bosch_mind··on Show HN: I built a Terraform State remote backend on Cloudflare Workers
Neat but also… why not Cloudflare R2? An already fast and durable state store compatible with TF?
bosch_mind··on Show HN: Site2pdf
can you elaborate on the execution failures?

If you’re referring to single pages taking too long and wanting to chunk the processing of a single page, consider cloudflare durable objects as a coordination point for a url.

You can parallelize chunks and track completion in DO. When the last chunk is complete, you can merge. Unlike KV, DO is strongly consistent.

bosch_mind··on Show HN: RAG on HN comments in 34 LOC
I’m new to RAG, but have been learning about it lately for fun and it’s pretty incredible as a concept.

What are your thoughts around these frameworks like llama index and langchain? Being a seasoned engineer, it seems like a ridiculous amount of fluff around an already simple process.

bosch_mind··on Show HN: I built a Switchless eSIM that works in 200 locations and regions
Can elaborate on why they might do this versus your approach?

Also, what does it take to become a company that can acquire esims?

bosch_mind··on Ask HN: Are you aware of a sane path to selfhosted email server?
Did this for several months. People over talk about how hard it is with no experience doing it. Honestly, it’s a piece of cake.

The downside is that it’s time consuming because like any system, you must maintain and update it.

I self hosted mailcow on a VPS with a service similar to sendgrid and Postmark (forgetting the same now) for outbound email to avoid the blacklisted IP problem.

For inbound routing, I used Cloudflare DNS and setup aliases in Mailcow (nice UI). You can use any client you want against your mail server. It’s just an IP and a port (or domain).

I did it for awhile because I was already selfhosting a lot. However, 6 months in I was like.. I need to go outside, I’m tired of debugging mail problems. Back to Gmail. Maybe there is a happier middle ground

bosch_mind··on Hotel WiFi JavaScript Injection (2012)
Ah thats clever
bosch_mind··on Hotel WiFi JavaScript Injection (2012)
Anything you can do at the network level that can MITM in 2024 for TLS without the client needing a custom cert? I assume no, but curious anyway
bosch_mind··on Opengist: Open-source alternative to GitHub Gists
Check out Cloudflare Workers. Supports Python and has AI integrations
bosch_mind··on Challenging software projects some programmers should try
Personal growth and enjoyment mainly. Understanding how languages work at a deeper level. Pure enjoyment of learning my craft as is any project I do involving programming outside of work.

When you understand your tools, you understand your job more. You also can appreciate things more from a different perspective.

bosch_mind··on Challenging software projects some programmers should try
It might sound humorous, but I’m not 10x programmer. An educational lexer and interpreter is something you can study and implement in 2 weekends. Assemblers are very very small amounts of code that spit out predefined binary from already made instructions (chip—8 is good for this). I think there should be MORE resources around simplifying what people think is incredibly complex. Production grade compiler tools like LLVM are incredibly complicated, but learning how the systems work isnt. While your comment is humorous, it’s toxic for those who actually want to understand fundamentals well
bosch_mind··on Challenging software projects some programmers should try
To add onto this list (unless I missed it), I would recommend interpreter, compiler and assembler. An interpreter is a fun way to learn a new language and can be done creatively and artistically which allows you to exercise the art of programming in expressive ways. Lexing for optimal string manipulation and parsing, AST construction for fun ways of building and creating the grammar and interpretation which can be done any number of ways.

Also, it’s not as hard as it seems if compilers in college was your last attempt in this area.

- crafting interpreters

- writing and interpreter/compiler in Go

Both good books on the domain for an amateur compiler writer.

For lower level assembler and chip design stuff/logic gates etc. obviously I recommend Nand2Tetris

bosch_mind··on Ask HN: How did you build feature flags?
We do this at $BIG_TECH. Nothing too crazy. I should add that it tied into our company user directory though, so toggles can happen per user as well and support multiple data types
bosch_mind··on Ask HN: Have you ever had to set up an RCP/gRPC server? Why?
You must be a joy to work with /s
bosch_mind··on Ask HN: What books have you found understandable during serious depression?
Goldfinch is one of my favorites, so let me chime in as I’ve read during serious depression and understand the struggle.

- tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow

- 1Q84

- After Dark

- secret history (author of goldfinch)

- never let me go (bit sad-ish)

Note: I explicitly filtered my reads to be things I enjoyed during depressive states. Lots of other books I read during that period I didn’t enjoy/made depression worse

bosch_mind··on Deploying Web Apps with Caddy: A Beginner's Guide Caddy
Writing Go > Lua and C for extensibility these days
bosch_mind··on Deploying Web Apps with Caddy: A Beginner's Guide Caddy
Can you speak more to usecases that aren’t fulfilled by Caddy? Also, any ideas if performance matches NGINX at scale?
bosch_mind··on Unicomp's "New" Model M Keyboard
I ordered one of these and returned it instantly. Very cheap and weird compared to nice and modern mechanical keyboards you get today. I really wanted an original model M but didn’t want to deal with weird ps2 conversion stuff.
bosch_mind··on P2pcf: P2P WebRTC via Cloudflare Workers
I suggest you review the definition of serverless.

Serverless computing is a cloud computing execution model in which the cloud provider allocates machine resources on demand

bosch_mind··on Show HN: I made a tool to compare time zones
Typing Arizona yields no results
bosch_mind··on Show HN: 10 years later, I've revamped GamePad Viewer, check it out
Ay mate. In the flood of info on the web today, the average attention span is a measly like 5 seconds. Your landing page is a black screen with a sign up button and no info. I’d hate for your hard work to go unnoticed, but it’s not a captivating welcome page
bosch_mind··on Ask HN: What did you buy or considering buying this Black Friday?
My friend has one, it looks great
bosch_mind··on Citadel CEO Ken Griffin: Remote work makes it easier to fire people
I’d happily tell Ken Griffin he’s full of shit to his face.
bosch_mind··on How Bear does analytics with CSS
If 10 users share an IP on a shared VPN around the globe and hit your site, you only count that as 1? What about corporate networks, etc? IP is a bad indicator
bosch_mind··on Ask HN: How to survive indefinite DDoS attack?
Who would be more advanced than Cloudflare?
bosch_mind··on I Won't Use Next.js
I dabble in UI and just started a new next project and it really kind of sucks now.

What do you recommend?

bosch_mind··on Fewer Californians are moving to Texas, but more are going to FL and AZ
Agreed. I live in US and it’s so bizarre that people walk around with rifles on their back.
bosch_mind··on Fewer Californians are moving to Texas, but more are going to FL and AZ
CA is insanely expensive, however I left AZ and came here to a very beautiful city. I don’t regret it, but I won’t be here long term. It truly is a place for the ultra wealthy, at least where I’m at.

My partner and I bring in around $350k and it’s barely cutting it here

bosch_mind··on The Awk Programming Language, Second Edition
For any folks who appreciate old UNIX things, check out Unix a history and memoir. It’s written by the one and only - Kernighan and he talks about people like Aho. Awesome book
bosch_mind··on Show HN: I made a website that lets YouTubers make money from fan questions
Are some of these accounts fake? Ie - I see questions for a YouTube channel that has no videos and 2 subscribers. I doubt people would actually ask this channel questions let alone pay to do so.

Correct me off I’m wrong. Either way, not a bad idea. Good luck

bosch_mind··on Tech layoffs exceed 240k so far in 2023, 50% more than 2022
How do people think jobs in more complex backend, large-scale distributed systems roles will do in the near to distant future?
