boredprogrammer··on Ask HN: What API do you wish you had while building your product?
Not sure if it quite fits the bill, but if your end user video uploads are stored on S3 or similar then zencoder does most of what you are looking for.
boredprogrammer··on Building a NAS
I came across this product recently: https://www.crowdsupply.com/gnubee/personal-cloud-1 which is seeking crowd funding at the moment. Personally I think they've made a mistake by going for 2.5" storage first with 3.5" coming later. Anyway, it sounds like it might be of interest to you?

boredprogrammer··on We're Enabling Display Ads on Select Stack Exchange Sites
This particular setup can/will leak cookies set on foo.tld to ads.foo.tld which leads to security concerns - only in your specific example though. If you were to use www.foo.tld and ads.foo.tld then you're good to go. While it is possible to carefully setup cookies that do not leak, its something you need to be careful of when recommending. That said, I do agree with your premise and wish native ad hosting like this happened much more often.

Tech Crunch is a news source? When did that happen?
boredprogrammer··on I retired at 30. The best part isn't leisure – it's freedom.
For anyone familiar with the principles of personal finance and investing, my trick was unimpressive and easily reproducible: Just spend much less than you earn and pour the difference into efficient index funds.

This is the usual US centric nonsense where a certain privileged few can use their privilege to get out of the rat race, whereas the vast majority of the planet can't even get into that race in the first place, never mind hack it for these sort of benefits. I'm rather sick of the bullshit claims that there is no magic and that anybody else can do this too - this is patently untrue. You are ultra privileged; you lucked out in the ethnic and circumstances lottery. By all means share how you did it, but please stop intimating thats its at all possible for the vast majority of the rest of us to do this.

boredprogrammer··on Ask HN: From zero to IT career, what is the fastest path?
Could you elaborate on the "network by default" point? I've been programming for 18 years and my professional network is pathetic. Any problems I have I research online - my network is google search. Unfortunately decent jobs are much harder find through google search.
boredprogrammer··on Poll: How long could you survive without income?
Is there any other (realistic) way of doing it though?

EDIT: I added realistic, as not just anybody can get venture capital or have rich friends/family willing to invest a little.

boredprogrammer··on Song of the Introvert
i just like quiet and solitude. people are so noisy and they are always talking and asking so many questions. and some of them despise quiet so much that they will fill any silent patches with artificial noise - radios or talking to themselves or humming, or tapping or whatever. and i am fine with this except when they feel that they must force their noise onto everybody else which they so often do.

boredprogrammer··on Bootstrap Wishlist
"If you're using a bootstrap as your front-end framework, then why the <select> element isn't customized in my <form> just as the standard bootstrap dropdowns !?!"

You're not using a <select> element in your example so I'm not sure how this is a solution? If I went to a doctor complaining of sore fingers, I would not be impressed if his recommended solution was to say "ah, but you have perfectly working toes, just use them instead!"

boredprogrammer··on Show HN: Keep, an app that helps you love how you spend every dollar
The main sentiment behind MMM has always seemed to be "get a really high paying job and work your ass off for a few years". It doesn't really work if you are stuck in an average wage, with few prospects and no jobs to apply for.
boredprogrammer··on The new bower.io
Possibly a stupid question, but ... Can anybody explain to me the use case for Bower/Yeoman?

Whenever I am adding javascript to a website I just use a cdn such as http://cdnjs.com/

Why would I use Bower instead of this? Is it more of a node.js thing? Or is it something to do with hosting your own copies of the libraries instead of a CDN (I thought this was frowned upon)

boredprogrammer··on Untag Yourself - You're not what others say you are
Meh. Posting because this type of story irks me every time.

I know I am a decent programmer. I also know I am not a good sales person (why? because I'm not good with people, or lying, or gambling - in fact I'm not allowed to talk to new leads at work until they are confirmed as clients and fully on board with a project). Therefore I need to stick with programming. However my current job has me stuck doing mundane repetitive programming. I've been looking for quite some time, but there are no job prospects in my field in my locality.

So the only realistic solution to being the best I can would be to go out on my own and start my own company - but I am not a good sales person, and chances are high that I would fail and be unemployed and broke. I can't move to a different location (I'm 2 years into a mortgage which has terms saying I cannot sell the house for 5 years), but even if I did Ireland as a whole is in a huge recession with huge unemployment and very few prospects. Moving abroad is expensive and has too many unknowns.

So I guess I'm left with post negative comments to random people on the internet.

You can't just say "be the person you want to be", and snap your fingers and make it happen. You can't blame your limits on other people and what they have said to you in the past. You have to work with facts as they are presented to you, and the fact is everyones circumstances are different and not everyones situation can be improved by reading silly feel good stories.

boredprogrammer··on I quit my job
I have approx 6 months salary saved. I used to have more, but some home emergencies meant I had to eat into some of my savings recently. The government here decided that pursuing austerity for years without end was the way forward, and began implementing all sorts of new taxes, so I get paid the same as I did 4 years ago, but bring home approx 20% less. Same government policy has forced countless local businesses to shut down, meaning that there are very few job openings (programming or otherwise) available for the last couple of years. So I could quit now, manage approx 6 months payments and then stand a very good chance of still having no job. That or stay where I am and post about how my life sucks on HN.
boredprogrammer··on I quit my job
The potential gap in my mortgage payments is what keep me working in a job I hate.
boredprogrammer··on I quit my job
I've been in a similar position for the last 3 years (of a 9 year stint at current company), and your story does resonate with me. I am bored at what I do all day long and have lost the passion for doing any sort of programming in my free time. I've considered leaving a few times, but I always take a look at what sort of openings are out there before I hand in my notice, and the answer is: "there are none".

There has been one programming position advertised in the city I live in in the last 3 years. That company has since closed - as I suspected it would (the entire team of 10 was Polish guys and gals and as it turns out they just wanted a presence in the country and farm out all the work back to Poland). Programmers in the US are totally spoiled right now, as there is a huge demand for them, but its not the same elsewhere. A number of other software businesses have also shut down or retreated back to their base.

Life may be too short to be bored, but its also too short to become penniless and homeless in a few months after quitting because you couldn't hack it anymore in a dead end job.
