borlox··on Thomann takes legal action against Fender
German lawsuits are far less expensive than … what we learn from huge american lawsuits in tv. Unlikely that Thomann will make piles of money. It‘s more about the right to keep selling those guitars and quite some marketing impact.
borlox··on Ask HN: Distributed data centers in our basements
We’re currently planning on a datacenter to give its heat to the municipal district heating. That combines your idea to use the heat loss for heating the people’s living space with the needs of a data center like access control, redundancies, interconnections.
borlox··on Deutsche Telekom is throttling the internet
Do you know similarly large, democratic societies without contradictions?
borlox··on Luxury Yacht is a desktop app for managing Kubernetes clusters
"Hello, this is Steve from the compliance department. Did your team just use three man-monthes for erm... luxury yacht develompent?"
borlox··on My Home Fibre Network Disintegrated
Regarding the last few sentences about the speedtest, Fibre doesn’t degrade in a way that you get 30 to 40% line speed. DSL did that, fibre doesn’t.

Speedtests for 10G are complicated and will show low numbers because of all the different TCP parameters and schedulers. Sometimes because peering links of your ISP or the speedtest providers are saturated.

borlox··on List of domains censored by German ISPs
My ISP doesn't care either. Why would they.
borlox··on I didn't realize my LG TV was spying on me until I turned off Live Plus

borlox··on F-35 pilot held 50-minute airborne conference call with engineers before crash
That's been a single strike.

I wonder how good it would still be when the enemy had resources and time to adapt in an ongoing conflict. In russia's war with ukraine, we saw tactics and tools quickly evolving.

borlox··on F-35 pilot held 50-minute airborne conference call with engineers before crash
When you're chosing to egress because the plane stops to know where it is or where it isn't, would you want it to decide how fast to eject? Chances are that the ejection system won't get reliable data to decide on in these situations.
borlox··on Pope Francis has died
J D, what did you do!?
borlox··on Growing trade deficit is selling the nation out from under us (2003) [pdf]
So, you don't want to have "the world" own shares of american companies?

Okay, let europe just sell all their stocks and ETF. But also, let them build alternatives to all american products. Let them keep the money they are spending for their Windows and Office licenses, their Netflix and Disney plans. Let them no longer create ad revenues on youtube. Let them buy korean Samsung phones instead of american iPhones.

Would that be a good deal for the american people?

borlox··on Canon EF and RF Lenses – All Autofocus Motors
Exactly why I just bought a Nikon.
borlox··on Electrical circuits encased in fluid may reshape data-center design
I don‘t like how they mix up different ideas:

1) having liquid instead of air as the first heat transporting medium 2) having water evaporation chillers instead of air heat exchangers and maybe heat pumps to chill the (last) heat transportation medium.

borlox··on ShredOS – Secure disk erasure/wipe
Pretty cool UX, however it seems to follow the approach to overwrite data once or multiple times.

As far as legends on the high magic of contemporary flash memory goes, you would want to simply tell your SSD/NVMe to secure erase the drive instead of writing data yourself. ShredOS doesn‘t seem to implement this.

borlox··on Ask HN: What would you preserve if the internet were to go down tomorrow?
“old school” as in: two big cisco core routers with hand written config and no further documentation?
borlox··on [dead]
Yeah, still trying to figure where’s the problem for Stripe
borlox··on Documenting Dance: Keeping Score (2017)
That’s a bit more readable and reminds me of Aresti symbols as used in aerobatics https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aresti_Catalog
borlox··on Excess memes and 'reply all' emails are bad for climate, researcher warns
So, we got cryptocurrencies and LLMs training all day, but emails are the problem. Sure thing.
borlox··on More nuclear energy means less mining
We got quite some problems at the Asse, former salt mine. with water leaking in in unconsidered ways and amounts.
borlox··on More nuclear energy means less mining
Less mining on getting the uranium?

Or less mining on getting the uranium plus digging the nuclear waste into an intermediate storage, plus digging it from the indermediate storage that‘s been recently flooded, plus throwing it somewhere else, and so on, for the next 100k years?

borlox··on Pi Day
a) 3/14 = 0.21428571428 b) If I take reasonable date formats, it's date 2024-03-14 = 2007 today

But kudos for only taking the first three digits, 3.14, as approximation for pi, which is in nearly all cases enough. Some friends in automotive engineering even tried using pi = 3 and 2*pi = 7 for a while, and the results were good enough.

borlox··on Considerations for a long-running Raspberry Pi
Just read the data sheet of the Sandisk Max Endurance and, oh boy, what a fsck’ing marketing bs language.

They state the endurance on thousands of hours of FHD video, but what assumptions do they make in bitrate etc?

Can‘t they state total TB written or drive writes per day or something sensible?

borlox··on NetBox: a source of truth for everything on your network
Great tool, we‘re heavily relying on it for our network automation and have some custom plugins running.
borlox··on Pencil Talk
How can penciltalk be a blog about pencils? That really disrupted my perception of HN.

I expected penciltalk to be some framework or package management/deployment tool.

borlox··on The HP Printer USB Sticker Trick Also Works for Thermaltake PSUs
Sir, did you just call that PSU a CPU?
borlox··on OtterCast: FOSS Audio streaming device running Linux using Sochip S3 SiP
It turns your good old hifi system into smart speakers:

When listening to music on your phone, you can choose to listen via Ottercast. Then the music will come out of the hifi system connected to the ottercast.

It does this via Wifi and the protocols Airplay, Pulseaudio, Spotify Connect and Snapcast.

borlox··on The Lilium Jet
Look for „Disk Loading“ - in short, the more rotor surface you have for every kilogram of mass, the more efficient your vehicle will hover.

Turbo fan engines work more efficient, because with their huge fan diameter, they have lower disk loading than turbo jet engines without bypass.

Lilium has a very high disk loading, resulting in low efficiency, resulting in short possible hovering times.

borlox··on Ipcalc – Command line CIDR calculator with IPv6 support
lol, it shows address classes. If I was in kindergarten when classes became deprecated, I could be a grandfather by now.
borlox··on BGP Blockchain
They failed to publish that draft on 1st and only published it on 27th. This makes the obvious joke about blockchain being useful a bit obscure.
