borisk··on Why CPUs Aren't Getting Any Faster
"Cedar Mill" CPUs would go up to 8GHz:

borisk··on Why CPUs Aren't Getting Any Faster
IMHO the real reason is CPUs and manufacturing technologies have become extremely complex. So although there are known, simple ways to address the heat dissipation it takes a lot of time to implement them.
borisk··on Indian OS
Russian government had similar plans a few years ago:

borisk··on Verizon offers iPad/MiFi Bundle on October 28, 1GB/mo for $20 no contract
So she was expecting Verizon to take care of her interests. She bought the device for use in Canada and didn't even ask for the price.

borisk··on Verizon offers iPad/MiFi Bundle on October 28, 1GB/mo for $20 no contract
How? With a little bit of effort. Spend 5 min. reading online reviews of the service before singing. Check the roaming rates before going to Canada, it takes 1 min. to find and read http://b2b.vzw.com/international/naroaming.htm
borisk··on Verizon offers iPad/MiFi Bundle on October 28, 1GB/mo for $20 no contract
Verizon is often acting like an evil megacorp, but in this case I'd say it's all your wife fault. The roaming rates are in the contract. Canadian telecoms may be charging Verizon a lot to use their networks.
borisk··on Is life expectancy a flawed measure of health care quality?
>>People of Japanese descent: 84.5 years in the US, 82.6 years in Japan.

What if someone was to add something like "People of Japanese descent: $85 000 average family income in the US, $50 000 in Japan." (I've made up the numbers from personal experience) Obviously richer ppl live longer.

borisk··on How to Make $37,000 in a single day
With $100 you can hire a very good designer in China for a week ...
borisk··on How to Make $37,000 in a single day
Haha, pessimistic locking in a public web app.
borisk··on IBM to join OpenJDK
Hitting IBM with a patent lawsuit is like hitting Mike Tyson with a boxing glove.
borisk··on Isolator++ (Easy Unit Testing for C++) released
The .NET version of Isolator is nearly as expensive and sells very well. $1200 is equal to employing a C++ developer for 2 or 3 days in US/Western Europe.
borisk··on Google: What We're Driving At
Car industry haven't made enough progress in the last 100 years, but your 1% is way off. A modern car diesel engine (like the one in BMW 320d ED) can exceed 45% efficiency.
borisk··on Google: What We're Driving At
Not really. Computer cars will very likely be manufactured mainly by the existing auto giants. And those have billions of ad dollars, so the media will be very careful.
borisk··on Google: What We're Driving At
Easy, you apply a bit of game theory. A system similar to say a poker bot can make the high level decisions.
borisk··on Meebo has a postMessage replacement for IE7
Something like http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/architecture/bb735305.aspx ?
borisk··on Android is Google's Agent Smith
A few minutes if someone (who hasn't wasted his time on HN :D ) already compiled the latest version for your device. Otherwise one can spent months trying to get the poorly documented and sometimes incomplete code to work.
borisk··on The Real Problem with Waiting for Superman
They have wireless Internet ;-)
borisk··on Babbage's heart-warming message for the middle-aged
From what I've read it seems extremely likely that he did build (in secrecy) a working computer. One that was used by the British secret service to decrypt enemy communications.
borisk··on What Hollywood's Power Players Can Teach Entrepreneurs
The book "Hollywood Secrets of Project Management Success" shows how similar Hollywood and software business are. http://www.amazon.com/Hollywood-Management-PRO-best-Practice...
borisk··on 8-Button StarCraft lets the AI take care of the complexity
Just wanted to point out that it's pretty silly to say that infinite = bounded ;-)
borisk··on 8-Button StarCraft lets the AI take care of the complexity
>> There is a trade off between speed and economy when doing an early rush. The attacking player will always have less attacking units than the defensive player due to the travel distance between bases. (Assuming the defensive player is prepared for the rush)

The attacking AI can abuse it's much much higher APM to do a lot of damage with less units. Like killing workers with zealots, zerglings or vultures.

>>In addition, by the time any first tier attacking units reach you, it's always possible to have a defensive structure, which can deal fairly well with any sort of micromangement.

Defensive structures are 1. expensive and 2. can be bypassed. An AI can use the same resources, human spent on defense, to expand or tech, easily winning the game.

borisk··on Windows Signature Experience: it's just windows sans the crapware
Normally you'd just buy the PC at Microsoft Store. You probably don't have to to go back for reinstall, there will be a restore DVD or partition.
borisk··on 8-Button StarCraft lets the AI take care of the complexity
>>I would like to see someone program a computer who could beat the best starcraft player. I bet that would make the IBM Deep Blue seem like a joke.

Deep Blue is ancient, modern chess programs make it look like a joke ;-)

In SC a program can abuse early some insane micromanagement to win before any hard strategy/positional decisions have to be made.

borisk··on Windows Signature Experience: it's just windows sans the crapware
You can get a refund for an unused OEM licence.
borisk··on Thank you, Ubuntu
Something like 30% of the Web servers on the Internet run Windows. There are millions of ASP.NET developers worldwide and Windows is by far the most popular Web platform for internal business apps.
borisk··on Thank you, Ubuntu
Most ppl haven't touched Linux on their PC either ;-)

There is a 6 month trial of Windows Server http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/trial-softw...

Students can get a Windows Server licence for $19 http://blogs.msdn.com/b/gautam/archive/2010/02/18/msdnaa-sof...

borisk··on Thank you, Ubuntu
Both Windows and Mac OS X have server versions, that can easily be installed on desktops.
borisk··on Over 5L med travellers visit India
There were many medical apps developed back in the 80s, but ... doctors&co. don't wont to loose their lifestyle to some stupid computers.
borisk··on Over 5L med travellers visit India
Most patients are from US and West Europe.
borisk··on Tim Armstrong: We Got TechCrunch
It's a lot harder to get ads for an international media. I'd guess most of the ads on www.techcrunch.com are payed by US marketing budgets. The people who manage those only care about US viewers. So question N:1 is how many US viewers, without ad blockers the site has. N:2 - for how long is it gone keep them.

A regional Finnish newspaper is very likely to keep it's audience in one form or another for a long time. That audience has high purchase power and is less likely to go online and research cheaper alternatives to advertised products/services.
