boopmaster··on Living sound forever: The genius of Wendy Carlos
"Beauty in the Beast" album on streaming services or re-issues would be wonderful.

The title track is, to me, absolutely epic and transports my mind to a parallel dream dimension. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2j1gy2

boopmaster··on Senate Bill to Ban TikTok
I’m not sure which part of our national security surveillance state apparatus is endangered by foreign ownership, but I assume at face value that there is some very embarrassing facts that our local spooks are not keen to share with China. What does the great firewall of America look like, from the infrastructure & interface angle? Would we want to share that with China? Your Google searches and all your metadata that can likely be accessed with relative ease… is there a similar surveillance capability that we’d wish to share with China in how spooks make data requests?

China has no jurisdiction over you… there’s no real punishing to relate to what you have viewed on TikTok, so why are your viewing habits a threat to national security?

I don’t believe this to be a zero sum game. This is further extension of authoritarianism from a government that is terrified of anything short of pervasive colonoscopy-tier data collection.

boopmaster··on Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought
Are we losing the point, here? “Does not browse” When interacting with webmail- also does not browse directly, preferring CLI scripts to act as intermediary. Does wget execute .js or .css or execute anything it reads beyond a URL redirect? Is wget a huge attack surface like a browser?
boopmaster··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
This. Low confidence still significant in that it could have been “low confidence transmission from wet market game”, but that’s not the direction this landed on. It’s likely a lab leak, says the report, but there’s too many gaps to support higher certainty.
boopmaster··on Sloth – A Mac app that shows all open files, directories, sockets, etc.
Love this, reminds me of the BeOS process controller that permitted killing individual threads IIRC. useful when you need to unfreeze an app without losing your work in that app!

boopmaster··on Unbundling Tools for Thought
As limited as OneNote is, I find it the place I keep returning to. Obsidian was extremely off-putting to me when I last tried it out, as the node parents themselves could not be documents. Or I couldn't figure out how to use them that way! Maybe it's just me!

Beyond that, I have a fondness for wikis that permit breadcrumbs from excerpts back to a main documents. Giving the right information in the right place, with a centralized main resource that is carved up. This strategy is super useful to prevent dead instruction sprawl.

I once read (in someone else's wiki) that all documentation is a memorial to some time in the past. That really stuck with me for years now. When you hit "save" it's already in a state of decay.

I am talking about sharing of information and maintenance of knowledge stores though, and that perhaps is a different beast than cataloging ones own interests.

boopmaster··on The great Covid and smoking cover-up?
afterthought: Author can go ahead and add this thread to list of supporting docs. :-P we're doing all the work fighting over study itself that we'll bury any idea of censored speech.
boopmaster··on The great Covid and smoking cover-up?
The author's framing of the issue as speech suppression is, in my eyes, far more interesting than the study and backing evidence, and certainly more interesting than contra-claims about acquiring COVID here in this thread.

Yet here we are barking at the moon about vitamin D and playing jump to conclusions by forcibly cramming words into the post re: taking up smoking.

The point isn't to start smoking because this post isn't directly about COVID, the point is that inconvenient yet possible truths can be crushed by our digital overlords.

boopmaster··on Social isolation and the brain in the pandemic era
Agreed. Over a million dead and zero processing time to grieve, and morgues overflowing such that temporary freezers are used to store the dead.

[sarc] Not sure what about that could cause anxiety or depression in anyone, they just needed to hang out more. [/sarc]

boopmaster··on macOS keeps a huge wallpapers cache
I second Daisy Disk. When I made the leap from Windows to mac in the early 00s I wanted something to replace the freeware “scanner” I had found so entirely useful.

boopmaster··on U.S. appeals court rejects big tech’s right to regulate online speech
This wouldn’t be my first choice of examples. Unmoderated swatting forums (as I understand that it was) goes beyond free speech. The first amendment does not protect death threats.
boopmaster··on Obesity Is Now the Top Modifiable Dementia Risk Factor in the US
It’s complicated! Ha. Yeah I mean there’s no value in harassing an individual at all about their fat pride, when they are not responsible for but most likely victims of society… a society that positions cheap and unhealthy food options at every corner.

Be mad at McDonald’s. Be mad at Family Dollar. Be mad at bullies. And be made about fat pride too, that we as people have created the conditions that have been so toxic to some people that almost by necessity they inoculate themselves from horrible attitudes that have never helped them in the slightest.

boopmaster··on Obesity Is Now the Top Modifiable Dementia Risk Factor in the US
Correct, there's that line where the body shaming and bullying are more likely to make the fatties go back inside, not get in the pool, and skip participation. That was me in school. I would not have had such issues with weight had it not been repeatedly and antagonistically drawn to attention, and used as an excuse to exclude or diminish my personhood.
boopmaster··on My favorite iPhone feature was removed, long live its subpar replacement
I sometimes try to use this feature on newer "long press" models. Like trying to "push/pop" an image out larger because it is so tiny in the screen... and nothing happens... I'm just mashing real hard on the screen.
boopmaster··on My favorite iPhone feature was removed, long live its subpar replacement
but what you are describing here exists on newer models as well, sans force touch.. long press.
boopmaster··on Productivity porn
The recent episode _What we do in the Shadows_ : “Go Flip Yourself” has the gang watching a version of property brothers while their house is falling apart around them. I thought it was part of the subtext, at least… unproductive watching others do what you need to do.

