boromi··on A new theory sheds light on the emergence of life’s complexity
Yep. Some of the headlines are particularly egregious. https://www.bing.com/news/search?q=%22jeremy+england%22&qs=n...

I suspect he is up for tenure review :P His proposals are not knew just spun differently. You can find critics from other physics/chemist regarding their suspicions as well.

Does this not support issues and comments? If not those would be welcome additions.

"Community is (apparently) a bunch of dicks."

Not everyone (most are kind and welcoming), but yeah that has been my experience as well with some members.

I'm going to need to see this code in practise to believe it.

Still no static compilation, being able to make executables would be huge.

boromi··on Atom 1.9 and 1.10 beta
Yes. I bought a new workstation to run Atom.
boromi··on Atom 1.9 and 1.10 beta
Wholeheartedly agree. I just tested this new version out.

I really keep trying to use Atom, but it's just unacceptable currently when compared to Sublime. Very slow startups and laggy. This new version takes 5-10 seconds before I can start coding, that's far too slow. With every update I keep hoping things are faster, but only marginally so. VS code loads in less than 3 seconds and is a lot more snappy.

I don't understand why they don't address this issue as the highest priority problem. It's by far the most complained about issue. If the MS guys can make VS code launch that fast I don't see anything holding back Atom (save maybe coffeescript :P (tongue in cheek)).

boromi··on Show HN: LaTeX Boilerplates – Plain-Text Document Production System
It sounds like a good idea, until you need to write advanced mathematical documents, in which case it all breaks down.

Any tips to make a latex pandoc workflow viable for advanced math documents with custom commands and such. I.e. using the mathtools package and various advanced latex math commands?

boromi··on Announcing TypeScript 0.9.1
The largest project I know using it from what anders has mentioned is xbox music, which is about half a million lines of typescript. In addition the IE11 debugger also is written in typescript.

boromi··on A rich new JavaScript code editor spreading to several Microsoft web sites
I really enjoy typing with this text editor. It feels just right: nice colorscheme, nice cursor width, nice bracket matching and code highlighting. I hope MS makes a native windows 8 app using the code editor or give it under a free licence it so that other can make the app.
boromi··on Scoping in CoffeeScript and JavaScript
For all the cases I have checked the type checker is extremely impressive. I have even checked whether types flow through promises! and with underscore.js and it has not failed me yet, it is extremely robust.

But aside from that, the most useful feature of typescript to me has been the productivity gains, just checkout: http://www.typescriptlang.org/Playground/ You can now have an IDE that provides useful information about clases/objects/etc. (imagine if javascript actually had proper codecompletion and intellisense)

boromi··on Scoping in CoffeeScript and JavaScript
I have never understood why anyone would bother with coffeescript. Afterall it just transpiles to javascript. If you know javascript what's the point in a new language that offers nothing additional to javascript other than syntactic sugar. Not to mention the coffeescript's poor compiler design.

To me typescript beats dart and coffeescript by miles. I don't have to use a new syntax or figure out the idiosyncrasies of a new language, it provides the type safety and tools that I need for javascript apps without reinventing the wheel in a very simple and intuitive form.

It solves the problems that javascript doesn't, type-safety. In fact I can't recall another language that is dynamic but also statically typed.
