bottled_poe··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
I'm working to make private hosting easier. I've been running a software development agency in Melbourne for 10+ years and have been building this platform in the background to help automate and standardise the hosting needs for our clients.

We're now getting ready to launch a web portal for others to manage their own private hosting in a simpler way. The product also includes a directory of off-the-shelf applications which can be launched in a few clicks (eg. Deepseek chatbot).

If you're interested in being part of our closed-Beta in March, reach out! (e: james at below domain)

bottled_poe··on Open-R1: an open reproduction of DeepSeek-R1
It will be very interesting to see if they can reproduce a similar model on the shoestring budget claimed by Deepseek.
bottled_poe··on Ask HN: Organize local communities without Facebook?
Exactly, is OP really the one who should be influencing others preferences? Most couldn’t give two shits about the technological perils that await them just over the horizon - and should you really be the one to inform them of those horrors? Just relax - and embrace the book of faces. The movement will be swift and relatively painless, mostly.
bottled_poe··on LLMs are everything that it wrong in computing
Should have reviewed their content with chatgpt before posting. Maybe next time.
bottled_poe··on Veo 2: Our video generation model
Comments like this one are so predictable and incredulous. As if the current state of the art is the final form of this technology. This is just getting started. Big facepalm.
bottled_poe··on Show HN: Outerbase Studio – Open-Source Database GUI
Could you please add an option to enforce the use of transactions within the SQL input?
bottled_poe··on Nvidia to join Dow Jones Industrial Average, replacing Intel
It’s interesting. They have had plenty of time and resources available to mount solid competition. Why haven’t they? Is it a talent hiring problems or some more fundamental problem with their engineering processes? The writing has been on the wall for gpgpu for more than 10 years. Definitely enough time to catch up.
bottled_poe··on Apple mobile processors are now made in America by TSMC
Someone must police the rules of the market I suppose? Also, a truly free market benefits those who own the market, no?

Interesting way to frame these management tactics, but the conclusions don’t seem to have much support from the rest of the context.

Seems like fraud would be a more likely charge.
bottled_poe··on ChatGPT for Teams
We shouldn’t, but we do. Get over it and accept reality.
bottled_poe··on Bad scientific code beats code following "best practices" (2014)
any code base that evolves over time will have complexity. It can be either manageable or unmanageable complexity. Either sacrifice maintainability for early development velocity, or plan for medium-to-long term velocity. You CAN have both velocity and maintainability, but the engineers will be expensive. Fast, good, cheap - pick two. A tale as old as bits.
bottled_poe··on Ask HN: What are your founder's resolutions for 2024?
Is there any data that this is “what’s working?”. Seems the most engaged are the least influential.
bottled_poe··on Build a startup or side project faster with these SaaS templates
When there are consequences for poor quality (security, negligence, reliability, efficiency, etc). When engineering standards are regulated. When quality meaningfully impacts revenue. Take your pick.
bottled_poe··on Most companies using AI are 'lighting money on fire,' says Matthew Prince
That’s a big if, but does seem plausible for well-founded use cases.