I’ve experienced this firsthand when asking my partner if maybe we can think about picking up… so yeah, the TV remote was picked up so Marie Condo [sp?] videos could light up the TV… and instead of just picking up, it’s a watch party of someone else picking up :(

I hate productivity-tube for this!

/end rant

boopmaster··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
NGL: Sometimes I do worry about the overall health of the Mozilla foundation, but moreso that if Firefox gets too far behind - we may lose out on having an open web.

Maybe HN can help save it, therefore the web, and therefore the future for our children's children? :-P

This headline article is a good first step ;)

boopmaster··on Sound of Colleagues
I appreciate the toggle on volume, but it desperately needs some kind of random silence insertion threshold as well, to space out the distance more randomly. Like what if I don't mind hearing a telephone, but it doesn't need to be every 30 seconds? I like this project, dont' get me wrong. I just think each of these components also needs a way to space out the time between cars driving by etc., while presently there is only a volume slider.
boopmaster··on Air France announces end to research monkey transport
Exactly correct. Nobody can have any differing ideals of morality than that. Those ideals are the |abs| correct values and exact center of the universe, and anything divergent must be castigated. There is no gray area. There is no pragmatism.
boopmaster··on 4th Gen KDE Slimbook – Linux Ultrabook with an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U

Good callout. The about page says they are based in Spain + the prices are in Euros.

boopmaster··on The web is not poor man’s native (2015)
The web experience on mobile is bad, largely because reddit makes it bad. The overlays and prompts to push web visitors over to mobile/native is in itself atrocious, hostile design.
boopmaster··on Amazon bows to UAE pressure to restrict LGBT search results
Let me google that for you. Wait, some search results were removed due to DMCA claims. All the stones I had to throw at this are apparently censored here in the good ole USA.
boopmaster··on Playstation confirms chain of 5 vulnerabilities on PS4/PS5
In this case, "Crime Pays Much Better" is a valid criticism, relative to the award. It really shouldn't be the case here. This is very much a "worst case scenario" for Sony if publicly released. The award amount IMHO is excessively paltry for the level of effort and the relative impact that this could have caused their business if not reported in an ethical way. An award amount this low, is as other points out and the poster, approaches levels of "deterrent to doing the right thing."
boopmaster··on Show HN: Recut automatically removes silence from videos – built with Tauri
I don't know why the first thing I thought of is remake version of "Shunsuke Kida's - Maiden in Black", from the Demon Souls OST, having all the silence and therefore tension and negative space taken away from it. I know, that's different than youtuber videos; but that's where my headspace went.
boopmaster··on Tell HN: Banned from LinkedIn for Reporting Wickr Drug Spam
yeah that one person who uses that one thing that you don’t support, prudent to call them out for not personally fixing the world. You have made a big, big difference today bud.
boopmaster··on Meta Scrutinizing Sheryl Sandberg’s Use of Facebook Resources over Several Years
Political hit piece stinks like Facebook butthurt.

What an embarrassing company.

If they behave this way towards execs, how do they treat the little guys?

Would not wish to work for Meta.

Good on her for leaving.

boopmaster··on How head posture affects perceived cooperativeness: A cross-cultural perspective
my take on the first panel of images does give off different qualities

* Condescending * Neutral/Trustworthy * Scheming!

I am a taller person at around ~ 1.95m, so that may influence my own biases.

boopmaster··on Quitting Twitter? What People Say About Life After Social Media
I periodically experience a feeling of profound loss of close contacts even years after deleting all my Meta accounts.

I’m not going back there, as I certainly don’t see it as the future of the web and not worth investing energy into.

I just wish some ppl could figure out how to send text messages again.

Just adding this as a counterpoint, that it can be uncomfortable for longer than a week as it says in the article.

I’ve likely missed out on loads of invites.

boopmaster··on Bots behind the game console shortage
PS5 market is definitely bonkers. After sitting through some of the crazy queues on the playstation site and giving up on direct to consumer I did manage to score one, but it was tedious for a few days getting hammered by every twitter notification from a few of those accounts that watch and post when stock becomes available. When I did land a unit, it wasn't without a price shock of its own as GameStop was selling as bundles. So, yeah I ended up with maybe a couple of games that I would rather not have bought up front and they were pretty close to full retail price.

This was all very, very frustrating. Sony knows I have years of history with them going back to PS3 era. They could throw me a freakin' bone and let me reserve a spot in a queue, even if it was in agreement with a 3rd party retailer - I'd be cool with that. They could manage this situation so much better.

// Not to mention that once I got my unit, the storage evaporated almost immediately. PS5s hold about 5 or 6 "large games" at a time!

boopmaster··on [dead]
I strongly believe in the right to bear arms with specifications no better than what was available in 1791.
