bornfreddy··on Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests
Actually... Server can detect if you are piping or not and serve a modified version for inspection.

But really, there is no reason not to use prebuilt packages for distribution. Curlpiping needs to die.

bornfreddy··on PostmarketOS is rebranding as Nura
Why don't you? No time like now.
bornfreddy··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
> Nowadays I would attribute their response to chatbots considering how elaborated and friendly, but yet totally useless their messages were, but this was before LLMs

Outsourcing was a predecessor of LLMs.

bornfreddy··on Good people refuse to do bad things
Also, how does this number (53%) compare to pre-LLM numbers?
bornfreddy··on Good people refuse to do bad things
That is a good point, but the problem with ML/AI is that anyone can do it. It will be difficult to stem this tide.
bornfreddy··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
Which doesn't mean they didn't escape.
bornfreddy··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
Agree! My only concern is - is the judicial system fast enough, and resilient enough? Or will these creators get "off the hook" by using their agents to find loopholes, sway public opinion or even convince Trump to grant them immunity?

Still, I have no idea why OpenAI & co. are not being sued for these hacks.

bornfreddy··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
"Move fast and break things" was supposed to break your own things, not other people's.
bornfreddy··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
Wow, that's genius. Basically, user gets a VPN but so does provider, in a sense.
bornfreddy··on Feeling Sad about AI
The agents also overload you with walls of text, always including lots of less relevant information. It's like they want you to give up and let them drive.
bornfreddy··on Feeling Sad about AI
I already did, before AI:

bornfreddy··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
Well, it's not actually a trap, since it's not the management who pays the price - it is investors, employees and the society at large that do, while the MBAs have already moved on to their next victim.

Problem with incentives, I would say.

bornfreddy··on Babylonian Lamb Stew with Beets (1750–1730 BCE)
I think the taste of their beer would have been much different from what we drink today?
bornfreddy··on The car industry A/B tested selling a car with and without CarPlay
Were the two cars priced the same? Is public image of both brands the same? I'm not sure this was a good A/B test.
bornfreddy··on I Changed My License
At its core it's a question of control. If I use this library or app, will I be safe? Will I be able to repair it, use it in the future, pay someone to fix it? Will it still be developed in a few years?

FOSS is a great answer to the first few questions, but it fails at the last one. As a user, yes, I would prefer a cloud-protection license, if it means that software will still be developed in a few years time. It's not like I want to use this software to compete with the author, I'm happy not to be allowed to do that.

bornfreddy··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
They probably broke something on purpose so that they are not left out.
bornfreddy··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
Often for trivial things that LLM is proud that it has noticed but bear no load whatsoever.
bornfreddy··on AWS Acquires DuckLabs
And forced AWS to acquire them instead? Nice trick.
bornfreddy··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
There are other reasons for porting, like control over your own device.
bornfreddy··on The Amazon tax
Ouch. But at least there is OSMand.
bornfreddy··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
Exactly this. And now it is AI - I can't wait to see what they will be paying in a few years to those who will be able to clean up the LLM mess.
bornfreddy··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
This is probably at least partially true. And they know that if they get together with South America, they can easily replace FIFA with another governing structure.
bornfreddy··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
You know how it is: 10k here, 30k there... and there is a few M in a swiss bank account (or whatever the modern hiding place is).
bornfreddy··on DMARC has been public since 2012 but most company domains still don't enforce it
You misunderstood, it's 31.6% actually.
bornfreddy··on Decathlon Germany adds Wero payment option to decathlon.de website
> my newfangled debit card has a CVV code that changes every 10 minutes, ...

Wow, is it using e-paper? Cool!

> ..., I MUST open the bank app to get the CVV code.

Ah. Gotcha.

bornfreddy··on Decathlon Germany adds Wero payment option to decathlon.de website
Well no. We were just reminded (pretty directly and rudely, I might add) that USA is not always on our side. Nothing wrong with being independent and able to stand on our own feet. Which in turn will benefit USA too, assuming we stay allies.
bornfreddy··on Decathlon Germany adds Wero payment option to decathlon.de website
One step at a time. Until then, you can use Murena or GrapheneOS.
bornfreddy··on EU fines Google €890M for competition breaches over search and apps
Yes. And there were many other cases in between, I just lack incentive to dig them up. Feel free to do it yourself. The thing is - their behavior didn't change for better.
bornfreddy··on Cloudflare's new AI traffic options for customers
As someone who is regularly blocked by CF and G - no, they are not. Even worse, they should not be, because that would mean the complete end of privacy online (not that we are far from that). Anubis works because at scale it wastes bots' resources (time mainly).
