boredemployee··on GNOME and Red Hat Linux eleven years ago (2009)
There was a game from that Red Hat era that I loved so much, I *think* it was in Red Hat in that same period. It was a really simple adventure game in 2d, you could play in a window after typing/entering startx. But can't remember the name, I was 12 and it seems today like I dreamt about the game lol.

Would appreciate if anyone remembers it!

boredemployee··on Japan Post launches 'digital address' system
I think as with everything digital, you need to keep your information updated
boredemployee··on The Level Design Book
I think the confusion is here:

"...we (humans) could describe ..."

boredemployee··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
Care to explain more? how is it going? how many paying customers? how did u get the first 100 users or how are u going to achieve it?
boredemployee··on Show HN: Vom Decision Platform (Cursor for Decision Analyst)
> "We're sorry, the AI says you're not allowed to have credit anymore."

genuine question: hasn't that been done already with machine learning?

edit: your point is totally valid and I agree, but this type of cruelty is not new

boredemployee··on The Friendship Recession: The lost art of connecting
and its usually not enough lately... I see myself working all the time or thinking about jobs to be done.
boredemployee··on I won't be vibe coding anymore: a noob's perspective
As I’ve been saying, many companies already expect you to use an LLM to speed up coding. Tasks now can be shipped in hours, not days or weeks.
boredemployee··on Coding as Craft: Going Back to the Old Gym
In other words, for the vast majority of people: work (code) or starve to death.
boredemployee··on Coding as Craft: Going Back to the Old Gym
"It’s about maintaining the human element in a craft that’s increasingly automated."

I mean, what can anyone do, anyway? We’ve been on a "quest" toward the total automation of work for decades! and unfortunately these reflections are coming far too late.

didn’t anyone notice what was happening all these years?

Talking with a musician friend, he pointed out that today, studying, producing, and releasing music is almost volunteer work because the vast majority of artists will likely see no return on their investment, especially with AI flooding the music platforms, so I really expect it to happen to many other jobs.

boredemployee··on Lotka–Volterra Equations
Volterra also contributed to materials science, more precisely with dislocations in crystals. Always amaze me how people in the past could make huge impact in totally different fields.
boredemployee··on Isaac Asimov describes how AI will liberate humans and their creativity (1992)
honestly wondering, how do u know it was AI generated?
boredemployee··on How University Students Use Claude
I think I understand what you're trying to say.

We certainly improve productivity, but that is not necessarily good for humanity. Could be even worse.

i.e.: my company already expect less time for some tasks given that they _know_ I'll probably use some AI to do tasks. Which means I can humanly handle more context in a given week if the metric is "labour", but you end up with your brain completely melted.

boredemployee··on Show HN: Generate Anki Decks from YouTube Videos to Anki Converter
I built few months ago a toy project using youtube-transcript-api, but the problem is youtube block IPs after a few downloads.

All the big cloud providers are blocked by default, maybe the trick is doing proxies but then it start to get expensive.

If you have any idea of how to get away with it pls lemme know.

boredemployee··on Show HN: Transform your codebase into a single Markdown doc for feeding into AI
not sure if it's cursor's fault, but very often it doesn't give me the real or complete code of my codebase when auto editing/auto completing.

any tips?

boredemployee··on The hallucinatory thoughts of the dying mind
Had a really similar experience with my dad, the only difference was that he was calling for his mom (that passed away many many years before) in the language of the country he was born. It was a really touching thing that I'll never forget.
boredemployee··on Ask HN: For those who have stopped taking SSRIs, what tips do you have?
really sorry to hear my friend, wishing you all the best!
boredemployee··on Ask HN: For those who have stopped taking SSRIs, what tips do you have?
Cool thanks for sharing your experience!

Are u taking any meds right now?

boredemployee··on Ask HN: For those who have stopped taking SSRIs, what tips do you have?
never heard of that term before, thanks!
boredemployee··on Ask HN: For those who have stopped taking SSRIs, what tips do you have?
>> Everyone reacts differently to psychiatric medication

That's exactly why I asked it here, wanted to know in average how ppl felt and how they dealt with it

>> There's a reason there are so many medications rather than one magic pill.

I know right?

>> but medical advice this is not the place for.

I already saw ppl talking about these kind of drugs here, I already saw doctors here as well, psychiatrists, etc. can't understand the censorship with the subject

boredemployee··on Ask HN: For those who have stopped taking SSRIs, what tips do you have?
I'm going to, I just wanted to know how did it worked out to other ppl
boredemployee··on Spotify Shuts Down ‘Unwrapped’ Artist Royalty Calculator with Legal Threats
>> Why?

because the streaming business model and the convenience of having any song from any artist in the palm of your hand has canabalized any and all other possibilities for musicians that would otherwise pay better. you have a few people/fans that insist on paying for the music in platforms like bandcamp, but thats uncommon. from the user's point of view, it's the perfect world, where he pays a little to have access to the entire musical catalog on the planet.

boredemployee··on Spotify Shuts Down ‘Unwrapped’ Artist Royalty Calculator with Legal Threats
in a serious society, Spotify (and related business models) would never exist. the profession of music producer is almost a voluntary job with negative ROI
boredemployee··on Show HN: A simple web game to help learn chords and basic progressions

boredemployee··on When muscles work out, they help neurons to grow, a new study shows
if you can, start right away. i've always been known among my friends as the most sedentary, lazy, and effort-averse person in the world. but five months ago, that changed, and I regret not starting sooner. it seems like you develop a self-challenge component that you'll only understand once you start
boredemployee··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
damn I wish u did it 10 years ago! I really struggled with it, was so hard to find coloring images for my daughter. now shes 14 so I don't think she will care much :)
boredemployee··on Show HN: A VSCode Extension to edit HTML visually in real-time
thats exactly what I thought, I'm old enough to even remember Netscape Composer. I was 10 y/o when used it lol
boredemployee··on AI is an impediment to learning web development
Well, I must admit, LLMs made me lose the joy of learning programming and made me realize I like to solve problems.

There was a time I really liked to go through books, documentation, learn and run the codes etc. but these days are gone for me. I prefer to enjoy free time and go to the gym now

boredemployee··on A Word, Please: Coffee-shop prompt stirs ChatGPT to brew up bland copy
Man, exactly that. I use GPT a lot and I know what to expect in most cases, it won't solve all your problems, it probably will solve a few and not in the first iteration.
boredemployee··on Fine-tuning now available for GPT-4o
perhaps my ignorance and my beginner level on the topic are biasing me, but in my experience, fine-tuning the GPT-3.5 turbo has elevated our operation to another level. When we put it into production, it became much faster, more accurate, and cheaper when compared to original gpt4. Our use case is to make unstructured data return a JSON with some key-value entities where the order matters.
