Secure Enclave, Keychain was just unworkable slow. You had to type your search query elsewhere and then paste it in, or you’d be looking at a beachball for minutes. Took them a major OS X release before it became somewhat bearable again.

The new Passwords is a joke. UX errors all over the place, modal based view with a toggle to start editing. If you need to enter a password in another area of System Preferences, you need to back out of the auth flow, switch to Passwords and copy the credentials over to a temporary file.
